Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Mexico's state archives offer a rich collection of documents from the Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial periods. Robert J. Tórrez has mined this collection to produce a series of thirty-six articles that give us an idea of the stark reality of everyday life: what ordinary people went through to feed and protect their families, keep warm, worship their God, deal with government bureaucracies, and enjoy a few of life's pleasures. Previously published in periodicals with small local circulation, these essays are now available to the broader audience they deserve. The essays are divided into five groups. Part 1, "Glimpses of Daily Life," includes such topics as arranged marriages, conflicts over taxes and water, and weaving in New Mexico. Part 2, "Indian Relations," shows us visits and battles with Navajo, Ute, and Pueblo people. Part 3, on "Crime and Punishment," comprises essays on hangings, poisonings, and outlaws. "The Territorial Topics" gathered in Part 4 is a mélange of entertainment, travel, and government matters, from the oddity of "UFOs over Galisteo," in which a Chinese balloon seems to have made its way to New Mexico in 1880, to the arrival of stagecoaches, telegraphs, and a circus. Part 5 presents biographical sketches of seven famous and not-so-famous New Mexicans. "In an extraordinary case from 1744, Juana Martín, the wife of Joseph de Armijo, accused him of carrying on an affair with Getrudes de Segura. When the investigation was concluded, the offending couple was found guilty and Getrudes sentenced to exile at El Paso del Norte for four years. Armijo was allowed to remain in Santa Fe, but was assessed the expenses of Getrudes's trip to El Paso. The formal sentence pointed out Armijo's failure to live up to his responsibilities as a husband and ordered him to live amicably with his wife during Getrudes's period of exile."--from UFOs Over Galisteo and Other Stories of New Mexico's History

Book excerpt: "Buried Treasure" is a story about rivalry and love, greed and trust, friends and enemies. Jim and Goodloe Banks fight for the love of May Mangum. Although they seem to be evil adversaries, they spend much of their time together trying to obtain even more details about her and her interests. Their plans however change when May disappears all of a sudden. Their love rival turns to a search mission. Is May the treasure they are not willing to let go? Will they unite in the name of the woman they love? Will they get the future they have longed for or they will be left with the bitter feeling of failure? William Sydney Porter, better known as O. Henry, was an American writer who lived in the late 19th century. He gains wide popularity with his short stories which often take place either in New York or some small American towns. The plot twists and the surprise endings are a typical and integral part of O. Henry’s short stories. Some of his best known works are "The Gift of the Magi", "The Cop and the Anthem", "A Retrieved Reformation". His stories often deal with ordinary people and the individual aspects of life. As a result of the outstanding literature legacy that O. Henry left behind, there is an American annual award after his name, given to exceptional short stories.

