It will be possible to download, record, send and receive images and videosequences. Even if we have more bandwidth, images and video data must be compressed before it can be sent, because of the amount of information it contains. MPEG-4 and H.263 are standards for compression of video data. The problem is that encoding and decoding algorithms are computationally intensive and complexity increases with the size of the video. In mobile applications, processing capabilities such as memory space and calculation time are limited and optimized algorithms for decoding and encoding are necessary. The question is if it is possible to encode raw video data with low complexity. Single frames e.g. from a digital camera, can then be coded and transmitted as a video sequence. On the other hand, the decoder needs to be able to handle sequences with different resolution. Thus, decoder in new mobile terminals must decode higher resolution sequences with the same complexity as low resolution video requires. The work will involve literature studies of MPEG-4 and H.263. The goal is to investigate the possibility to encode video data with low complexity and to find a way for optimized downscaling of larger sequences in a decoder. The work should include - Literature studies of MPEG-4 and H.263. - Theoretical study how CIF sequences (352x288-pixel) can be downscaled to QCIF (176x144-pixel) size. - Finding of optimized algorithms for a low complexity encoder. - Implementation of such an encoder in a microprocessor, e.g. a DSP. - Complexity analysis of processing consumption. Prerequisite experience is fair C-programming, signalprocessing skills and basic knowledge in H.263 and MPEG-4 is useful. New mobile communication standards provide an increased bandwidth, which opens up for many new media applications and services in future mobile phones. Video compression is a critical component of many of the available multimedia applications, it is necessary for storage or transmission of digital video over today's band-limited networks. The majority of this video is coded using international standards developed in collaboration with ITU-T Study Group and MPEG. The MPEG family of video coding standards begun on the early 1990s with MPEG-1, developed for video and audio storage on CD-ROMs, with support for progressive video. MPEG-2 was standardized in 1995 for applications of video on DVD, standard and high definition television, with support for interlaced and progressive video. MPEG-4 part 2, also known as MPEG-2 video, was standardized in 1999 for applications of low- bit rate multimedia on mobile platforms and the Internet, with the support of object-based or content based coding by modeling the scene as background and foreground. Since MPEG-1, the main video coding standards were based on the so-called macroblocks. However, research groups continued the work beyond the traditional video coding architectures and found that macroblocks could limit the performance of the compression when using high-resolution video. Therefore, in 2013 the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) also known and H.265, was released, with a structure similar to H.264/AVC but using coding units with more flexible partitions than the traditional macroblocks. HEVC has greater flexibility in prediction modes and transform block sizes, also it has a more sophisticated interpolation and de blocking filters. In 2006 the VC-1 was released. VC-1 is a video codec implemented by Microsoft and the Microsoft Windows Media Video (VMW) 9 and standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). In 2017 the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) released a call for proposals for a new video coding standard initially called Beyond the HEVC, Future Video Coding (FVC) or known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC). VVC is being built on top of HEVC for application on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR), High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 360° Video. The VVC is planned to be finalized by 2020. Mobile devices offer unique characteristics that can be exploited for optimizing video codecs. The combination of small display size, video resolution, and human vision factors, such as acuity, allow encoder optimizations that will not (or minimally) impact subjective quality. The focus of this dissertation is optimizing video services in mobile environments. Industry has begun migrating from H.264 video coding to a more resource intensive but compression efficient High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). However, vi there has been no proper evaluation and optimization of HEVC for mobile environments. Subjective quality evaluations were performed to assess relative quality between H.264 and HEVC. This will allow for better use of device resources and migration to new codecs where it is most useful. Complexity of HEVC is a significant barrier to adoption on mobile devices and complexity reduction methods are necessary. Optimal use of encoding options is needed to maximize quality and compression while minimizing encoding time. Methods for optimizing coding mode selection for HEVC were developed. Complexity of HEVC encoding can be further reduced by exploiting the mismatch between the resolution of the video, resolution of the mobile display, and the ability of the human eyes to acquire and process video under these conditions. The perceptual optimizations developed in this dissertation use the properties of spatial (visual acuity) and temporal information processing (motion perception) to reduce the complexity of HEVC encoding. A unique feature of the proposed methods is that they reduce encoding complexity and encoding time. The proposed HEVC encoder optimization methods reduced encoding time by 21.7% and bitrate by 13.4% with insignificant impact on subjective quality evaluations. These methods can easily be implemented today within HEVC.

