Book excerpt: Based on three years of ethnographic research in the Yukon, this book examines contemporary efforts to restructure the relationship between aboriginal peoples and the state in Canada. Although it is widely held that land claims and co-management – two of the most visible and celebrated elements of this restructuring – will help reverse centuries of inequity, this book challenges this conventional wisdom, arguing that land claims and co-management may be less empowering for First Nation peoples than is often supposed. The book examines the complex relationship between the people of Kluane First Nation, the land and animals, and the state. It shows that Kluane human-animal relations are at least partially incompatible with Euro-Canadian notions of “property” and “knowledge.” Yet, these concepts form the conceptual basis for land claims and co-management, respectively. As a result, these processes necessarily end up taking for granted – and so helping to reproduce – existing power relations. First Nation peoples’ participation in land claim negotiations and co-management have forced them – at least in some contexts – to adopt Euro-Canadian perspectives toward the land and animals. They have been forced to develop bureaucratic infrastructures for interfacing with the state, and they have had to become bureaucrats themselves, learning to speak and act in uncharacteristic ways. Thus, land claims and co-management have helped undermine the very way of life they are supposed to be protecting. This book speaks to critical issues in contemporary anthropology, First Nation law, and resource management. It moves beyond conventional models of colonialism, in which the state is treated as a monolithic entity, and instead explores how “state power” is reproduced through everyday bureaucratic practices – including struggles over the production and use of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rex Forrester's two great New Zealand hunting classics are to appear for the first time in a single volume. It is the story of the chopper boys, the men whose sweat, skill and heroism provided the foundation for the now-thriving deer-farming industry. Working in dangerous conditions in New Zealand's remote back country, these men risked serious injury, even death, for the adventure of it all - as well as sometimes for serious financial gain. Forrester's stories range from the 'meat hawk wars', poaching, and the transition from slaughter to live capture to the development of the net gun. Packed with yarns, jokes and close calls, this is essential reading for hunters and armchair-adventurers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a teacher begin to appreciate and tap the rich creative resources of the fantasy world of children? What social functions do story playing and storytelling serve in the preschool classroom? And how can the child who is trapped in private fantasies be brought into the richly imaginative social play that surrounds him? The Boy Who Would Be a Helicopter focuses on the challenge posed by the isolated child to teachers and classmates alike in the unique community of the classroom. It is the dramatic story of Jason-the loner and outsider-and of his ultimate triumph and homecoming into the society of his classmates. As we follow Jason's struggle, we see that the classroom is indeed the crucible within which the young discover themselves and learn to confront new problems in their daily experience. Vivian Paley recreates the stage upon which children emerge as natural and ingenious storytellers. She supplements these real-life vignettes with brilliant insights into the teaching process, offering detailed discussions about control, authority, and the misuse of punishment in the preschool classroom. She shows a more effective and natural dynamic of limit-setting that emerges in the control children exert over their own fantasies. And here for the first time the author introduces a triumvirate of teachers (Paley herself and two apprentices) who reflect on the meaning of events unfolding before them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-live the experiences of the people who traveled to the distant and untouched Mackenzie Mountains of Canada’s Northwest Territories. This raw, beautiful land was opened to outfitting in 1965, when intrepid entrepreneurs carried out exploratory hunts by horse and backpack to determine whether the Mackenzies were worth an outfitting investment. Five men initially set out to build their businesses in this remote country, making a living through a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck. Guides, cooks and wranglers contributed to their success in the hunt for Dall sheep, grizzly bears, mountain caribou, mountain goats and moose. Their stories are filled with tales of animal encounters, tragedy and humour. Today, eight outfitters operate in the Mackenzie Mountains as the area remains as remote and beautiful as when the original five outfitters trekked into the area in the 1960’s. I hope you enjoy reading Voices From the Mackenzies as much as I enjoyed writing about the folks who made their living in this beautiful country.

Our heros, Mickey Swift and Marie Sweet team up as Photographer and Investigative Reporter to get a story about a phony Animal Rescue Shelter operating under a Government Tax Exemption Grant. Paul was bound and determined to control her life with the story leads he knew she needed. Unbeknown to Mick; he was standing in Pauls way. The Animal Shelter was privately guarded and well hid behind Cal Con Labs and a National Forest. Cal Con Labs was in its self a clandestine operation. While investigating, they run into some Crazed CEOs who have a passion for slaughtering caged wild animals for their own amusement and Blood Thirsty Business Rituals. Dangers multiply swiftly when Marie is caught off-guard while snooping around. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time in New Zealand's recent past, when every country town, had one or more helicopters based there involved with wild venison recovery to feed a growing export trade. As the wild deer population was reduced and deer farming became widespread, helicopter recovery operations slowly ceased in most locations. Fiordland and South Westland today remain the only areas with full-time venison recovery helicopters still flying. Professional photographer Olivia Page was given the opportunity to record WARO (wild animal recovery operations) in Fiordland over the summer of 2010-2011, the result was 7000 images the best of which are shown in this book, recording an industry which is going through change and may soon be gone forever. A bonus DVD is included, with documentary footage of Dick Deaker and Jeff Carter, on venison recovery missions in Fiordland. Shot by award winning filmmaker Marion Poizeau.
