Book excerpt: The notion of “happily ever after” does not always hold true as soon as a woman finds her partner. More than thirty percent of women around the world are severely affected by intimate partner violence (IPV). Intimate partner violence against women can be committed by a husband, or a long-term partner and can be prevalent in physical, sexual or psychological forms. While the existing literature on IPV focuses on women’s empowerment through financial independence and in understanding the causes behind IPV, little work has been done on quantitatively analyzing the relationship between higher education of women and the prevalence of intimate partner violence. This paper will use cross-country level data from the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations to analyze whether higher education among women drives trends in the prevalence of intimate partner violence. In addition, this paper also qualitatively presents cases of IPV from around the world to provide further evidence of its prevalence and the need for policy attention. To test the hypothesis that higher education plays a significant role in the reduction of prevalence of IPV, the paper uses fixed effects models controlling for potential omitted variables. The results of these estimations indicate that higher education plays a significant role in the reduction of IPV at the baseline level, and even when controlling for legal factors. These findings support the notion that enhancing female education constitutes an important policy instrument for reducing IPV.
