Book Synopsis Henry Fielding by : Thomas R. Cleary
Download or read book Henry Fielding written by Thomas R. Cleary and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate and comprehensive study of the political aspects of Fielding’s art has been sorely needed. As a result of decades of work by literary scholars and a series of great historians, such a study is finally possible. This volume addresses that need, and, in the light of a recent revival of interest in Fielding’s work, it arrives most opportunely. The author offers here a wide-ranging focus and a firm grip on the shifting complexities of Fielding’s political situations—the loyalties and enmities, factional alignments and fractious rhetoric—that allow a satisfactory understanding of Fielding’s political writing. Political writing in Fielding’s day, as in ours, was topical, concerned with evanescent problems and day-to-day needs that were familiar to contemporaries, but that are now recaptured only with greatest difficulty. This study constitutes a thorough reconstruction of Fielding’s political context and extricates from the context Fielding’s own political endeavours. Cleary’s work will make many of Felding’s previously unstudied work accessible to students and scholars of eighteenth-century English literature. A necessary point of reference to both literary specialists and historians concerned with eighteenth-century England.

Download or read book Henry Fielding In Our Time written by J. A. Downie and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fielding In Our Time publishes many of the papers presented at the international conference held at the University of London 19-21 April 2007 to commemorate the tercentenary of his birth. Written by established scholars, including the acknowledged doyen of Fielding scholars, Martin C. Battestin of the University of Virginia, as well as younger scholars who successfully bring their recent research to bear on neglected areas of Fielding’s life and works, the essays offer a cross-section of current approaches to Fielding and his writings, from his ballad operas, poetry and political journalism , via Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones and Amelia—the novels for which he is still best known—to the social pamphlets written during his years at Bow Street as magistrate for Westminster and Middlesex. The collection should appeal both to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academics and general readers interested in the eighteenth-century in general, and Fielding’s contribution to the emergence and development of the novel form in particular.

Book excerpt: Henry Fielding has been much quoted and imitated, but for sound philosophy, piquancy of style and accuracy in portraying human nature in all its phases he has never been outshone by any of his pupils or successors. As one of the first proponents of the English novel he set a standard in prose, like Milton and Shakespeare in poetry, that has never been excelled, and rarely equalled, by moderns. Later writers have no more improved upon his style than modern poets have improved upon Shakespeare's.

Book Synopsis Contributions to The Champion and Related Writings by : Henry Fielding
Download or read book Contributions to The Champion and Related Writings written by Henry Fielding and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume completes the edition's coverage of Henry Fielding's journalism, which occupied a far greater part of his time than has been traditionally acknowledged. His contributions to The Champion are not only among his most energetic and intriguing works in the genre; they also have a densepolitical background, of interest to historians studying the interface between journalism and politicians of the time, as well as the role of newspaper publishers. Walpole figures hugely, and the extent to which Fielding hints at the minister's life and activities is remarkable.Much of the volume's material has never been reprinted before. Explanatory annotations are full, as the characteristically allusive and topical nature of Fielding's writing requires. Appendices provide an analytical textual apparatus, and the editorial introductions emphasize matters such as genesisand composition, circumstances of publication, in addition to immediate biographical, literary, and historical backgrounds.

Book Synopsis Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding by : Jennifer Preston Wilson
Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding written by Jennifer Preston Wilson and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Henry Fielding, though written nearly three hundred years ago, retain their sense of comedy and innovation in the face of tradition, and they easily engage the twenty-first-century student with many aspects of eighteenth-century life: travel, inns, masquerades, political and religious factions, the '45, prisons and the legal system, gender ideals and realities, social class. Part 1 of this volume, "Materials," discusses the available editions of Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones, Shamela, Jonathan Wild, and Amelia; suggests useful critical and contextual works for teaching them; and recommends helpful audiovisual and electronic resources. The essays of part 2, "Approaches," demonstrate that many of the methods and models used for one novel--the romance tradition, Fielding's legal and journalistic writing, his techniques as a playwright, the ideas of Machiavelli--can be adapted to others.
