Book excerpt: Data are presented on the mechanical and physical properties of high- purity and normal uranium and for a range of dilute uranium alloys at temperatures up to 700 deg C. The results of thermal conductivity and thermal expansion determinations for a range of alloys are discussed, and some results on the latent heat of fusion and volume change on melting are presented. Results of dilute alloy creep tests are reported and correlated with thermal cycling data and resistence to swelling under irradiation. (J.R.D.).

Book excerpt: The effects of pile irradiations on the physical properties and corrosion resistance of U-- Mo, U-- Nb; and U--Si alloys are reported. The dimensional stability under irradiation of the gamma phase U-- Mo and U-- Nb alloys is excellent; however, an isotropic volume increase of 4 to 6% per wt.% burnup may limit the ultimate fuel element life. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabilization of the gamma phases. The U/ sub 3/Si alloy, on the other hand, suffered severe deterioration, particularly of corrosion resistance. Changes in electrical resistivity, hardness, mechanical properties, and crystal structure are presented and the mechanisms producing the observed changes discussed.

Book excerpt: A study was made of the phase relations and the properties of uranium-fissium alloys which have compositions bracketing that intended for the first core loading of Experimental Breeder Reactor II. The fissium aggregate in the alloys consisted of the elements Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, and Pd. Phase relations are shown to parallel closely those in the dominant U--Mo--Ru ternary system. The uranium gamma phase is stabilized down to 552 deg C, while the beta phase is entirely suppressed at high fissium contents. Certain crystallographic data are given and the minor phases that occur in the alloys are identified. In cast and gamma-quenched alloys the retention of the high-temperature gamma phase produced low hardness and low density. The thermal expansion behavior of the alloys is shown to be dependent upon composition and prior thermal history. Thermal conductivity data are presented for uranium and the uranium-fission alloys. The thermal conductivities of the alloys decrease with increasing fissium concentration.

CORROSION MECHANISM OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS IN HIGH TEMPERATURE WATER. written by and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors affecting corrosion resistance both of bare and of clad uranium-base alloys are reviewed and a mechanism proposed for their corrosion behavior. For unclad gamma-phase uranium alloys exposed to a high temperature water corrodent, it is proposed that the corrosion rate is determined primarily by the oxidation of the alloy by water. This behavior is contrary to that of alpha uranium in which the corrosion rate is primarily determined by the formation and subsequent oxidation of a nonadherent hydride layer. In gamma- phase alloys the hydrogen released by the corrosion reaction, rather than forming the thermodynamically stable UH3 phase, dissolves (at least in part) in the base metal where it precipitates as a metastable hydride. The amount of hydrogen absorbed by the metal and hence precipitating as the metastable hydride may be markedly reduced by the addition of hydrogen depolarizers such as nickel or platinum to the water or to the metal. Similarly the amount of absorbed hydrogen may be reduced by introducing sinks that preferentially absorb hydrogen. Both alpha uranium and zirconium were shown to be suitable sinks. Precipitated hydride hardens and embrittles the matrix and by its preferential corrosion eventually leads to discontinuous failure. The hydride may be made to precipitate in a less harmful manner by heat treatments which precipitate nucleating and hardening impurities. The mode of the precipitation is shown to be sensitive to stress; in fact, the assumption of elastic stress as contributing to hydride precipitation is considered necessary to explain the distribution of the precipitate during corrosion. In order to apply a gammaphase fuel alloy as a fuel element material, it is necessary primarily to reduce the amount of hydrogen absorbed by the fuel. This can be done by cladding the fuel with a zirconium- base alloy. Under such conditions it has been shown that fuel element lives in excess of 4 years should be obtainable with properly fabricated fuel elements before they are subject to corrosion failure. Optimum fuel element corrosion life can be achieved by decreasing the general corrosion rate, increasing the hydrogen solubility, increasing the hydrogen diffusion rate, and maintaining a proper clad-fuel bond. For uranium-base alloys such as U3Si that do not form a hydride during hot water corrosion, use of a Zircaloy clad is unnecessary. Therefore, the development of alternate cladding materials such as Al for corrosion resistant fuel elements is predicted upon the development of uranium- base alloys that do not corrode by a hydride mechanism. In addition to U3 both Zr-U alloys and the strained alpha uranium-base alloys do not appear to corrode by a hydride mechanism. (auth).

Book excerpt: Alloys of uranium with niobium show good corrosion resistance in degassed, distilled water to about 315 degrees C. The alloys must be quenched from the gamma phase in order to have high temperature corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance is destroyed by over-aging at temperatures as low as 350 degrees C. Of those tried, the alloy with best resistance to thermal aging is the uranium-5% zirconium-1.5% niobium alloy. At 290 degrees C, optimum heat treatment can result in a rate of corrosion of about 6 mg/cm sq/day. Certain moderate aging treatments, e.g., 400 degree C for two hours, result in improved corrosion resistance in the initial stages of corrosion. Alloys containing 3% niobium and small amounts of tin show promise. In addition to aging, the alloys are also sensitive to hydrogen content. Ultimate corrosion failure is believed due to absorption of corrosion product hydrodgen.

Book excerpt: The addition of alloying elements to base alloys of Th containing 5 and 10 wt% U was investigated with regard to alloy structures and elevated- temperature mechanical properties. The alloys developed possess elevated temperature tensile and stress-rupture strengths of essentially twice those associated with binary Th-5 and 10 wt% U alloys at 60O to 800 deg C. The greater strength of these alloys should resuit in improved resistance to radiation induced swelling at high temperatures. Noticeable improvement in elevated-temperature mechanical properties resulted from the addition of 2 and 5 wt% Zr to the Th-5 and Th-10 wt% U base alloys. Zr was found to be the most effective additive in improving elevated-temperature mechanical properties, although significant improvement was noted with additions of Nb, Mo, C, Al, and Be. Both solidsolution strengthening and dispersion strengthening of the Th --U base alloys were encountered. It was found that a fine intragranular distribution of the secondary U phase improved the mechanical properties of the alloys studied. Structures with optimum properties were produced by careful control of the arc-melting procedure and by solution heat treating at 1350 deg C followed by aging at 850 deg C. Preliminary testing was performed to determine the elevatedtemperature mechanical properties of Th metal and of the Th --U base alloys. Irradiation specimens of the most promising alloys were prepared. These specimens were encapsulated and are ready for irradiation testing at 800 deg C and for subjection to burnups of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 Mwd/ ton. (auth).
