Two severe pressure gradients were imposed on the boundary layer by interchangeable contoured centerbodies inside a large hollow cylinder for cold-wall and adiabatic-wall temperature conditions. Imposition of either of the adverse pressure gradients significantly decreased the natural growth rate of the boundary-layer displacement thickness, whereas the favorable pressure gradient had opposite effects; momentum thickness was relatively unaffected by pressure gradient. A pressure gradient increase of about 30 percent caused relatively small changes in the skin friction, heat-transfer rate, and the characteristic boundary-layer parameters. Wall cooling effects (T sub w/t sub 0 approximately 0.3) on the boundary-layer thickness parameters were nearly insignificant, in comparison with the adiabatic-wall results. Heat-transfer distributions were similar to the local skin friction results based on free-stream conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of mild pressure gradients on the mean and turbulent flow of high-speed boundary layers. Three Mach numbers (1.7, 3.0 and 5.0) were investigated. Three pressure gradients were examined; a zero pressure gradient (ZPG), a favorable pressure gradient (FPG), and a combined pressure gradient (CPG). The CPG consisted of an adverse pressure gradient followed by a favorable pressure gradient. Conventional pressure probes, hot- wire and particle image velocimetry (PIV) were used to examine the flow. Measurement included mean velocity, velocity turbulence intensity, mass flux turbulence intensity and energy spectra. Instantaneous (10 nsec) Mie scattering flow visualizations were acquired. Qualitatively, the flow visualizations indicated that the turbulent flow structures were strongly affected by the pressure gradients. For the Mach 2,8 case, the PIV contours and the hot-wire profiles both indicated that the boundary layer thickness increased by 40% and decreased by 100% relative to the ZPG for the favorable and adverse pressure gradients, respectively. Further, the PIV and hot-wire data indicated that the axial turbulence intensity levels increased by 22% for the CPG and decreased by 25% for the FPG. The energy spectra data indicated that once a pressure gradient was applied (favorable or adverse) the low frequency energy increased followed by a rapid decay. Lastly, it was found that nominally 20 to 30 PIV images were sufficient for mean flow boundary layer velocities, but 93 images (the maximum recorded in this study) were insufficient to adequately resolve Reynolds shear stresses.

However, many of the basic turbulent flow processes in this regime are poorly understood and are beyond the realm of modern direct numerical simulations Previous studies have shown that curvature driven pressure gradients significantly alter the state of the turbulence in high-speed boundary layers; the turbulence levels have been shown to decrease by large amounts (up to 100 percent) and the Reynolds shear stress has been shown to change sign. However, most of our understanding is based on point measurement techniques such as hot-wire and Laser Doppler anemometry acquired at low to moderate supersonic Mach numbers (i.e., M = 2-3). After reviewing the available literature, the following scientific questions remain unanswered pertaining to the effect of favorable pressure gradients: (1) How is state of the mean flow and turbulence statistics altered? (2) How is the structure of wall turbulence; break-up, stretch or a combination? (3) How are the Reynolds stress component production mechanisms altered? (4) What is the effect of Mach number on the above processes? To answer these questions and to enhance the current database, an experimental analysis was performed to provide high fidelity documentation of the mean and turbulent flow properties using two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) along with flow visualizations of a high speed (M4.88=), high Reynolds number (Re[is almost equal to]36,000) supersonic turbulent boundary layer with curvature-driven favorable pressure gradients (a nominally zero, a weak, and a strong favorable pressure gradient). From these data, detailed turbulence analyses were performed including calculating classical mean flow and turbulence statistics, examining turbulent stress production, and performing quadrant decomposition of the Reynolds stress for each pressure gradient case. It was shown that the effect of curvature-driven favorable pressure gradients on the turbulent structure of a supersonic boundary layer was significant. For the strong pressure gradient model, the turbulent shear stress changed sign throughout the entire boundary layer; a phenomena was not observed to this magnitude in previous studies. Additionally, significant changes were seen in the turbulent structure of the boundary layer. It is believed that hairpin vortices organized within the boundary layer are stretched and then broken up over the favorable pressure gradient. Energy from these hairpin structures is transferred to smaller turbulent eddies as well as back into the mean flow creating a fuller mean velocity profile. It was determined that the effects of favorable pressure gradients on the basic structure of a turbulent Mach 5.0 boundary layer were significant, therefore increasing the complexity of computational modeling.

Even at high Mach numbers, laminar boundary layers under constant conditions are well understood and well represented theoretically. Abrupt changes in pressure gradient, whether from geometry or incident shock waves, cause significant deviation from these theories. This thesis sets out to explore this modification. The chosen, computational investigation used the change between zero and adverse linear constant pressure gradient flows with the computational geometry consisting of a flat plate section and a compression curve. The computations covered a range of adverse pressure gradients [Mathematical equation appears here. To view, please open pdf attachment], Reynolds numbers (Re[Cartesian streamwise distance (m)]0 = 87500 to 90000000) and Mach numbers (4 to 8). The effect of pressure gradient, Reynolds number and Mach number on the equilibrium or non-equilibrium change between pressure gradients was investigated. It was observed that flows of this type can be divided into three sections: a fully developed zero pressure gradient flow, a fully developed adverse pressure gradient flow and an interaction region between the two. The stronger the pressure gradient, the more non-equilibrium the response of the boundary layer to the change in pressure became. Inertial forces came to dominate in the interaction region and viscous effects only reasserted themselves further downstream. This was illustrated by the significant transverse variations in pressure occurring in this interaction region. The investigation is extended to turbulent boundary layers modelled using the Baldwin- Lomax turbulence model.
