Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry for the Craftsman Many writers give the Crusades, 1096 - 1270, as the beginning of the science of heraldry. During these enterprises great changes took place in the weapons and armours used. These changes and the various forms of crosses that were adopted (see chapter V) without doubt had their in uence on the heraldry of a later date. Yet the only relation that any of these may claim to heraldry is that they were symbolical devices carried by warriors to distinguish one group from another they were in no sense a shield of arms, as they possessed no hereditary character. Although there are depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry, illustrating the Norman conquest, knights with banners and shields charged with various emblems, most authorities agree that at this period no form of heraldic science existed; indeed, it was not until the second half of the twelfth century that coats of arms, as we know them, came into being; and it was not until the thirteenth century that they were governed by a code of rules and the Science of Heraldry definitely established. At this period heraldry held such a place in the hearts of the popu lace that even those oi little education were well acquainted with its language and meaning, they, having so to speak, grown up together. In presenting the eighteenth to the Public, it is only necessary to say, that in order to secure a continuance of such popularity, the book has undergone complete revision; and by the omission of some exploded theories, and the correction of a few erroneous Opinions, been rendered, it is hoped, a still more trustworthy Hand-book to an Art as useful as it is ornamental - to a Science, the real value of which is daily becoming more apparent in this age of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Guide to Heraldry, Vol. 1 The second point, which perhaps is the most important, is the patent fact that Heraldry and Armory are not a dead science, but are an actual living reality. Armory may be a quaint survival of a time with different manners and customs, and different ideas from our own, but the word Finis has not yet been written to the science, which is still slowly developing and altering and changing as it is suited to the altered manners and customs of the present day. I doubt not that this view will be a startling one to many who look upon Armory as indissolubly associated with parchments and writings already musty with age. But so long as the Sovereign has the power to create a new order of Knighthood, and attach thereto Heraldic insignia, so long as the Crown has the power to create'a new coronet, or to order a new ceremonial, so long as new coats of arms are being called into being, - for so long is it idle to treat Armory and Heraldry as a science incapable of further development, or as a science which in recent periods has not altered in its laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Introduction to Heraldry A knowledge of Heraldry has been at all times reckoned among the accomplishments of a gentleman, and considered to form at least a graceful, if not a useful adjunct, in every system of liberal education. In the present day, however, when everything which is calculated to throw light upon the customs and habits of thought of our ancestors during the period of the middle ages is sought for with avidity, it has especial claims upon our notice. If History be indebted for its true exposition to the labours of the antiquary, so is the antiq indebted to the herald for many of the facts which illustrate his narra tive; in marshalling before our view the stirring events of feudal times, the picture which represents the knight would be incomplete without that of the attendant herald, whose duty it was to blazon his arms and give proof of his descent. Nor was the presence of the latter less neces sary in the palace of the sovereign, to arrange the pageantry of princes; or in the battle field of the warrior, to apply the knowledge of his art in the melancholy task of reckon ing the number of the noble dead, and by his sad inventory of their rank, to measure the amount and import of the victory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pimbley's Dictionary of Heraldry, Together With: Illustrated Supplement The author has attempted to trace the etymological history of each word, and when this proved futile the form of orthography adopted has been that recognized by the College of Arms. It has been said by some writers that there is no standard of pronunciation. The highest authority is the one in vogue, and the author has adopted the current pronunciation for the standard. In the case of compound words, they will be found under the first element of the compound. For example, Arms of Adoption will be found under Arms; counter-mir under Counter, instead of after Counterpointe.
