Book excerpt: Mike Disfarmer, an eccentric local recluse, photographed the residents of Heber Springs, Arkansas, in his studio on Main Street in the 1930s and 1940s. His glass-plate negatives were discovered fifteen years after his death. When she first saw an exhibit of Mike Disfarmer's portraits, Toba Tucker was intrigued by their raw honesty. Her curiosity drew her to Heber Springs, where she lived for two years, making portraits of some of the same people Disfarmer photographed and of many of their relatives and descendants who still live there. This unusual book is a rephotographic study. Toba Tucker used Disfarmer's portraits as the starting point for the project, but she brought her own personal vision to the images. She shows how life in small-town America has changed since the 1940s, and how it has remained the same. In his essay, Alan Trachtenberg examines the conversation between then and now, between Disfarmer and Tucker and observes that the strength, the individuality and vitality of the people in both sets of portraits make this book affecting and resonant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this award-winning, coming-of-age novel, ten-year-old Gracie Lee struggles to make sense out of her life as an Arkansas farm girl in the early 1970s. Wise beyond her age yet imbued with child-like innocence, Gracie focuses on the three things that keep her awake at night: Solving the mystery of the man in the gray house; Surviving another school year at Savage Crossing Elementary; and, Saving her alcoholic Daddy from himself (and thereby saving the whole family and wider world). Gracie feels certain there is more to life beyond school and dull church sermons. She worries about the soldiers in Vietnam and wonders what it must be like to have been born Lisa Marie Presley from Tennessee instead of Gracie Lee Abbott from Arkansas. Mostly, she wishes her Daddy wasn't so mean. Gracie's unchecked imagination leads to Nancy Drew-type adventure. Adventure leads to trouble. She confides in unexpected characters and seeks solace in a mysterious gray house beyond the cotton field. When Gracie faces a difficult family situation, she must make a life-altering decision, one that will test the very essence of her character. "At best, most first novels indicate potential. It would be wrong to say that, when reading Talya Tate Boerner's The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee, I was pleasantly surprised. Actually, I was amazed. There's magic here, in a wonderfully-told story that will find a special place in any reader's heart." Jeff Guinn, New York Times bestselling author. "Boerner's prose is a wonderful medium for unspooling Gracie's story, imbued with all the snark, wonder, and colorful details that characterize childhood... The author addresses real, high-stakes issues without slathering them in melodrama or saccharine sentimentality, and her book hearkens back to an older YA tradition of stories of plucky preteen girls, spooky houses, and inevitable tragedies that help mark the turning point from childhood to adolescence. A stirring novel with a distinctive young narrator." Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Talya Boerner thought she had everything figured out. But on New Year's Day 2011, without making a list of pros and cons or giving the idea any real consideration, she invites her ninety-year-old father-in-law to visit. He needs a temporary place to stay. She needs something. Something permanent she can't quite name. From the moment Gene steps into her kitchen, clutching a crumpled paper bag filled with medication and grieving the loss of his independence, nothing unfolds as she expects. With the generational wisdom of Tuesdays with Morrie and the poignancy found in A Man Called Ove, this story is for every adult who wakes in mid-life to discover an unrecognizable reflection in the mirror along with aging parents who need caregiving. A human and humorous life lesson with a heartwarming reminder that an ordinary old man can have an extraordinary impact on those around him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleburne County and Its People is a historical account of Cleburne County and the men and women who made it what it is today. These men and women were as diverse as the Ozark Mountain's rock-laden landscapes. The pioneers who settled Cleburne County were as strong as the land, of hardy pioneer stock, and bold in thought and action. They were shrewd, strong-willed individuals who brought staunch beliefs and strong disciplines with them and settled in an untamed wilderness which became Cleburne County. Cleburne County and Its Peoplehas drawn from the past and the present--chronicling the lives of settlers facing hardships and tragedies, discovering profound beauty, mastering vast natural resources, and formulating democratic ideals. The stories in this book are honest interpretations of the human experience intertwined with the old and the new and adding exciting dimensions to the county of Cleburne and the state of Arkansas. The objective of Carl J. Barger, the compiler of Cleburne County and Its People, is to preserve a history of the county of his birth for students, historians, and all of the citizens of Cleburne County. Carl J. Barger is the author of Swords and Plowshares, a Civil War love story, and Mamie, an Ozark Mountain Girl of Courage, a story of the Ozark Mountain people, set in Cleburne and Van Buren Counties.

