Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old New England Houses New England colonists were not of a class content to live in so rude a manner. Lumber, both hand sawed and mill-sawed, was produced soon after their arrival. The earliest mill of which I find record was erected in the vicinity of Portsmouth in 1631 by a man named Gibbons. But the output of the little mills of the early days was limited in quan tity, and a number of generations passed before the log hut disappeared. As the pioneers pushed their way, year after year, into the interior, northward and westward, they built in western Massachusetts, in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, log cabins such as were built in an earlier day in the coast settlements and along the valleys of the larger rivers. For them, as for the first settlers, shelter was a re quirement second only to food, and the readiest means of meeting the necessity was the cutting, hewing, and piling of logs from the surrounding forest. Even after the operation of sawmills, much of the heavier framing timber was hewn from logs. This is often revealed when the old houses are torn down or altered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Brick Houses of New England On the other hand, the American architects and builders of the period, when they encountered unfamiliar problems, were able to solve them with great ingenuity. The abundance of wood and its ease of working produced a remarkable growth of wooden houses entirely different from any European type. But besides these wooden houses, brick houses were also built, though they were always less numerous, because of their greater cost. The oldest examples were built with bricks imported from England and Holland, but at a rather early period a flourishing brick-making industry grew up, particularly in the neighborhood of the larger cities. In general it may be stated that the brick houses in America follow European tradition more closely than those of wood due to the importation of much of their material, the fact that they were built in many cases by European workmen, and their location in centers of trade, usually in or near seaports where contact with Europe was more general and intimate. Salem, Newbury port, and Portsmouth, all flourishing ports in the days of the clipper ships, Show many houses of this type, while in such centers as Boston and New York they were formerly very numerous, but have largely been demolished to make way for later types of building. Of the houses here illustrated, two belong to the earlier or Jacobean type, while the others follow more or less closely Georgian models. The Cradock house at Medford, known also as the Peter Tufts house, is probably the oldest brick house standing in New England, although its traditional date, 1634, is certainly erroneous. It is definitely known that Matthew Cradock, first Gover nor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, had established a farm at Medford before this date, although he himself never visited it. But the contemporary maps, while they show a group of buildings at Medford, Show nothing on the site of the particular house in question. It seems certain, therefore, that the Cradock house was really of later date than that of tradition, and it may be stated with reasonable probability that it was built nearly half a century later. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Towns of New England I had planned in the months that followed to publish a souvenir volume containing the more important addresses made by distinguished men on the historic significance of the places visited; but as the happy experience receded into the past a larger thought laid hold of me. Why not sometime in the infrequent leisure of a busy minister's life edit a series of volumes on American Historic T owns 9 Kingsley's novels were written amid parish duties, and Dr. Mccook has found time, amid exacting ministerial duties, to make perhaps the most searching study ever made by an American of the habits of spiders. Medical experts agree concerning the value of a wholesome avoca tion to the man who takes his vocation seri ously; and congregations are quick to give ear to the earnest preacher whose sermons be tray a large outlook on life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homes of Our Forefathers: Being a Selection of the Oldest and Most Interesting Historical Houses and Noted Places in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont; From Original Drawings Taken on the Spot All' who are interested in this collection of the ancestral homes of New England will, I trust, read the following: After innumerable trials and difficulties, the full history of which would fill fifty of these pages, I have at length completed the third volume of Homes of Our Forefathers. Nearly Seven years have passed away since I commenced the work. Very few persons can have any adequate idea of the time, labor and expense required to collect the materials and superintend the getting up of these books. The many weary miles I have travelled to ascertain the correct dates or the names of those who built these houses; hunting up old wills in the Probate Court; examining old deeds in the Registrar's Office; visit ing graveyards, to decipher, if possible, the date of some person's death; calling on Mr. A, B, and C, and trying to reconcile the different and often contradictory st0ries they would tell me, etc., etc., are a few of the labors incident to this undertaking. That in spite of all my efforts to be absolutely correct, there may be found some trifling errors; that some of the drawings may be slightly inaccurate in unimportant details, I am quite willing to admit, but this will surely be pardoned, for, perhaps when I was making the sketches, rain or snow was falling on my paper, or the wind was blowing a gale, and making it extremely difficult to sketch at all. And this reminds me of a question I have often been asked, and that is, why I did not take photographs of these houses. I answer that very seldom would this process have been desirable, because in very many cases, alterations and additions have been made at various times to these buildings, which I have left out, and shown them as they were originally. Then again, frequently trees hid important features of course in sketching I could leave these trees out partially or wholly. I will now say a few words in regard to the financial part of this undertaking. From first to last I have been obliged to bear the whole expense, as I could not induce any society or individual to invest money in the enterprise. That this has been a pretty heavy burden will be evident from the following statement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Colonial Homes One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types Of the colonial architecture of New England as pos sible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appleton'sjoumml; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of our colonial homes.
