Book Synopsis Strange Parallels: Volume 2, Mainland Mirrors: Europe, Japan, China, South Asia, and the Islands by : Victor Lieberman

This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blending fine-grained case studies with overarching theory, this book seeks both to integrate Southeast Asia into world history and to rethink much of Eurasia's premodern past. It argues that Southeast Asia, Europe, Japan, China, and South Asia all embodied idiosyncratic versions of a Eurasian-wide pattern whereby local isolates cohered to form ever larger, more stable, more complex political and cultural systems. With accelerating force, climatic, commercial, and military stimuli joined to produce patterns of linear-cum-cyclic construction that became remarkably synchronized even between regions that had no contact with one another. Yet this study also distinguishes between two zones of integration, one where indigenous groups remained in control and a second where agency gravitated to external conquest elites. Here, then, is a fundamentally original view of Eurasia during a 1,000-year period that speaks to both historians of individual regions and those interested in global trends.
Book Synopsis Families and Frontiers by : Kathryn Edwards
Download or read book Families and Frontiers written by Kathryn Edwards and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As put forth by Edwards, the eastern duchy and the western county of Burgundy constituted a frontier society from the death of Charles the Bold in 1477 until 1540. Through detailed case studies and family reconstructions of elites from the Saône River valley, specifically the cities of Dijon, Dole, and Besançon, this book examines the social, cultural, political, and economic relationships of the Burgundians on a local level. Edwards successfully challenges the national models still frequently used in modern historiography and offers a provocative alternative to better understand this anomalous area and the creation of pre-modern regional identity.

Book Synopsis Lourmarin in the Eighteenth Century by : Thomas F. Sheppard
Download or read book Lourmarin in the Eighteenth Century written by Thomas F. Sheppard and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971. In the 1970s, social historians of seventeenth-century France began examining the social changes in the ancien régime in an effort to reconstruct the events leading up to the French Revolution. Thomas Sheppard examines Lourmarin, a mainly Protestant village with a small textile industry. He seeks to answer a series of questions posed at the outset of the book: What was daily life like in an eighteenth-century French village? How was village government organized? To what extent did community leaders regulate village political life? What effect did the Revolution have on life in the village? Sheppard answers these questions with his archival work in Lourmarin. He concludes his work with an investigation of the effects of the Revolution on life in Lourmarin following 1789.
Book Synopsis Land Productivity and Agro-systems in the North Sea Area by : Bas J. P. van Bavel
Download or read book Land Productivity and Agro-systems in the North Sea Area written by Bas J. P. van Bavel and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with land productivity. Agriculture took the largest share of GNP before the mid-19th century and so economic growth must focus on agricultural transformations and measurements of agricultural productivity and its determinants. The 1963 study by B.H. Slicher van Bath on yield ratios across Europe was epoch-making. But more recent studies point to the necessity of placing and analysing land productivity more clearly within agricultural, ecological and socio-economic contexts. This publication, made by the CORN research team, reflects the new developments and findings in this field, for the North Sea area from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The book consists of three sections: the first contains national longterm overviews for each of the North Sea countries; the second part presents several case studies which examine the relationship between land productivity and agro-systems; and the last part consists of general comparative studies. The publication thus hopes to advance our understanding of developments in land productivity and to build the material for further research. This book deals with land productivity and agro-systems, and reflects the new developments and findings in this field by placing and analysing land productivity more clearly within agricultural, ecological and socio-economic contexts.

Book Synopsis Pont-de-Montvert by : Patrice L. R. Higonnet
Download or read book Pont-de-Montvert written by Patrice L. R. Higonnet and published by Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pont-de-Montvert is a small and shrunken Protestant village in an isolated part of the Cévennes mountains of Southern France. In 1700, the village was a complicated world where some fifteen hundred landless peasants, yeomen peasants, artisans, bourgeois, and nobles had unequal rights, unequal responsibilities, and different perceptions of politics. Today, Pont-de-Montvert is a much smaller, classless society, where social differences have little to do with politics and are due more to personal worth than to inherited wealth or status. In the seventeenth century, both rich and poor of Pont-de-Montvert had their own politics; one century later, at the time of the French Revolution, the political differences had vanished though the social ones remained. During the nineteenth century, the social structure was transformed, as were its connections with politics. In this book, P. L.-R. Higonnet explains these changes and describes the conditions of life for different people at different times in a village that is both a part of France and a world unto itself.