Book excerpt: Modern-day fly fishing, like much in life, has become exceedingly complex, with high-tech gear, a confusing array of flies and terminal tackle, accompanied by high-priced fishing guides. This book reveals that the best way to catch trout is simply, with a rod and a fly and not much else. The wisdom in this book comes from a simpler time, when the premise was: the more you know, the less you need. It teaches the reader how to discover where the fish are, at what depth, and what they are feeding on. Then it describes the techniques needed to present a fly at that depth, make it look lifelike, and hook the fish. With chapters on wet flies, nymphs, and dry flies, its authors employ both the tenkara rod as well as regular fly fishing gear to cover all the bases. Illustrated by renowned fish artist James Prosek, with inspiring photographs and stories throughout, Simple Fly Fishing reveals the secrets and the soul of this captivating sport.

Book excerpt: "This is the first publication presenting the vintage prints of Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959), one of America's greatest portraitists. For a half century Disfarmer was the people's photographer of Heber Springs, Arkansas. He made studio portraits at pennies a picture to satisfy his rural clients, yet he was an odd genius who created a style of portraiture all his own. Until now Disfarmer has been known to the world only through prints made from negatives found years after his death. Now, with the discovery of his vintage prints, we get to see the pictures as he made them."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Becoming Disfarmer uses over 100 images to tell the story of Mike Disfarmer's vernacular portraiture and its transformation into art. This is the first monograph on Disfarmer to feature his vintage prints along with a selection of enlargements made from his negatives in the 1970s. Disfarmer's postcard size vintage photographs are reproduced in full color to convey their varied surfaces and most are shown in the condition in which they were found, rather than as restored images. The backs of numerous vintage photographs are reproduced and transcriptions of the handwritten notes that appear on the objects are provided. In addition, the monograph has high quality reproductions of newspaper pages in which Disfarmer's images appeared, locally produced historical journals that include images by other photographers who worked in the same time and region as Disfarmer and album pages like those for which Disfarmer's photographs were originally made. Complete with three scholarly essays on the artist's work, a bibliography and exhibition history, this monograph qualifies as the most comprehensive Disfarmer publication to date.

Book excerpt: Poetry. "Interesting and readable info, sources and legends and researches—in poetry form! The Archons of Investigative Poetry are pleased with Mark Spitzer's CRYPTO-ARKANSAS."—Ed Sanders "Mark Spitzer's work is as boundlessly inclusive as the journal he edits, The Toad Suck Review. Both are proof that the more interests and influences are incorporated, the more original the creation may become. This example of 'investigative poetics' into 'mythological crypto-zoological creatures' is in one sense pure Ozark-Arkansan, but is also a veritable cioppino-paella-bouillabaise-gumbo cum kitchen sink of Twain, Ed Sanders, dada, tall frontier tale-telling, Paterson, Gerald Haslam, and scholarly-journalistic research or the spoofing of it. It is Americana, archetypalism ... There is a formidable mind at work here, and a seemingly limitless creativity."—Gerald Locklin

Book excerpt: Arkansas' Fields of Dreams... Travel down almost any backroad in Arkansas and you will pass a relic of Arkansas' baseball history. The dilapidated back stops and the remains of long-neglected dugouts are a disappearing visual image of a rural sports history long forgotten. In the first half of the 20th century, baseball was the chosen sport of farmers, coal miners, timber cutters, and even sharecroppers. No educational affiliation was required, and elementary school drop-outs were welcome. If someone could buy a ball, or even make one, and procure a bat or two, the game was on. The three acres or so needed to play were readily available, as was the creek for the after-game bath. These are rural Arkansas' Fields of Dreams. Stop the car, get out, and walk out to the forgotten ball field. Sit in the rickety dugout and look out at the field. See the game? The players of your imagination are an important part of our heritage. This book is an attempt to keep the stories of these rural baseball players alive.
