Book excerpt: THE MOST COMPLETE GUIDE TO HIGH FREQUENCY OVER-THE-HORIZON RADAR Written by a leading global expert on the topic, High Frequency Over-the-Horizon Radar provides in-depth coverage of the signal processing models and techniques that have significantly advanced OTH radar technology. This pioneering work describes the fundamental principles of OTH radar design and operation, and then delves into the mathematical modeling of HF signals received by actual OTH radar systems based on experimental data analysis. Numerous examples illustrate the practical application of modern adaptive signal processing techniques to real and simulated OTH radar data. This authoritative text covers skywave and surface-wave systems and is an invaluable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners working with OTH radar systems and technologies.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several Radar Target Identification (RTI) techniques have been developed at The Ohio State University in recent years. Using the ElectroScience Laboratory compact range a large database of coherent RCS measurement has been constructed for several types of targets (aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles) at a variety of polarizations, aspect angles, and frequency bands. This extensive database has been used to analyze the performance of several different classification algorithms through the use of computer simulations. In order to optimize classification performance, Ksienski concluded the radar frequency range should lie in the Rayleigh-resonance frequency range, where the wavelength is on the order of or larger than the target size. For aircraft and ships with general dimensions on the order of 10 meters to 100 meters it is apparent that the High Frequency (HF) band provides optimal classification performance. Since existing HF radars are currently being used for detection and tracking or aircraft and ships of these dimensions, it is natural to further investigate the possibility of using these existing radars as the measurement devices in a radar target classification system. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of global ionospheric research from the polar caps to equatorial regions It's more than a century since scientists first identified the ionosphere, the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation. Our understanding of this dynamic part of the near-Earth space environment has greatly advanced in recent years thanks to new observational technologies, improved numerical models, and powerful computing capabilities. Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of historic developments, recent advances, and future directions in ionospheric research. Volume highlights include: Behavior of the ionosphere in different regions from the poles to the equator Distinct characteristics of the high-, mid-, and low-latitude ionosphere Observational results from ground- and space-based instruments Ionospheric impacts on radio signals and satellite operations How earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth cause disturbances in the ionosphere The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Book excerpt: Tracking of an aircraft flying at an altitude of 100 ft above the sea was accomplished over a radial range interval ranging from 1400 to 1000 naut mi by using the Project MADRE radar. Simultaneous tracking, over part of this range interval, of another aircraft at 10,000 ft illustrates the target altitude independence characteristic of over-the-horizon techniques. The equipment used in this demonstration is a coherent, pulse doppler, high-frequency radar using the refractive properties of the ionosphere to provide beyond line-of-sight (over-the-horizon) coverage.

Book excerpt: The basic concept of the structure and properties of the ionosphere are discussed to explain how the performance of the over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) system is affected. An overview of the OTHR system characteristics and performance are presented along with some applications currently used around the world, including their geographic location and historical background. The waveforms used for the OTHR systems include simple pulse, pulse Doppler, phased-coded pulse, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), and frequency modulated interrupt continuous wave (FMICW). Other characteristics such as target detection methods and the skywave OTHR range equation are also discussed. Simulation results indicate that the minimum required input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a target with 100 m2 cross section at 3,500 km footprint range is 52.4 - dB at c f = 14.5 MHz. In addition, a noncooperative intercept receiver requires a minimum input SNR of 94 dB for a square law detector and 97 dB for a linear detector for interception at a footprint range of 3,500 km at c f = 14.5 MHz. A model of the maximum detection range for the Chinese FMCW OTH backscatter (OTH-B) radar was developed in MATLAB. An intercept receiver maximum interception range is also analyzed. A ray tracing technique is also used in PROPLAB to present a more detailed analysis. The analysis includes the electron density profile, the maximum usable frequency, the critical frequency of the layers, the skip zone, and the signal quality. The simulations focused on the Chinese OTH-B radar system are to investigate the Chinese surveillance capabilities.
