Boon, a male baboon from the same area Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Wise men Theme: Following Jesus - Faith Synopsis: Harriet is captured by Roman soldiers to be taken back to Rome. She discovers that a baboon friend named Boon has also been caught. When the Romans divert to Jerusalem, because Herod was in the market for animals, Harriet and Boon successfully execute an escape plan. On the run, and faced with the problem of finding their way back home, Harriet and Boon discover Bethlehem and decide to hide in one of the stables. It turns out to be the stable/house where Jesus had been born. Harriet and Boon witness the arrival of the wise men who bow in worship before the baby Jesus and give Him presents. Harriet is confused by the strange behavior of the men, but Boon was more interested in what everyone was saying. When a servant brings news that Herod’s soldiers are snooping around, everyone leaves quickly. Joseph tells Mary about his dream, and Herod’s plans to kill the baby, so they immediately begin the long journey to Egypt. Harriet and Boon leave quickly too, because they don’t want to be caught again, Then Boon has an idea. He realizes that if they follow Jesus and His family to Egypt, that they will be able to get home. Harriet leads the way as they find the family and keep their distance so as not to be seen. The journey is tough and Harriet really struggles, but they finally make it to the big river (Nile) that will take them home. By becoming refugees, Jesus and His family help Harriet and Boon to find their way back home.

Theme: Being Like Jesus-forgiveness Synopsis: Hector, a young grandson of Harriet, is accidentally captured by Roman soldiers when his friends play a joke on him that goes horribly wrong. Hector is both scared and angry. How could his friends do this to him? The soldiers decide to go to Jerusalem because Pilate is looking for animals. When they camp at Solomon’s Ponds near Bethlehem, the brakes on the wagon fail and Hector is able to escape. He discovers Pilate’s Aqueduct and follows it thinking it will take him home. But, he ends up at Jerusalem so he has to hide in the garden of Gethsemane. It is Passover and the time of Christ’s arrest, death and resurrection. A little girl named Ruth finds Hector, and tries to help him. Her father is Simon of Cyrene, the one who helps Jesus carry His cross. Cyrene is a city in Northern Africa. Hector witnesses the arrest of Jesus and is surprised that the Baby his grandmother told him about is a grown man. Later, Hector witnesses the crucifixion and is deeply moved when Jesus forgives the people who are hurting Him. Ruth and her dad decide to help Hector get home, so they come very early on Sunday Morning to get him. On the way to Joppa (a coastal town on the Mediterranean Sea), they meet some people from Emmaus who tell them that Jesus is alive. As the people talk about Jesus, Hector makes a decision. If he can get back home, he is going to tell his friends that he forgives them because that is what Jesus would do.

Book excerpt: A hippo's mouth is huge, measuring about four feet (1.2 m) from top to bottom when open. That’s big enough for a six-year-old kid to fit inside! These big mouths make a lot of noise. Hippos can produce a 115-decibel roar that’s as loud as a train engine. They also make softer noises such as croaks, clicks, and bellows that are heard in the air and underwater at the same time—something no other mammal can do. These are just some of the interesting facts kids will discover about these noisy giants. Spectacular photos and clear, easy-to-read text will engage emergent readers as they discover where hippos live, how they stay safe, and the different ways they communicate with each other. Kids will also learn the origin of the name hippopotamus, which is Greek for “River Horse”—and discover why this name is actually inaccurate. A “Sound Check” chart at the end of the book compares the decibel level of a hippo to familiar noises, including an ambulance, a lawnmower, and a train engine.

Book excerpt: Hippos are unusual in being genuinely amphibious. This has a fundamental effect on their physiology and way of life. Following a general introduction, there is a detailed description of hippo anatomy and physiology, including facts about their skin structure and physiology. Subsequent chapters are devoted to their social biology and ecology, including descriptions of their breeding and feeding ecology. Several extraordinary instances of carnivory, including an instance of cannibalism, are described. This book closes with three chapters devoted to the results of the author's survey on the distribution and abundance of the common hippo throughout Africa.

Book excerpt: They are famously fat—cumbersome, lethargic, and oddly charming for the way they lounge around half-submerged in muddy pools all day. Hippos are gregarious herbivores that don’t much like the heat, but as Edgar Williams shows in this colorful book, they can also be quite ill-tempered, and their huge mouths, sharp tusks, and powerful jaws can cut a small boat right in half. Taking readers into the swampy lands of Africa—as well as a few other surprising places—Hippopotamus tells the story of these iconic lumbering beasts. As Williams recounts, while Hippos are only found in Africa today, they actually originated in Asia. They are closer relatives to whales than to pigs or horses, as previously thought. And until the last Ice Age, you could find them as far north as Europe. Today the common hippo is confined to south, central, and east Africa, and its mysterious cousin, the Pygmy Hippo, is only found in the forests of Sierra Leone. From these natural confines, Williams explores how hippos have lived in much wider regions of the human imagination, from the hippo deity Taweret in Ancient Egypt to Obaysch, the first living hippo exhibited in the London Zoo in the nineteenth century, whom Charles Dickens called our “illustrious stranger.” A fascinating history of the hippo in natural and human history, this book also serves as a call for conservation efforts to protect this vulnerable animal.

Nobody knows how these rumors got started. But even if it's true (it is), it's not the whole story. Given the deep appreciation that hippos have for water, it's no wonder that your average hippopotamus seeks, finds, and offers a state of flow, no matter the situation. We have much to learn from their example. Accordingly, this helpful book follows two typical hippos as they calmly and mindfully go about their ordinary hippo day."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surviving works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides have been familiar to readers and theatregoers for centuries; but these works are far outnumbered by their lost plays. Between them these authors wrote around two hundred tragedies, the fragmentary remains of which are utterly fascinating. In this, the second volume of a major new survey of the tragic genre, Matthew Wright offers an authoritative critical guide to the lost plays of the three best-known tragedians. (The other Greek tragedians and their work are discussed in Volume 1: Neglected Authors.) What can we learn about the lost plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides from fragments and other types of evidence? How can we develop strategies or methodologies for 'reading' lost plays? Why were certain plays preserved and transmitted while others disappeared from view? Would we have a different impression of the work of these classic authors – or of Greek tragedy as a whole – if a different selection of plays had survived? This book answers such questions through a detailed study of the fragments in their historical and literary context. Making use of recent scholarly developments and new editions of the fragments, The Lost Plays of Greek Tragedy makes these works fully accessible for the first time.

When he falls down, forgets a number, or calls a buffalo a “buggalo,” Roosevelt gets embarrassed. His cheeks turn red, and his sister teases him, saying he’s a blushful hippopotamus. Thankfully, Roosevelt has Lombard, an egret friend with a sense of perspective. Lombard reminds Roosevelt that though he may be blushful, he is also hopeful, thoughtful, and wonderful in many ways—and his sister’s words don’t mean a thing. This fixed-layout ebook, which preserves the design and layout of the original print book, features read-along narration.
