The requirements for cell level ATM network modeling and simulation are the outlined followed by a description of an ATM traffic and network (ATM-TN) simulator. This ATM-TN simulator is built upon parallel simulation mechanisms to achieve the high performance needed to execute the huge number of cell events required for a realistic network scenario. Results for several simulation experiments are reported using this high performance simulator including scenarios for the Wnet and OPERA networks. Finally, a preliminary evaluation of the application of high performance simulation to the design and analysis of ATM network performance is provided."--[Page i].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are widely considered to be the new generation of high speed communication systems both for broadband public information highways and for local and wide area private networks. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to simplify the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to limit transmission delays. However, to support such diverse services on one integrated communication network, it is most essential, through careful engineering, to achieve a fruitful balance amongst the conflicting requirements of different quality of service constraints ensuring that one service does not have adverse implications on another. Over recent years there has been a great deal of progress in research and development of ATM technology, but there are still many interesting and important problems to be resolved such as traffic characterisation and control, routing and optimisation, ATM switching techniques and the provision of quality of service. This book presents thirty-two research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting latest original achievements in the theory and practice of performance modelling of ATM networks worldwide. These papers were selected, subject to peer review, from those submitted as extended and revised versions out of fifty-nine shorter papers presented at the Second IFIP Workshop on "Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks" July 4-7, 1994, Bradford University. At least three referees from the scientific committee and externally were involved in the selection of each paper.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Accommodating VBR traffic sources can cause severe congestion problems on ATM networks. A prolonged congestion leads to severe buffer overflow, cell loss and degradation in the required service quality. There have been various flow control schemes suggested to avoid congestion and to allocate network resources efficiently. Current research has been limited to a single node basis and issues related to having multiple nodes in an ATM network have not yet been explored. Generic analytical models are also difficult to come up with, since there is no general consensus on future B-ISDN traffic models. This creates a need for an efficient and flexible simulator which allows researchers to evaluate performance of high speed networks with various multimedia sources. The APEX simulator was designed and implemented to meet this need."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATM Network Performance describes a unified approach to ATM network management. The focus is on satisfying quality-of-service requirements for individual B-ISDN connections. For an ATM network of output-buffer switches, the author describes how the basic network resources (switch buffer memory and link transmission bandwidth) should be allocated to achieve the required quality-of-service connections. The performance of proposed bandwidth scheduling policies is evaluated. Both single node and end-to-end performance results are given. In particular, these results are applied to resource provisioning problems for prerecorded (stored) video and video teleconferencing. The flow control problem for available bit rate traffic is also described. This book is intended for a one-term course in performance of Broadband Integrated-Services Digital Networks (B-ISDNs) based on a type of packet-switched communication network called Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The level of presentation is at the first year of graduate studies and for professionals working in the field, but it may be accessible to senior undergraduates as well. Some familiarity with ATM standards is assumed as such standards are only briefly outlined. All of the required background in discrete-time queueing theory is supplied. Exercises are given at the end of chapters. Solutions and/or hints to selected exercises are given in an Appendix.

Book excerpt: Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Tony Kenyon provides the tools to solve medium- to large-scale data network design problems from the ground up. He lays out a practical and systematic approach that integrates network planning, research, design, and deployment, using state-of-the-art techniques in performance analysis, cost analysis, simulation, and topology modeling. The proliferation and complexity of data networks today is challenging our ability to design and manage them effectively. A new generation of Internet, e-commerce, and multimedia applications has changed traditional assumptions on traffic dynamics, and demands tight quality of service and security guarantees. These issues, combined with the economics of moving large traffic volumes across international backbones, mean that the demands placed on network designers, planners, and managers are now greater than ever before. High-Performance Data Network Design is a "must have" for anyone seriously involved in designing data networks. Together with the companion volume, Data Networks: Routing, Security, and Performance Optimization, this book gives readers the guidance they need to plan, implement, and optimize their enterprise infrastructure.·Provides real insight into the entire design process·Includes basic principles, practical advice, and examples of design for industrial-strength enterprise data networks·Integrates topics often overlooked—backbone optimization, bottleneck analysis, simulation tools, and network costing

Book excerpt: "The requirements of today's telecommunication systems to support high bandwidth and added flexibility brought about the expansion of (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) ATM as a new method of high-speed data transmission. Various analytical and simulation methods may be used to estimate the performance of ATM switches ... In this work, simulation is accomplished by utilizing the ATM library--an object-oriented software tool, which uses 'software chips' for building ATM switches"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: In this research project, several issues related to providing Quality of Service (QoS) for command and control applications running on ATM networks were investigated. The QoS requirements are specified in terms of maximum delay, jitter, and cell loss probability. In this context, new AIM switch designs, algorithms for traffic control, routing, and multicasting were developed. Novel neural network based techniques for traffic characterization and admission control at the node and network levels were developed. A new multicast switch architecture was designed for use in high performance ATM networks and its performance as evaluated via simulation. New algorithms for efficiently routing ATM cells in input buffered switches were developed and their performance was evaluated.
