The Infant-Toddler COR looks at the whole child from the ages of 6 weeks to 3 years. Unlike diagnostic instruments that focus narrowly on problems and deficits, the COR focuses on childrenÂ's strengths. By providing a complete and accurate picture of each infantÂ's or toddlerÂ's developing abilities, the COR helps caregivers do a better job of supporting the development of individual children and of planning for the group as a whole. The COR is observation based. Information for completing the COR is gathered by those who know children best-their caregivers and parents. Adults record COR observations as they care for, play with, and attend to children rather than during artificial testing situations. Individuals from outside the program may also use the COR for research or evaluation purposes. The kit contains all the necessary materials for a yearÂ's observational assessment of up to 12 children. This observational tool (1) Assesses broad areas of child development rather than physical or language milestones or deficits only. (2) Looks at childrenÂ's progress in six key areas: sense of self; social relations; creative representation; movement; communication and language; exploration and early logic. (3) Helps early childhood staff get to know each child better and, based on this, to plan for materials, experiences, and routines that are attuned to each childÂ's abilities and needs. (4) Is based on observations conducted over a period of several months during the normal activities of the program; its use does not alter or disrupt the programÂ's routine in any way. (5) Educates caregivers about child development. (6) Provides a framework for communicating with parents about each childÂ's developmental needs. (7) Provides forms for summarizing the progress of individual children and the group.
