Book excerpt: The late 1980s saw the dissolution of the Iron Curtain and the development of democracy in Eastern European countries that had been oppressed by a range of varieties of communist totalitarian regimes. In Germany, this development led to the abolition of the so-called German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the re-unification of Germany. Heinz-Uwe Haus was one of the leading voices of the movement credited with being instrumental in the collapse of communism in the GDR. In addition, as a leading theatre director in GDR times and beyond, his thinking and action have always combined politics and theatre and the arts overall. In this book, Haus provides a unique narrative of the context before German unification, unification itself, and the aftermath of unification across the decades since. He explores the difficulties on the way, from the perspective of the insider. Haus then widens the context from post-unification Germany to encompass issues of broader current relevance, such as Europe, America and Islam. Theatre provides the conceptual framework for this wide-ranging debate.

Book excerpt: Heinz-Uwe Haus was the first renowned director from the German Democratic Republic to (be allowed to) direct in the USA. This book presents relevant material written in relation to his productions, specifically of Bertolt Brecht’s plays. This includes Haus’s notes for his casts, announcements of the productions in the media, newspaper reviews and academic articles about the productions, conference contributions, and reflections by cast members (both professional actors and university faculty) and designers (set, costume, light, music). The material on the productions is then discussed in the contexts of approaches to directing, actor training, the academic debate of Brecht in the USA, and historical and biographical dimensions. A conversation with Haus as the final chapter of the book further contextualises the material brought together here.

Book excerpt: This book presents to the reader a selection of the considerable amount of material written and published in relation to Heinz-Uwe Haus's productions of Brecht’s plays and Brechtian productions by other dramatists, especially ancient Greek drama, in Cyprus and Greece since his production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle marked the launch of the Cyprus National Theatre in 1975 after the country’s political turmoil that had culminated in the Turkish invasion. This includes material written by Haus at the time for his cast, announcements of the productions in the media, newspaper reviews and academic articles about the productions, conference contributions, and reflections by cast members (both professional actors and university faculty) and designers (set, costume, light, music). His work in Cyprus and Greece led to further collaborations on productions of ancient Greek plays across the world.

Book excerpt: This collection of documents, political speeches as well as academic articles, by the internationally admired theater director, Heinz-Uwe Haus, reflects positions and actions, which he shared with the majority of the people in his country during the fall of the Wall and the re-unification of the German nation. The reader is reminded of the sheer joy of the peaceful revolution in autumn of 1989. The texts reflect how millions of people reclaimed their basic human freedoms, ending not only the post-WWII division of the country, but de-legitimizing the concept of socialist rule.

Book excerpt: Heinz-Uwe Haus (b. 1942), trained in the former German Democratic Republic as an actor and theatre director, among others as master disciple with some of Brechtâ (TM)s immediate students and collaborators. He directed at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and became the leader of the Academy founded in the GDR to train theatre directors. A passionate opponent of the totalitarian regime, he developed his theatre practice as an active device to provide moral strength, under conditions of dictatorship, for himself, those who worked with him, and those who saw his productions. He was involved politically in the movement that led to the collapse of the GDR. Altogether, the material collected in this book, Hausâ (TM)s own work, as well as commentaries by others from a range of perspectives, should serve not only as a documentation of the work of one major German theatre artist: it should support efforts to alert the present about aspects of the past that are all too easily and conveniently (both for all the wrong reasons), misrepresented, covered or hushed up, brushed aside and in due course forgotten. Theatre for Haus, during GDR times, was a means to survive, not only metaphorically. After liberation, post 1989, post GDR, theatre has lost nothing of its importance, quite the contrary. The book hopes to help understand both.

Book excerpt: Contributions from professors in the humanities, sociology, classics, and the arts provide the book with a broader dimension by taking the topic of a new, united Europe beyond the usually discussed economic and political aspects. The diverse essays show that a united Europe is far more complex than anticipated by the architects of the Maastricht treaty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2014, the University of Delaware’s Resident Ensemble Players staged the first Part of Goethe’s Faust, adapted and directed by Heinz-Uwe Haus, which forms the centrepiece and raison d’être of this book. This book tracks the creative process of Haus’s adaptation of the play and his attempts to elicit responses from his international networks to his question: how is Goethe’s Faust relevant today? It brings together comments from stage and costume designers as they brought their own creativity and understanding of the audience to bear on the play, and presents a brief record of the production itself, through stage directions and the photography of Bill Browning. The book then explores the reactions the production has elicited amongst some of its audience.

Book excerpt: Peter Brook states unequivocally: "Brecht is the key figure of our time, and all theatre work today at some point starts or returns to his statements and achievement." In Beyond Brecht theatre practitioners, film-makes, and scholars assess the work of those who in their own creative work have absorbed Brecht and sought to move beyond him to create theatre, film, and song for the 1980s. From David Bowie's London Baal production to film in Switzerland, to engaged theatre in Calcutta, to the genius of Fo in Italy, the volume moves us beyond a Brecht fit for the museum, to a Brecht full of life for our turbulent time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed book collects 24 interviews that I conducted with German and British theatre artists over the period of 20 years. The first set of interviews focuses on British actors, directors and dramatists involved with Plays about Famous Artists. That section complements the material discussed in my book with CSP, Biographical Plays about Famous Artists. The second set of interviews focuses on German actors and directors involved with boulevard comedy theatre. That section complements the material discussed in my book with CSP, Boulevard Comedy Theatre in Germany. Interviews with two British theatre artists feature in the interviews in Part III: David Ian Rabey combines his job as a professor of Drama and Theatre at the University of Wales Aberystwyth with an active career as a theatre actor, director and dramatist. Mike Pearson is a performance practitioner and professor of Performance Studies in the same university department. The final part of the book provides a range of interviews both from the UK and from Germany, starting off with Sir Richard Eyreâ (TM)s account of his seminal production of Hamlet at the Royal Court in 1980. German Director Heinz-Uwe Haus combines the legacy of Brecht (he trained with some of Brechtâ (TM)s foremost disciples) and politics (Haus lived and worked in the former German Democratic Republicâ "the totalitarian regimeâ (TM)s repression influenced his everyday life and work considerably). Ursula Dinkgräfe, finally, represents both personal legacy and the numerous well-trained and highly capable and successful actors across the world who do not (want to) attain star-status.
