Mechanical aspects of MBE-4, quadrupole insulator performance, and pulsers are discussed. The computer code, SLID, has been used to help understand the longitudinal beam dynamics in MBE-4. A computer-controlled emittance scanning system is in use in MBE-4. A systematic effort is under way to discover and correct all the defects peculiar to the low energy part of the linac design code. Book excerpt: Some highlights of the program during this reporting period are as follows: (1) First results with the completed apparatus of the Single Beam Transport Experiment (SBTE) have shown the stable propagation of a space-charge-dominated cesium-ion beam through 41 periods of an AG focussing lattice. The space-charge effects were large enough to depress the betatron phase advance per cell from sigma0 = 60° to sigma = 12°. (2) Understanding of the reflection stabilization of longitudinal instability in a high-current beam bunch has been improved by analytical and computational studies. (3) Conceptual design studies of a multiple-beam ion induction linac suitable for the High Temperature Experiment have progressed to the stage where a first reference design (sodium, 125 MeV, 30 .mu. C, 16 beams) is available. (4) The Long-Pulse Induction Accelerating Unit, first used to accelerate a cesium-ion beam in February 1983, has been undergoing modification in the low-level trigger circuitry to allow more precisely controlled waveform synthesis.

Book excerpt: Highlights from this reporting period are as follows: (1) the 200 keV cesium ion injector for the Single Beam Transport Experiment has been operated extensively in development and measurement of the quadrupole matching system and beam emittance control. Construction of the complete transport system is well advanced; (2) beam diagnostic tools continue to be improved. The electron beam probe has been used extensively to study ion beams in varying stages of charge neutralization. Development of systems using scintillators and the EG and G Optical Multichannel Analyzer (OMA-2) continues; (3) the Long-Pulse Induction Module (LPIM) is in the final stages of construction. A two-core prototype test cell has been assembled and tested to nearly 106 pulses. Development of both the switch tube (ignitron) and pulse-forming network has proceeded rapidly and successfully; (4) silica-loaded polymer insulator development is continuing at a low level; and (5) theoretical studies of longitudinal beam bunch dynamics using I. Haber's computer simulation code, quadrupole and octupole transport channels and solenoid focussing channels using neutralized beams have received considerable emphasis during this time. The exploration of possible induction linac parameters for a High Temperature experiment (HTE) is continuing.

Book excerpt: Major accomplisments in the second half of Fiscal Year 1980 include: the large aperture Cs/sup +1/ contact ionization source has been operational through most of this period. The full system comprised of source plus three drift tubes was brought into operation early in April 1980. Beam profiles and current measurements indicate that the system performs close to design specifications. System studies have been expanded to include multiple beam systems, in addition to the single beam systems studied heretofore. Work has continued on the development of beam diagnostic devices. Most of the effort has been directed toward the development of the electron beam probe and scintillator systems. Zeolite source development is continuing, with major emphasis on source stability and lifetime. A model for the longitudinal resistive wall instability has been developed which indicates the induction linac beam should be stable to first order in the resistance. Considerable theory effort has also been concentrated upon the transport of space charge dominated beams through periodic focussing structures. A multiple electrostatic quadrupole array capable of handling forty nine parallel beamlets has been designed and constructed.