It has close to 50% reduction in encoding time compared to its predecessor, H.264 or AVC [37] (Advanced Video Coding) at the cost of increased complexity. Lot of research is going towards reducing the complexity of this codec, at the same time, maintaining the visual quality that it produces and maintaining the reduced encoding time from its predecessor. As an effort to decrease the encoding time further, there can be several approaches. Parallel processing is taking a dominant role in many places, especially in Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and multi-cored processor based applications. Because of the ability of the parallel programming to utilize the multiple cores efficiently at the same time, in place of serial programming, this has been used in many applications which demand quicker completion. If areas that are parallelizable are identified in any codec [38] (HEVC in this case), the encoding time can be drastically reduced by writing an efficient algorithm. In parallel programming, it is very important that the parallelized portion has the least amount of dependencies; otherwise it will lead to reverse effects of what is actually expected. Thus, the success lies in identifying the region of the codec that contributes more towards encoding time and that has least dependencies, and optimizing that portion of the codec. In this thesis, thorough analysis is done to identify the hot spots in the codec implementation, HM16.7, of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) developed by the JCTVC team. This hotspot analysis is implemented using Intel's most powerful tool, Intel® vTune Amplifier. The results of this hotspot analysis will be functions and loops that use most of the CPU time. Once this is identified, the respective function is targeted to be optimized using Parallel programming with OpenMP. Iterative runs are carried out on the modified code to check whether the code has been reasonably optimized. The final optimized code is tested for encoding videos using metrics such as PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), R-D plot (Rate Distortion) and computational complexity in terms of encoding time. Through optimization of the HEVC HM16.7 encoder, there is an average reduction of ~24.7% to ~42.3% in encoding time with ~3.5 to 7% PSNR gain and ~1.6% to 4% bitrate increase.

The calculations involving the derivation of motion estimation followed by predictor picture derivation leading to a residual image which is in turn followed by motion compensation using the previously encoded motion information is responsible for consuming a large part of the encoding time and device resource. Since the video signal largely consists of real world objects which have regions of homogeneous motion, the encoder tries to make use of these regions of common motion to bring about a reduction in bitrate. To achieve this reduction the encoder adapts the technique of motion merging which exploit the redundancies among the motion information data obtained through motion estimation. Although the present algorithm used in HEVC is capable of making use of these redundancies they still impose a large computational and encoding time overhead on the codecs affecting the device performance. The thesis proposes an algorithm which selectively performs the motion merging allowing the formation of larger blocks of homogenous motion which reduces the bitrate and also utilizes the typical characteristics of video signal to reduce the encoding time at a cost of little loss of quality. The experimental results based on the proposed algorithm on several test sequences suggest a reduction in encoding time by 14-24%, reduction in bitrate by 2-7% at a little loss of quality by 2-6%. Metrics such as BD-PSNR (Bjontegaard Delta Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), BD-bitrate (Bjontegaard Delta bitrate) are used.

In this thesis, a technique is proposed to reduce the complexity of HEVC intra coding to get better encoding time, involving two steps - first by optimizing the PU (prediction unit) size decision process using texture complexity analysis by intensity gradients and second to obtain the reduced prediction modes by applying a combination of rough mode decision (RMD) and most probable modes (MPM) thereby reducing the number of modes based on rate distortion optimization (RDO) followed by residual quad-tree (RQT) which is used to simplify the entire process The technique developed in this thesis achieved an average gain of 47.25% encoder time when implemented for several test sequences at very less loss in performance with high complexity reduction.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores perceptual optimization and complexity reduction towards improving video compression schemes in a real-time encoding framework context. Different strategies are proposed to address perceptual enhancements and complexity reduction. The work is divided into three main parts that tackle several aspects to improve real-time video encoding. The first contribution introduces a perceptual pre-processing filter based on a model of the Human Visual System. This preprocessing filter can be tuned and has been optimized for multiple viewing conditions. An investigation of different objective quality metric's accuracy in measuring the performance of pre-processing is also reported. The second part of the thesis proposes a machine learning classification-based methodology to adaptively predict and select the best encoding resolution in a single-pass encoding scenario. For this purpose, three different classifiers have been considered: Support Vector Machine, Random Forest (RF), and Multi-Layer Perceptron. Several objective quality metrics have been characterized and benchmarked for various quality ranges concerning the uncertainty of subjective quality ground-truth to evaluate and drive the perceptual gain at a given bitrate. Also, a new, subjectively more accurate RFbased fusion metric has been introduced for ground truth dataset annotation of classifiers. The final part focuses on tackling the most challenging encoding part of the new Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard: the Multi-Type Tree partitioning decision. A new ML-based partitioning decision criteria is proposed covering all standard partitioning possibilities for both intra and inter, especially suitable for realtime hardware encoder. A CNN-based approach was considered, offering classifiers for different coding unit depth, shapes, and picture types.

Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates video encoding schemes for pervasive computing applications that must ensure low power consumption in addition to high compression efficiency. The contribution of the dissertation is the formulation of a theoretical problem that captures the joint optimization of power and distortion in video coding. The study of the complexity distribution of typical video encoders helps to develop a complexity-scalable video encoding architecture that includes several control parameters to adjust the power consumption of the major modules of the encoder. An analytic framework to model, control and optimize the power-rate-distortion is developed, which facilitates the development of optimization schemes to determine the best configuration of the complexity control parameters according to either or both the power supply level of the device and the video presentation quality. The dissertation proposes complexity control schemes that dynamically adjust the control parameters. Using extensive simulations on an instruction set simulator, the accuracy of the model, and quality of the optimization schemes are investigated. For additional performance improvement, we propose algorithms that exploit the video content to reduce the power consumption and improve the video quality. This is done by obtaining and maintaining the "motion history" of a video sequence in a hierarchical fashion. By adaptively adjusting the complexity parameters according to the motion history information gained from the video sequence, the power is saved when the scene has little motion and consumed when the motion activity increases. Extensive experiments have been performed to show the validity and merits of the proposed techniques.
