Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

Searches for those deviations are model-independent and cover a wide range of possible new physics. This thesis describes the measurement of exclusive production of W-boson pairs and the search for WW\gamma\gamma anomalous quartic gauge couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using a data set corresponding to 20.2 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012. This analysis considers the W+W- decay modes leading to e\mu leptons. At the LHC, exclusive interactions are characterized by the absence of additional activity in the vicinity of interaction vertices. A technique based on tracks was developed to select the exclusive event candidates. The technique accepts approximately 60% of the signal, while eliminates most of the background due to suppression by 3--4 orders of magnitude. Additional background reduction is achieved by rejecting the region pT^{e\mu}

The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of {radical s}=7 TeV and {radical s}=8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined fits probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson.

The measurement targets ttH final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons. Data used in this measurement are recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2016 and 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 /fb and 41.5 /fb, respectively. The measured signal rate is 0.96+0.34-0.31 times the expected production rate in the standard model. The observed (expected) significance of the ttH signal is 3.2 sigma (4.0 sigma). A proposed FPGA-based track finding system for the CMS Level-1 trigger upgrade in preparation for the High-Luminosity LHC is also presented in this thesis.

Once the data are unblinded, this measurement is predicted to be the world's most precise measurement of mH to date. The data used in the analysis were produced by proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during Run 2 (2016-2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137.1 fb-1, and were collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment. Using data sets from the same LHC run period, a search for low-mass dilepton resonances in Higgs boson decays to the 4l final state is also conducted. Book excerpt: Properties of the Higgs boson with mass near 125 GeV are measured in proton-proton collisions with the CMS experiment at the LHC. Comprehensive sets of production and decay measurements are combined. The decay channels include [gamma][gamma], ZZ, WW, [tau][tau], bb, and [mu][mu] pairs. The data samples were collected in 2011 and 2012 and correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 fb−1 at 7 TeV and up to 19.7 fb−1 at 8 TeV. From the high-resolution [gamma][gamma] and ZZ channels, the mass of the Higgs boson is determined to be 125.02\, +0.26-0.27(stat)+0.14-0.15(syst) GeV. For this mass value, the event yields obtained in the different analyses tagging specific decay channels and production mechanisms are consistent with those expected for the standard model Higgs boson. The combined best-fit signal relative to the standard model expectation is 1.00 " 0.09 (stat), +0.08 -0.07 (theo) " 0.07 (syst) at the measured mass. The couplings of the Higgs boson are probed for deviations in magnitude from the standard model predictions in multiple ways, including searches for invisible and undetected decays. No significant deviations are found.