Barber returns to the beginning of the Neighborly Affection series with a collection of short stories from a different perspective. Finally, readers of the Neighborly Affection series get the other side of the story... Jay Kress knows his lover is into the girl next door. As a polyamorous bisexual guy, he's cool with that. And he's pretty sure the gal is into Henry, too, if their explosive dinner party is any clue. But now he'll have to tackle a submissive's toughest job: getting his lovers to make the leap from occasional sex to the permanent triad relationship he knows they deserve. Their hearts are made for each other--and the sexual perks ain't bad, either. With an overcautious dominant on one side and a newcomer to the lifestyle on the other, Jay knows he has to tread lightly, but he can't help pushing for more. Can he bring Henry and Alice together before their fear of losing each other dooms them all? New to USA Today bestselling author M.Q. Barber’s Neighborly Affection series? This friends-to-lovers bisexual menage romance saga is best read in order. Dominance and submission is the name of the game for this MMF poly triad. Start with Playing the Game or the prequel book Becoming His Master. Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories returns to the beginning of the Neighborly Affection series to fill in the blanks from another perspective. It is a full-length collection of 103,000 words in more than 40 stories. Read Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories side by side with Playing the Game and Crossing the Lines to see the bigger picture of how Henry, Alice, and Jay found their forever love. Praise for Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: “As always, the writing is superb and well researched. One of the things I love most about M. Q. Barber’s books is that I feel like I’m entering a whole new world and that over the course of the book or series, I become so comfortable and familiar that I never want to leave.” — BookBub reviewer, 5 stars “Like the other books in the series, this one is steamy! Just the right amount though, balanced with excellent character creation, realistic situations and real human emotions. … I’m also so thankful that the themes of polyamory, dominance and submission, love and emotional equanimity are treated so responsibly while still making it an enjoyable and downright fun read.” — BookBub reviewer, 5 stars “I started reading and was intrigued from the start. I read the full length book, cover to cover, in one sitting. I mean who needs sleep.” — BookBub reviewer, 5 stars “I can’t think of another author who does a better job of developing real, powerful, and emotionally complex characters who love, fear and grow in her stories. … [Tuesdays with Jay is] like pulling back a curtain and seeing an even more beautiful view into the loving, passionate, accepting, and devoted world of Henry, Alice and Jay.” — BookBub reviewer Praise for the Neighborly Affection series: “I love ménage stories, but Barber is beginning to ruin me for other authors. Her characters show such depth and her relationships are so complex and rewarding that I’m beginning to hold others to her standard.” — You Gotta Read Reviews on Healing the Wounds: Neighborly Affection Book 3 “The Neighborly Affection series as a whole has opened my eyes and has made me view the BDSM lifestyle in a new and refreshing light.” — Bookaholics Not-So-Anonymous blog “The three lovers define the ups and downs of a polyamorous triad and leave the ending open for future adventures. … Barber frames a sexy, loving relationship that happens to be among three people. Libraries looking for more ménage works might consider purchasing all three [books in the series].” — Library Journal on the Neighborly Affection series

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it may be difficult to believe, the eleven stories in this collection are based in truth. Author Jeremy Sayers hails from a family of adventurers and farmers. His father's family came to America in 1715 and settled in Virginia. His mother's family arrived much later, immigrants and migrants. All together, these people were coal miners, blacksmiths, and cowboys. Most of all, they were believers in whatever it was that let them survive one sunrise to another. And they were storytellers. Fencline and Other Stories brings some of those tales to life. Like the myths of ancient cultures, the Greeks, Hindus, Hebrews, and Native Americans, these stories tell about a particular time and place. But, they also contain something timeless. These stories give us reasons to laugh and to mourn. And the characters in these tales teach us something about coping with strife as we share little parts of their lives.

Book excerpt: Depictions of the undead in the American South are not limited to our modern versions, such as the vampires in True Blood and the zombies in The Walking Dead. As Undead Souths reveals, physical emanations of southern undeadness are legion, but undeadness also appears in symbolic, psychological, and cultural forms, including the social death endured by enslaved people, the Cult of the Lost Cause that resurrected the fallen heroes of the Confederacy as secular saints, and mourning rites revived by Native Americans forcibly removed from the American Southeast. To capture the manifold forms of southern haunting and horror, Undead Souths explores a variety of media and historical periods, establishes cultural crossings between the South and other regions within and outside of the U.S., and employs diverse theoretical and critical approaches. The result is an engaging and inclusive collection that chronicles the enduring connection between southern culture and the refusal of the dead to stay dead.

Book excerpt: The eighteen pieces collected in Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories bring together the many and subtle voices of Ethel Wilson, demonstrating her extraordinary range as a writer. From the gentle mockery of the title story to the absurdist reportage of “Mr. Sleepwalker,” Wilson exerts unerring narrative control. Revealing what is “simple and complicated and timeless” in everyday life, these stories also venture into irrational realms of experience where chance encounters assume a malevolent form and coincidence transmuted into nightmare. First published in 1961, Mrs. Golightly and Other Stories is a diverse and rewarding collection, unified by Ethel Wilson’s distinct and engaging wit.

But by the end of each day we’re often left wondering if any of it really mattered. We feel the ticking of the clock, but we’re unsure of the path forward. Die Empty is a tool for people who aren’t willing to put off their most important work for another day. Todd Henry explains the forces that lead to stagnation and introduces practices that will keep you on a true and steady course. Henry shows how to sustain your enthusiasm, push through mental barriers, and unleash your best work each day.
