Book Synopsis HM the Horizontal Metropolis by : Chiara Cavalieri
Download or read book HM the Horizontal Metropolis written by Chiara Cavalieri and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two contrasting terms are joined to conjugate the traditional idea of metropolis with horizontality; to combine the center of a vast territory--hierarchically organized, dense, vertical, and produced by polarization--with the idea of a more diffuse, isotropic urban condition, where center and periphery blur. Beyond a simplistic center versus periphery opposition, the concept of a horizontal metropolis reveals the dispersed condition as a potential asset, rather than a limit, to the construction of a sustainable and innovative urban dimension. Around 1990, Terry McGee, an urban researcher at University of British Columbia, coined the term desakota, deriving from Indonesian “desa” (village) and “kota” (city). Desakota areas typically occur in Asia, especially South East Asia. The term describes an area situated outside the periurban zone, often sprawling alongside arterial and communication roads, sometimes from one agglomeration to the next. They are characterized by high population density and intensive agricultural use, but differ from densely populated rural areas by more urban-like characteristics. The new book The Horizontal Metropolis investigates such areas alongside examples in the US, Italy, and Switzerland. The study highlights the advantages of the concept and its relevance under economical, ecological, and social aspects. The concept reflects a vision of global urbanization that does no longer allow for “outside” areas and that will test the urban ecosystem to its limits.

Download or read book A Tour on the Underground Railroad along the Ohio River written by Nancy Stearns Theiss and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running for 664 miles along Kentucky's border, the Ohio River provided a remarkable opportunity for the enslaved to escape to free soil in Indiana and Ohio. The river beckoned fugitive slave Henry Bibb onto a steamboat at Madison, Indiana, headed to Cincinnati, where he discovered the Underground Railroad. Upriver from Cincinnati, a lantern signal high on a hill from the Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio, stirred others to flee for freedom. These stories and more along the borderland of the Ohio River also served as the setting for Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which became an inspiration of human resistance. Author Nancy Theiss, PhD, takes readers on a tour through American history to places of courage and sacrifice.

Book Synopsis Duplex Architects by : Ludovic Balland
Download or read book Duplex Architects written by Ludovic Balland and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex Architects exemplify innovative housing design in Switzerland and what it can contribute to urban development. Duplex Architects was founded in 2007 in Zurich and now also run offices in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and, most recently, in Paris. They have gained an excellent reputation internationally for their designs of various scales and across a vast range of typologies. This first monograph on Duplex Architects' work offers a close look at their approach to housing design. Five projects in Switzerland are documented extensively through a wealth of images, plans, and visualizations, exemplifying the firm's position on urban planning, typology research, and materiality and demonstrating their utterly independent way of working. Urban scale, search for new forms of communal living, the importance of community, and a collaborative design process are at the core of Duplex Architects' explorations into residential architecture. Nele Dechmann's text and Ludovic Balland's photo essay serve to illuminate Duplex Architects' work each in their own way. Further texts are contributed by the firm's founding partners Anne Kaestle and Dan Schürch, as well as by other expert authors, who cast their own personal glance at the five projects featured in this book.
