En buena medida, se trata de una historia de los textos, más que de una historia de la literatura, portadores de un peculiar código sígnico que descubre el pensamiento de la colectividad a la que se dirige. Por ello es esencial la fijación de unos contextos de producción literaria que expliquen, primero, el proceso de escritura, y después el proceso de construcción literaria. El discurso ideológico, el cuadro de relaciones genéricas, el espacio textual, las pautas de comportamiento, las categorías ideológicas, sociales y poéticas, son marcos contextuales que permiten ordenar unas líneas de desarrollo cronológico que permiten, a su vez, el reconocimiento de los marcos de producción textual en los que late una ideología que aspira a formar parte del propio proceso de configuración sígnica y cultural que se está creando. Este tercer volumen es la continuación de los dos anteriores ya publicados en la misma colección: “La creación del discurso prosístico: el entramado cortesano” (vol. I) y “El desarrollo de los géneros. La ficción caballeresca y el orden religioso” (vol. II). La amplitud y exhaustividad del conjunto de este estudio sobre la historia de la prosa medieval castellana, y el elevado número de títulos de la producción prosística del siglo XV han obligado a dividir este tercer y último tomo anunciado en dos volúmenes. El cuarto volumen, pues, recogerá la producción prosística durante el reinado de Enrique IV y los Reyes Católicos.

Book excerpt: Writing circa 731 CE, Bede professes in the introduction to his Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum that he will write his account of the past of the English following only vera lex historiae. Whether explicitly or (most often) implicitly, historians narrate the past according to a conception of what constitutes historical truth that emerges in the use of narrative strategies, of certain formulae or textual forms, in establishing one's own ideological authority or that of one's informants, in faithfulness to a cultural, narrative, or poetic tradition. If we extend the scope of what we understand by history (especially in a pre-modern setting) to include not just the writings of historians legitimated by their belonging to the Latinate matrix of christianized classical history writing, but also collective narratives, practices, rituals, oral poetry, liturgy, artistic representations, and acts of identity - all re-enacting the past as, or as representation of, the present, we find a plethora of modes of constructions of historical truth, narrative authority, and reliability. Vera Lex Historiae? will be constituted by contributions that reveal the variety of evental strategies by which historical truth was constructed in late antiquity and the earlier Middle Ages, and the range of procedures by which such narratives were established first as being historical and then as "true" histories. This is not only a matter of narrative strategies, but also habitus, ways of living and acting in the world that feed on and back into the commemoration and re-enactment of the past by communities and by individuals. In doing this, we hope to recover something of the plurality of modes of preserving and reenacting the past available in late antiquity and the earlier middle ages which we pass by because of preconceived notions of what constitutes history writing.

Book excerpt: Between the medieval conception of Christendom and the political visions of modernity, ideas of Europe underwent a transformative and catalytic period that saw a cultural process of renewed self-definition or self-Europeanization. The contributors to this volume address this process, analyzing how Europe was imagined between 1450 and 1750. By whom, in which contexts, and for what purposes was Europe made into a subject of discourse? Which forms did early modern ‘Europes’ take, and what functions did they serve? Essays examine the role of factors such as religion, history, space and geography, ethnicity and alterity, patronage and dynasty, migration and education, language, translation, and narration for the ways in which Europe turned into an ‘imagined community.’ The thematic range of the volume comprises early modern texts in Arabic, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, and Spanish, including plays, poems, and narrative fiction, as well as cartography, historiography, iconography, travelogues, periodicals, and political polemics. Literary negotiations in particular foreground the creative potential, versatility, and agency that inhere in the process of Europeanization, as well as a specifically early modern attitude towards the past and tradition emblematized in the poetics of the period. There is a clear continuity between the collection’s approach to European identities and the focus of cultural and postcolonial studies on the constructed nature of collective identities at large: the chapters build on the insights produced by these fields over the past decades and apply them, from various angles, to a subject that has so far largely eluded critical attention.
