El ¡9 de diciembre, a las diez i media de la mañana, se presentó en el monasterio de las monjas clarisas el oidor doctor don Pedro de Hazaña Solis de Pa checo, seguido de toda la comunidad de frailes franciscanos i de las tres compañias de milicianos de Santiago que rodearon el convento. Convocadas las monjas a una sala por un toque de campana, oyeron la lectura de la provision del arzobispo de Lima; pero con una enerjla que parece inconcebible, manifestaron que no podian obedecerla mientras no se resolviese la apelacion que habian entablado. Conmina das, sin embargo, por el oidor Hazaïia, i a la vista de los frailes franciscanos i de todo aquel aparato de fuerza armada, las monjas quisieron huir a la calle, para asi larse en el monasterio de agustinas; pero intervinieron la tropa i las otras personas que habian ido con el oidor, uofendiéndolas con las armas, dice el cabildo, i a empe llones, arrastrándolas por el suelo, i poniéndoles las manos en los rostros, arrastran dolas de los cabellos, i siguie'ndolas con otras demostraciones i agravios. N Fácil es imajinarse el alboroto i la cxcitacion que debieron producirse en la ciudad. Acudieron al convento la audiencia i el cabildo, se agolpó el pueblo, i poniéndose éste de parte de las monjas, la tropa recurrió a sus armas e hizo fuego, pero sin causar desgracias. Al fin, despues de numerosos desórdenes, que debieron ser el escándalo i el dolor del vecindario de Santiago, las monjas clarisas fueron asiladas en el monasterio de agustinas. La ajitacion duró muchos días. Levantáronse procesos e informaciones en que el oidor Hazaña pretendía probar que el cabildo habia estimulado la desobe diencia de las monjas, i el cabildo se empeñaba en justificarse. La autoridad ecle siástica lanzó escomunion mayor contra los que habian puesto mano sobre las mon jas, por ser éstas, decia, personas eclesiásticas. Por fin, llevado el negocio a Roma, la curia pontificía lo resolvió en 1661, declarando que el monasterio de Santa Cla ra de Santiago de Chile estaba sujeto a la autoridad del ordinario eclesiástico.
