Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Handbook of the Northern Tour: Lakes George and Champlain; Niagara; Montreal; Quebec They ascended the St. Lawrence and entered the Richelieu, which forms the outlet of Lake Champlain. Here, to Champlain's great disappointment, he found his farther progress barred by the rapids at Chambly, though the Indians had assured him that his boat could pass all the way unobstructed. He told them that though they had deceived him, he would not abandon them, sent Marais with the boat and most of the men back to Quebec, and, with two who offered to follow him, prepared to go on in the Indian canoes. Book excerpt: Francis Parkman, Jr. (September 16, 1823 - November 8, 1893) was an American historian, best known as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life and his monumental seven-volume France and England in North America. These works are still valued as historical sources and as literature. He was also a leading horticulturist, briefly a professor of Horticulture at Harvard University and author of several books on the topic. Parkman was a trustee of the Boston Athenum from 1858 until his death in 1893 Parkman was born in Boston, Massachusetts to the Reverend Francis Parkman Sr. (1788-1853), a member of a distinguished Boston family, and Caroline (Hall) Parkman. The senior Parkman was minister of the Unitarian New North Church in Boston from 1813 to 1849. As a young boy, "Frank" Parkman was found to be of poor health, and was sent to live with his maternal grandfather, who owned a 3,000-acre (12 km) tract of wilderness in nearby Medford, Massachusetts, in the hopes that a more rustic lifestyle would make him more sturdy. In the four years he stayed there, Parkman developed his love of the forests, which would animate his historical research. Indeed, he would later summarize his books as "the history of the American forest." He learned how to sleep and hunt, and could survive in the wilderness like a true pioneer. He later even learned to ride bareback, a skill that would come in handy when he found himself living with the Sioux

Book excerpt: This book is a group of narratives of the most striking events of our colonial history connected with the principal points of interest to the tourist visiting Canada and the northern borders of the United States. The narratives are drawn, with the addition of explanatory passages, from "The Conspiracy of Pontiac," "Pioneers of France in the New World," "The Jesuits in North America," "Count Frontenac," and "Montcalm and Wolfe." -Boston, 1 April, 1885 "A valuable pocket companion for travelers in the region of Lakes George and Champlain, Niagara, Montreal, and Quebec. The substance of its pages is drawn chiefly from the standard historical works of the author, and repeats the history of the principal events connected with the points enumerated." -The Dial "Narratives of the most striking events in colonial history connected with the principal points of interest to the tourist." -Sargent's Readings for the Young "If people only knew how far superior in real interest as well as in intellectual influence Parkman's narratives are to the sensational novel, they would lay the sensational novel aside." -Goldwin Smith "Summer tourists to lakes George and Champlain, Niagara, Montreal and Quebec, have a delightful handbook provided them in the paper-covered volume containing selections from Mr. Parkman's historical narratives relating to these places. The passages here grouped together are among those strikingly graphic and interesting descriptions that have given such charm to 'The Conspiracy of Pontiac,' 'Pioneers of France in the New World,' 'The Jesuits in North America,' 'Count Frontenac,' and 'Montcalm and Wolfe.'" -Boston Advertiser "A most interesting guidebook to that region." -Publishers Weekly CONTENTS. Book excerpt: “The Old World, the New World, and the Creation of the Modern World, 1400–1650: An Interpretive History” provides a unique look at the early years of European discovery and colonization, examining the impact of this period on the historical development of both the New and Old Worlds. The text is enhanced by the incorporation of a wide variety of original source material, allowing readers to benefit from a more first-hand experience of the historical events of the period. Providing the essential facts in conjunction with expert analysis, the volume poses a number of important questions to enable readers to construct their own analysis of the evidence presented. Uniquely, the volume goes beyond the standard textbook formula of “what, when and where” to delve more deeply into the specific (as well as the wider) significance of historical developments, thereby providing the platform for a textured, interpretive understanding of the history of the Atlantic world.
