Book Synopsis Stars and Stardom in Brazilian Cinema by : Tim Bergfelder
Download or read book Stars and Stardom in Brazilian Cinema written by Tim Bergfelder and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent explosion of scholarly interest in “star studies,” Brazilian film has received comparatively little attention. As this volume demonstrates, however, the richness of Brazilian stardom extends well beyond the ubiquitous Carmen Miranda. Among the studies assembled here are fascinating explorations of figures such as Eliane Lage (the star attraction of São Paulo’s Vera Cruz studios), cult horror movie auteur Coffin Joe, and Lázaro Ramos, the most visible Afro-Brazilian actor today. At the same time, contributors interrogate the inner workings of the star system in Brazil, from the pioneering efforts of silent-era actresses to the recent advent of the non-professional movie star.
Book Synopsis Brazilian National Cinema by : Lisa Shaw
Download or read book Brazilian National Cinema written by Lisa Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazilian cinema is one of the most influential national cinemas in Latin America and this wide-ranging study traces the evolution of Brazilian film from the silent era to the present day, including detailed studies of more recent international box-office hits, such as Central Station (1998) and City of God (2002). Brazilian National Cinema gives due importance to traditionally overlooked aspects of Brazilian cinema, such as popular genres, ranging from musical comedies (the chanchada) to soft-core porn films (the pornochanchada) and horror films, and also provides a fresh approach to the internationally acclaimed avant-garde Cinema Novo of the 1960s. Lisa Shaw and Stephanie Dennison apply recent theories on stardom, particularly relating to issues of ethnicity, race and gender, to both well-known Brazilian performers, such as Carmen Miranda and Sonia Braga, and lesser known domestic icons, such as the Afro-Brazilian comic actor, Grande Otelo (Big Othello), and the uberblonde children’s TV and film star, and media mogul, Xuxa. This timely addition to the National Cinemas series provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Brazilian cinema and issues of national and cultural identity.
Book Synopsis Cinema e História do Brasil by : Jean-Claude Bernardet
Download or read book Cinema e História do Brasil written by Jean-Claude Bernardet and published by Edições Verona. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Otherness and the Media written by Hamid Naficy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology on otherness and the media, first published in 1993, was prompted by the proliferation of writings centring on issues of ‘difference’, ‘diversity’, ‘multiculturalism’, ‘representation’ and ‘postcolonial’ discourses. Such issues and discourses question existing canons of criticism, theory and cultural practice but also because they suggest a new sense of direction in theorisation of difference and representation.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Latin American Cinema by : Marvin D'Lugo
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Latin American Cinema written by Marvin D'Lugo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Latin American Cinema is the most comprehensive survey of Latin American cinemas available in a single volume. While highlighting state-of-the-field research, essays also offer readers a cohesive overview of multiple facets of filmmaking in the region, from the production system and aesthetic tendencies, to the nature of circulation and reception. The volume recognizes the recent "new cinemas" in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, and, at the same time, provides a much deeper understanding of the contemporary moment by commenting on the aesthetic trends and industrial structures in earlier periods. The collection features essays by established scholars as well as up-and-coming investigators in ways that depart from existing scholarship and suggest new directions for the field.
Download or read book Mexican Cinema written by Carl J. Mora and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's main reason for writing this book, however, is simply to provide an introduction to the Mexican commercial cinema for American and other English-speaking readers. Although the United States has been, and continues to be, a major foreign market for Mexican movies, the overwhelming majority of Americans are unaware of them. Mexican films are restricted to the Hispanic theater circuits and shown without English subtitles; therefore anyone wishing to see a Mexican movie would have to be fairly fluent in Spanish. Such a requisite effectively eliminates almost the entire general audience in the United States from exposure to Mexican cinema.

Book Synopsis Brazilian Cinema and the Aesthetics of Ruins by : Guilherme Carréra
Download or read book Brazilian Cinema and the Aesthetics of Ruins written by Guilherme Carréra and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS) 2023 Award for Best First Monograph WINNER of the Association of Moving Image Researchers (AIM) 2022 Best Monograph prize Guilherme Carréra's compelling book examines imagery of ruins in contemporary Brazilian cinema and considers these representations in the context of Brazilian society. Carréra analyses three groups of unconventional documentaries focused on distinct geographies: Brasília - The Age of Stone (2013) and White Out, Black In (2014); Rio de Janeiro - ExPerimetral (2016), The Harbour (2013), Tropical Curse (2016) and HU Enigma (2011); and indigenous territories - Corumbiara: They Shoot Indians, Don't They? (2009), Tava, The House of Stone (2012), Two Villages, One Path (2008) and Guarani Exile (2011). In portraying ruinscapes in different ways, these powerful films articulate critiques of the notions of progress and (under) development in the Brazilian nation. Carréra invites the reader to walk amid the debris and reflect upon the strategies of spatial representation employed by the filmmakers. He addresses this body of films in relation to the legacies of Cinema Novo, Tropicália and Cinema Marginal, asking how these presentday films dialogue with or depart from previous traditions. Through this dialogue, he argues, the selected films challenge not only documentary-making conventions but also the country's official narrative.
