Book excerpt: The Workshop Heterostructure Epitaxy and Devices HEAD'97 was held from October 12 to 16, 1997 at Smolenice Castle, the House of Scientists of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and was co-organized by the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava and the Institute of Thin Film and Ion Technology, Research Centre, liilich. It was the third in a series of workshops devoted to topics related to heterostructure epitaxy and devices and the second included into the category of Advanced Research Workshops (ARW) under sponsorship of the NATO. More than 70 participants from 15 countries attended (Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the USA). Novel microelectronic and optoelectronic devices are based on semiconductor heterostructures. The goal of the ARW HEAD'97 was to discuss various questions related to the use of new materials (e.g. compound semiconductors based on high band-gap nitrides and low band-gap antimonides) and new procedures (low-temperature epitaxial growth), as well as new principles (nanostructures, quantum wires and dots, etc.) aimed at realizing high-performance heterostructure based electronic devices. Almost 70 papers (invited and contributed oral presentations as well as posters) were presented at the ARW HEAD'97 and the main part of them is included into these Proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a uniform and comprehensive manner the authors describe all the important aspects of the epitaxial growth processes of solid films on crystalline substrates, e.g. processes in which atoms of the growing film mimic the arrangement of the atoms of the substrate. Emphasis is put on sufficiently fundamental and unequivocal presentation of the subject in the form of an easy-to-read review. A large part of this book focuses on the problems of heteroepitaxy. The most important epitaxial growth techniques which are currently widely used in basic research as well as in manufacturing processes of devices are presented and discussed in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Epitaxy provides the essential information for a comprehensive upper-level graduate course treating the crystalline growth of semiconductor heterostructures. Heteroepitaxy represents the basis of advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices today and is considered one of the top fields in materials research. The book covers the structural and electronic properties of strained epitaxial layers, the thermodynamics and kinetics of layer growth, and the description of the major growth techniques metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, molecular beam epitaxy and liquid phase epitaxy. Cubic semiconductors, strain relaxation by misfit dislocations, strain and confinement effects on electronic states, surface structures and processes during nucleation and growth are treated in detail. The Introduction to Epitaxy requires only little knowledge on solid-state physics. Students of natural sciences, materials science and electrical engineering as well as their lecturers benefit from elementary introductions to theory and practice of epitaxial growth, supported by pertinent references and over 200 detailed illustrations.

Book excerpt: Blackmailed! Wrongly discredited as a space pilot, Panglor Balef is doomed to die in space, if sheer luck doesn’t bring him through. But luck has never been in Panglor’s cards. Bad enough to be coerced into a mission of murder and suicide, he must also contend with Alo—a young woman, stowaway, and impossible companion. Neither of them, nor his empathic ou-ralot, could possibly anticipate the journey through space-time they are about to embark on, through a door to an insane reality from which there is almost certainly no return. It could be the discovery of the millennium, but the only way home is to journey even further into the heart of madness. The stunning prequel to the famed Star Rigger Universe of Jeffrey A. Carver, Nebula-nominated author of Eternity’s End and The Chaos Chronicles. REVIEWS: “An original and very charming novel, with a particularly unusual protagonist.” —Publishers Weekly “Panglor is an interesting and different novel... a fun read.” —Future Life REVIEWS OF OTHER WORKS BY JEFFREY A. CARVER: “Masterfully captures the joy of exploration.” —Publishers Weekly “Jeffrey Carver imagines wonders and allows us to share his vision.” —Terry Carr, editor of Universe and numerous “Best of the Year” anthologies “What is evident in Carver’s work is a wonderful ability to deal sensitively with the interrelationships of characters and their environments.” —Galileo Magazine “Carver writes powerfully and clearly and has produced a book that is likely to find an audience among hard SF readers.” —Booklist “Carver is a strong SF writer, with a good feel for both the hard SF elements and the people he populates them with.” —Amazing Stories

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Beam Epitaxy (CBE), is a powerful growth technique which has come to prominence over the last ten years. Together with the longer established molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE), CBE provides a capability for the epitaxial growth of semiconductor and other advanced materials with control at the atomic limit. This, the first book dedicated to CBE, and closely related techniques comprises chapters by leading research workers in the field and provides a detailed overview of the state-of-the-art in this area of semiconductor technology. Topics covered include equipment design and safety considerations, design of chemical precursors, surface chemistry and growth mechanisms, materials and devices from arsenide, phosphide, antimonide, silicon and II-VI compounds, doping, selected area epitaxy and etching. The volume provides an introduction for those new to the field and a detailed summary for experienced researchers.
