Book excerpt: High power magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters are being developed as cost effective propulsion systems for cargo transport to lunar and Mars bases, crewed missions to Mars and the outer planets, and robotic deep space exploration missions. Electromagnetic MPD thrusters have demonstrated, at the laboratory level, the ability to process megawatts of electrical power while providing significantly higher thrust densities than electrostatic electric propulsion systems. The ability to generate higher thrust densities permits a reduction in the number of thrusters required to perform a given mission, and alleviates the system complexity associated with multiple thruster arrays. The specific impulse of an MPD thruster can be optimized to meet given mission requirements, from a few thousand seconds with heavier gas propellants up to 10,000 seconds with hydrogen propellant. In support of programs envisioned by the NASA Office of Exploration Systems, Glenn Research Center is developing and testing quasi-steady MW-class MPD thrusters as a prelude to steady state high power thruster tests. This paper provides an overview of the GRC high power pulsed thruster test facility, and presents preliminary performance data for a quasi-steady baseline MPD thruster geometry. Book excerpt: Despite the present great lead of ion engines in development level, performance and life for sizes up to several kW, new interest in magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters for higher power levels (up to hundreds of kW) has arisen in recent years. Mission studies showed specific impulse values between 1000 and 2000 s for orbit raising and orbit transfers for optimized mass savings and trip times, and advantages for MPD propulsion even with relatively low efficiencies. With the probable realization of the SP-100 nuclear space power plant, sufficient power would also be available for steady state MPD propulsion, so that the benefits of these thrusters versus pulsed ones could be utilized; i.e., the ruggedness and simplicity of power and propellant conditioning and the about 3 orders of magnitude smaller cathode erosion. But there are also disadvantages of steady state thrusters; e.g., with quasi-steady ones (but with other geometries) the achieved efficiencies and specific impulses were in some higher. The research work covered in this report deals with these and related problems: in chapter two, the experimental results with nozzle-type and cylindrical thrusters are presented. The influence of cathode position, ambient pressure, anode gas injection and propellant type on the performance is investigated. The thruster design studies and the heat transfer calculations for the MPD thruster with a radiation-cooled anode are reported.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters have a number of features that make them attractive for use in several intermediate term missions planned by the U.S. Air Force and Nasa. Theoretical studies and laboratory scale pulsed tests performed to date have established the basic characteristics of MPD thrusters and have provided a basis for optimism regarding their eventual performance. The high (multimegawatt) power sources for space use currently being developed in the Strategic Defense Initiative can be adapted for use with MPD thrusters. Given these conditions, a major requirement for MPD thruster development is the availability of a suitable prototype test facility since successful development of multimegawatt MPD thrusters will depend, to a great extent, on testing them under realistic steady characteristics, life cycle expectancy, electrode erosion rates, and other data essential to the design of working thrusters. The major technical obstacle for ground testing of MPD thrusters in a space simulation facility is the inability of state-of-the-art vacuum systems to provide the tremendous pumping speeds that are required for multimegawatt MPD thrusters. This is true for other types of electric propulsion devices as well. This report discusses the efforts of a first phase or an evaluation of steady state MPD thruster test facilities and addresses the conceptual design of vacuum pumping concepts for this application were evaluated and are reported herein.
