Book excerpt: In his Histories, Herodotus of Halicarnassus gave an account of Xerxes’ invasion of Greece (480 BCE). Among the information in this work features a rich topography of the places visited by the army, as well as of the battlefields. Apparently there existed a certain demand among the Greeks to behold the exact places where they believed that the Greeks had fallen, gods had appeared, or Xerxes had watched over his men. This book argues that Herodotus’ topography, long taken at face value as if it provided unambiguous access to the historical sites of the war, may partly be a product of Greek imagination in the approximately fifty years between the Xerxes’ invasion and its publication, with the landscape functioning as a catalyst. This innovative approach leads to a new understanding of the topography of the invasion, and of the ways in which Greeks in the late fifth century BCE understood the world around them. It also prompts new suggestions about the real-world locations of various places mentioned in Herodotus’ text.

Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Histories of Herodotus is now considered the founding work of history in Western literature. Written in 440 BC in the Ionic dialect of classical Greek, The Histories serves as a record of the ancient traditions, politics, geography, and clashes of various cultures that were known in Western Asia, Northern Africa and Greece at that time. The Histories also stands as one of the first accounts of the rise of the Persian Empire, as well as the events and causes of the Greco-Persian Wars between the Achaemenid Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. The Histories was at some point divided into the nine books that appear in modern editions, conventionally named after the nine Muses.

Comprising multiple volumes, this monumental text is considered one of the earliest examples of historical writing and serves as a primary source for understanding the ancient world. In Volume I of "The History of Herodotus," the historian delves into the origins and events leading up to the Greco-Persian Wars, particularly focusing on the conflict between the Greek city-states and the mighty Persian Empire. Herodotus meticulously recounts the rise of the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great, its expansion under Darius I, and the subsequent Persian invasions of Greece. Through his narrative, Herodotus not only chronicles the military campaigns and political machinations of the era but also provides insights into the cultures, customs, and beliefs of the peoples involved. His accounts include vivid descriptions of battles, diplomatic negotiations, and legendary anecdotes, all of which contribute to a rich tapestry of ancient history.

Book excerpt: Greece and Rome: Texts and Contexts provides students with direct access to the ancient world by offering new translations of extracts from the key texts of its literature, history and civilization, and by setting them in their historical, social and cultural contexts. The series is suitable for both advanced secondary school and undergraduate study, giving translations that are accurate and accessible, accompanied by notes that will enable all students to engage with the primary sources. Key features of the series include: questions which prompt students to develop their own informed opinions, and to consider the relevance of ancient texts to the modern world notes alongside the texts for easy reference stimulating illustrations throughout. Herodotus, writing in the second half of the 5th century BC, is the first historian of western civilization. His narrative tells of the expansion of the Persian Empire in the 6th and 5th centuries BC and the wars between Greece and Persia in 490, 480 and 479 BC. Some of the most famous battles of history Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis - are dramatically described in his work. However, Herodotus' greatness lies not only in the momentous nature of the events he describes. His purpose is to explain why the wars happened, and his sophisticated and complex answer encompasses the relation of gods to men, the nature of different peoples and the character of individuals. Herodotus says that he will write equally about the two sides of the war, and his narrative of the clash between East and West, between democracy and autocracy, has striking and disturbing modern resonances.
