Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Summer afternoon-summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." In An International Episode, Henry James introduces his readers to his bi-national world of love and nostalgia. Like in many of his novels, the book's main concern is about the interaction and the cultural differences between the Old World and the New World. Two British gentlemen visit the US and meet two beautiful American females who later return the visit in London. In addition to the romantic side of the story, the narrative focuses on social and cultural misunderstandings, faux pas and false friends, which makes the work very close to a comedy of manners. Being torn between his loyalty and love for his mother country and his longing for the European world of tradition and authenticity where he spent most of his life, James's work can be seen as an attempt to highlight the fundamental distinctions that separate the two cultures. Throughout the narrative and right before the sudden and unhelpful closing of the plot, the different characters are stereotypically presented; their manners, their social conventions, hypocrisy and prejudice are ironically highlighted, which makes of An International Episode an authentic reference that offers a balanced overview of British and American cultures and differences around the turn of the century.

Book excerpt: Henry James led a wandering life, which took him far from his native shores, but he continued to think of New York City, where his family had settled for several years during his childhood, as his hometown. Here Colm Tóibín, the author of the Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel The Master, a portrait of Henry James, brings together for the first time all the stories that James set in New York City. Written over the course of James’s career and ranging from the deliciously tart comedy of the early “An International Episode” to the surreal and haunted corridors of “The Jolly Corner,” and including “Washington Square,” the poignant novella considered by many (though not, as it happens, by the author himself) to be one of James’s finest achievements, the nine fictions gathered here reflect James’s varied talents and interests as well as the deep and abiding preoccupations of his imagination. And throughout the book, as Tóibín’s fascinating introduction demonstrates, we see James struggling to make sense of a city in whose rapidly changing outlines he discerned both much that he remembered and held dear as well as everything about America and its future that he dreaded most. Stories included: The Story of a Masterpiece A Most Extraordinary Case Crawford’s Consistency An International Episode The Impressions of a Cousin The Jolly Corner Washington Square Crapy Cornelia A Round of Visits

Book excerpt: Henry James’s Daisy Miller was an immediate sensation when it was first published in 1878 and has remained popular ever since. In this novella, the charming but inscrutable young American of the title shocks European society with her casual indifference to its social mores. The novella was popular in part because of the debates it sparked about foreign travel, the behaviour of women, and cultural clashes between people of different nationalities and social classes. This Broadview edition presents an early version of James’s best-known novella within the cultural contexts of its day. In addition to primary materials about nineteenth-century womanhood, foreign travel, medicine, philosophy, theatre, and art—some of the topics that interested James as he was writing the story—this volume includes James’s ruminations on fiction, theatre, and writing, and presents excerpts of Daisy Miller as he rewrote it for the theatre and for a much later and heavily revised edition.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistik II (American Studies)), course: The Tales of Henry James, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Among the central motifs that can be traced throughout Henry James's career as a writer is his concern with the social and moral differences between the New World and Europe (mainly represented by England, Italy and France), which he called the "Americano-European legend" and is otherwise frequently referred to as the "international theme". It reflects the mutual misunderstandings of Americans and Europeans, often by following the same basic pattern, i.e. the innocent and naive American girl who journeys to the Old Country and encounters a corrupt, mostly rigid set of values which its advocates attempt to subjugate her to. Usually the heroine struggles to protect her integrity, her individualism and personal freedom against a society that strikes her as oppressive, anti-democratic or, as is the case with Madame de Mauves, as immoral, and undergoes a changing process in which she abandons her romantic vision and nostalgic longing for a quaint and picturesque Europe. Although in his exploration of the international conflict 'innocence' is invariably associated with the American side, whereas 'knowledge' is mostly to be found on the European, the satire and irony in the study of national characters is aimed at both. Sometimes showing sympathy for the helpless American outsider abroad, who is not at all prepared to deal with the complexity of cultural life in Europe, James at other times sympathizes with the European facing the uncultivated, socially ignorant and traditionless American (of which Daisy Miller's mother seems to be the representative model), thus giving us an all in all tremendously balanced and superb portrayal of the idiosyncratic manners of both sides of the Atlantic. I have selected three earl

Book excerpt: By turns chilling, funny, tragic, and profound, this collection of six Henry James short novels allows readers to experience the full range of his skills and vision. The title story, “The Turn of the Screw,” is a chilling masterpiece of psychological terror that mixes the phantoms of the mind with those of the supernatural. “Daisy Miller,” the tale of a provincial American girl in Rome that established James’s literary reputation, and “An International Episode” are superb examples of his focus on the clash between American and European values. And in “The Aspern Papers,” “The Alter of the Dead,” and “The Beast in the Jungle,” the author’s remarkable sense of irony, his love of plot twists, and his view of male-female relationships find exquisite expression. With an Introduction by Fred Kaplan
