Book excerpt: As the distinctive contribution of Islamic Spain to Arabic literature, the strophic muwashshahand zajal are still viewed by some as a development from putative Romance prototypes. No less than seven theories of origin of the Provençal lyrics have been proffered, foremost among them being the Arabic origins theory. This book lets the strophic muwashshah tell its own tale of a natural development in the context of classical Arabic literature.
Book Synopsis In Praise of Song by : Cynthia Robinson
Download or read book In Praise of Song written by Cynthia Robinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a reconstruction of the court culture of the taifa kings of al-Andalus (11th century A.D.), using both visual and textual evidence. A focus of particular attention is the court of the Banū Hūd at Zaragoza, and that dynasty's palace, the Aljafería. Principle written sources are not histories and chronicles, but the untranslated poetic anthologies of al-ḥimyarī and al-Fatḥ ibn Khāqān. The first part of the book addresses taifa visual and literary languages, with especial emphasis on connections between the literary and visual aspects of taifa aesthetics. The sections on the Aljafería's ornamental program will be of particular interest, not only to historians of Islamic art, but to students of all visual traditions with strong non-figural components. In addition, Part One also proposes that taifa court culture has been considered as a culture of "courtly love," and this argument also forms the point of departure for Part Two. The second part of the study uses luxury objects of Islamic and Limousine production as a point of departure for a detailed comparison of the thematics of taifa poetry in classical Arabic on the themes of courtly love and pleasures with those of the better-known Provençal tradition.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Courtly Literature Society was founded in 1973 to foster the study of all aspects of courtly literature - an interest not limited to European medievalists, although they provide one of the society's main focuses. The ICLS holds triennial international conferences, the third in Liverpool, England in 1980. Professor Glyn Burgess has edited a volume containing about one-third of the papers presented there. He opens it with the three plenary speakers, Charles Muscatine, Alan Deyermond, and John Benton, who illuminate conflicting aspects of life and literature held in tension in the productions of medieval court poets. The remaining 29 contributions represent the principal national literatures discussed at the Congress - English, French, German, Provencal and Spanish - and offer a wide variety of perspectives and approaches to courtly literature, including comparisons between literary and artistic artefacts.

Download or read book Festschrift written by Peter T. Ricketts and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Text: Peter T. Ricketts, Honorary Professor of French at the University of Birmingham, and Emeritus Professor at Queen Mary and Westfield, University of London, has led a long and distinguished career in the field of Romance Philology, and in Occitan studies in particular. In addition to his leading role in the Association Internationale d'Etudes Occitanes (AIEO), he has devoted many years in the service of Occitan Studies. Peter T. Ricketts is perhaps especially noted for an in-progress edition (with Cyril P. Hershon) of the Breviari d'Amor by Matfre Ermengaud, and for the Concordance of Medieval Occitan (CMO), a vast database the aim of which is to document the entire corpus of medieval Occitan texts and to make them available in electronic format as an active and exhaustive working tool for all scholars in the field. The first tranche of this project, on the poetry of the troubadours (Brepols 2001), has already been received with wide critical acclaim. The present publication includes articles by 63 specialists in fields as wide-ranging as history, literature, linguistics, philology, musicology, metrics and philosophy, addressing sources and topics from a variety of provenances in Old French and Old Occitan, as also in Medieval Latin, Castilian, Catalan, Middle High German, Hispano-Arabic, and Hebrew. It is divided into two major sections. The first is concerned with narrative texts: romance, epic, and religious literature; the second with the poetry of the troubadours: firstly their lyric legacy, its sources and influences, the vidas which accompany their transmission, the troubadours themselves, but also instances of their non-lyric output such as proverbs and ensenhamens. Also among the articles are editions of texts, some hitherto unpublished. Taken together, this collection represents a very broad panorama of current research, and offers a major contribution to the advancement of Medieval Studies.
