Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Education in Indiana Sir: The monograph which I have the honor herewith to submit gives a sketch of the history of Higher Education in Indiana. It con tains an outline of the free common school system of the State, a brief account of the State's educational history in the development of its common schools; and a historical account of the origin, growth, and development and the present condition of Indiana's various institutions for Higher Education. It calls attention to the early land legislation of the Continental Congress, and to the important influence of that legislation upon the future States of the Northwest; to the incidents and causes leading to the adoption of the Ordinance of 1787, and to the great Importance of that Ordinance in the subsequent educational de veiopment of these commonwealths; and the sketch shows that from the earliest Territorial days until the present time, the relation of the State to education, both elementary and higher, has been close and constant. At no time has the State acknowledged that any department of education, from the elementary schools to the university, was beyond its province. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Education in Indiana, Vol. 10 The direct work Of the State in higher learning is to be especially noticed. The most interesting phase in the history and development of edu cation in the West is to be seen in the attitude of the State. There never has been a time when the right of government to provide for education Of some kind has been called in question by any considerable body of thinking people. Both the elementary and the higher educa tion were provided for by many Of the early colonies, especially by those of New England. And from the time of the first land grant for common school purposes by the Congress of 1785, State aid to education has been an acknowledged principle of the American people - even those Of the most conservative individualism conceding, in some measure, the right and duty of the State to educate. Special mention also should be made of the very valu able and frequent and cheerful service rendered by Mr. J. P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Memorial Volume: Indiana University, 1820-1920 For an immediate illustration, take Indiana in the middle of the last century. Our people had the civilized mother tongue. But in 1840 fourteen per cent of the adults could not read or write, and in 1850 twenty-two per cent Of them could not read or write. They had schools, academies, colleges, men and women of learning and cultivation. But in 1848 forty four per cent of our people voted against free public schools, and in this county, the seat of this University, seventy-nine and four tenths per cent of the people voted against free public schools. They had the law, the ancient law developed in southern and western Europe since before the Christian era, and some men learned in the law. But in 1852 our people wrote it into their constitution that a man might be a counsellor at the bar however ignorant, and they prescribed that in criminal cases a jury how ever ignorant should be the sole judges Of the law. They were not without the elements of art. They had music. They had the pioneer melodies that Riley loved to hear the Old Band play. We are not ashamed of the melody nor of the Band. But the great music was not there. The empire of Beethoven was as far from our people generally as the empire of Genghis Khan. The making of a home in America by Europeans since 1492 is the greatest event Of modern history. But everywhere at first it involved descent.
