Book excerpt: These six lecture courses provide the background necessary in the understanding of the application of lattice methods to phenomenology, and give examples of interesting applications. The first three introduce the necessary techniques: chiral perturbation theory, heavy quark effective field theory, and lattice gauge theory. The remaining three describe how these techniques are used, mainly in lattice simulations, in the study of interesting phenomenological questions: vacuum structure, finite temperature QCD, and electroweak matrix elements. What distinguishes this volume from others is its focus on providing the background necessary for us to understand the methods and the significance of lattice gauge theory research.

Book excerpt: The generalization of QCD from three to NC colors, developed in 1974 by Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, has proved to be an extraordinarily useful and robust theoretical extension for studying the behavior of strong interaction physics. This book is the proceedings of the first-ever meeting exclusively devoted to large NC QCD. The workshop brought together representatives of many subdisciplines for a “meeting of minds” on topics ranging from finite temperature and density to the lattice, perturbative QCD, instantons, mesons, baryons, and nuclear physics. Beginning with 't Hooft's keynote presentation, the contributions are designed to introduce uses of large NC methods in each specialty to a broader particle physics audience.

Book excerpt: Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Basic methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are also presented. The appendices provide students and newcomers to the field with the necessary background information, and include a set of problems and solutions.

Book excerpt: We use a four-dimensional lattice calculation of the full-QCD (quantum chromodynamics, the non-abliean gauge theory of the strong interactions of quarks and gluons) path integrals needed to determine the masses of the charmed and bottom baryons. In the charm sector, our results are in good agreement with experiment within our systematics, except for the spin-1/2 $\Xi_{cc}$, for which we found the isospin-averaged mass to be $\Xi_{cc}$ to be $3665\pm17\pm14^{+0}_{-78}$ MeV. We predict the mass of the (isospin-averaged) spin-1/2 $\Omega_{cc}$ to be $3763\pm19\pm26^{+13}_{-79}$ {MeV}. In the bottom sector, our results are also in agreement with experimental observations and other lattice calculations within our statistical and systematic errors. In particular, we find the mass of the $\Omega_b$ to be consistent with the recent CDF measurement. We also predict the mass for the as yet unobserved $\Xi^\prime_b$ to be 5955(27) MeV.

In the last few years there has been an explosion of techniques for performing ever more accurate studies on the properties of strongly interacting particles. Lattice predictions directly impact many areas of particle and nuclear physics theory and phenomenology. This book provides a thorough introduction to the specialized techniques needed to carry out numerical simulations of QCD: a description of lattice discretizations of fermions and gauge fields, methods for actually doing a simulation, descriptions of common strategies to connect simulation results to predictions of physical quantities, and a discussion of uncertainties in lattice simulations. More importantly, while lattice QCD is a well-defined field in its own right, it has many connections to continuum field theory and elementary particle physics phenomenology, which are carefully elucidated in this book./a /remove

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we study effective field theories for doubly heavy baryons and lattice QCD. We construct a chiral Lagrangian for doubly heavy baryons and heavy mesons that is invariant under heavy quark-diquark symmetry at leading order and includes the leading O(1/mQ) symmetry violating operators. The theory is used to predict the electromagnetic decay width of the J = 32 member of the ground state doubly heavy baryon doublet. Numerical estimates are provided for doubly charm baryons. We also calculate chiral corrections to doubly heavy baryon masses and strong decay widths of low lying excited doubly heavy baryons. We derive the couplings of heavy diquarks to weak currents in the limit of heavy quark-diquark symmetry, and construct the chiral Lagrangian for doubly heavy baryons coupled to weak currents. Chiral corrections to doubly heavy baryon zero-recoil semileptonic decay for both unquenched and partially quenched QCD are calculated. This theory is used to derive chiral extrapolation formulae for measurements of the doubly heavy baryon zero-recoil semileptonic decay form factors in lattice QCD simulations. Additionally, we study the pion physics on lattice using chiral perturbation theory. For finite volume field theories with discrete translational invariance, conserved currents can obtain additional corrections from infrared effects. We demonstrate this for pions using chiral perturbation theory coupled to electromagnetism in a periodic box. Gauge invariant single particle effective theories are constructed to explain these results. We use chiral perturbation theory to study the extraction of pion electromagnetic polarizabilities from lattice QCD. Chiral extrapolation formulae are derived for partially quenched and quenched QCD simulations. We determine finite volume corrections to the Compton scattering tensor of pions.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the discussions by renown researchers on questions emerged during transition from the relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC) to the future electron ion collider (EIC). Over the past two decades, the RHIC has provided a vast amount of data over a wide range of the center of mass energies. What are the scientific priorities, after RHIC is shut down and turned to the future EIC? What should be the future focuses of the high-energy nuclear collisions? What are thermodynamic properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at large baryon density? Where is the phase boundary between quark-gluon-plasma and hadronic matter at high baryon density? How does one make connections from thermodynamics learned in high-energy nuclear collisions to astrophysical topics, to name few, the inner structure of compact stars, and perhaps more interestingly, the dynamical processes of the merging of neutron stars? While most particle physicists are interested in Dark Matter, we should focus on the issues of Visible Matter! Multiple heavy-ion accelerator complexes are under construction: NICA at JINR (4 ~ 11 GeV), FAIR at GSI (2 ~ 4.9 GeV SIS100), HIAF at IMP (2 ~ 4 GeV). In addition, the heavy-ion collision has been actively discussed at the J-PARC. The book is a collective work of top researchers from the field where some of the above-mentioned basic questions will be addressed. We believe that answering those questions will certainly advance our understanding of the phase transition in early universe as well as its evolution that leads to today's world of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Despite the long success of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as the theory of the strong interactions, there remains much to be understood about the structure of hadrons and the consequences of QCD in the nonperturbative regime. Lattice gauge theory, a framework nearly as old as QCD itself, makes calculations in this regime possible, starting from first principles. With advances in theoretical understanding, methods, and computer technology, the lattice has found application to an ever-widening range of problems. In this dissertation, I consider two such problems having to do with the structure of baryons. The first concerns the contribution of sea quarks, and the strange quark in particular, to form factors of the nucleon. This has been a long-standing challenge for the lattice, because such contributions involve the insertion of a current on a quark loop, demanding the full inversion of the discretized Dirac operator, conceptually a large sparse matrix. I discuss methods for addressing this challenge and present a calculation of the strange scalar form factor and the related parameter f Ts . The latter is of great theoretical interest, since it enters into the cross section for the scattering of dark matter off nuclei in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. As such, it represents a major uncertainty in the interpretation of direct detection experiments. I also present results for the strange quark contribution to the nucleon's axial and electromagnetic form factors, which are themselves the subject of active experimental programs. These calculations were performed using the Wilson fermion formulation on a 24 3 x 64 anisotropic lattice. In the second part of the dissertation, I turn to the valence sector and address the role of diquark correlations in the observed spectrum of hadrons and their properties. A diquark is a correlated pair of quarks, thought to play an important role in certain phenomenological models of hadrons. I present results for baryon wave functions, evaluated in both the Coulomb and Landau gauges. By comparing baryons that differ in their diquark content, I find evidence for enhanced correlation in the scalar diquark channel, as favored by QCD-inspired quark models. I also present results for diquark mass splittings, determined from diquark correlators in the Landau gauge. This second set of calculations was performed with the overlap Dirac operator on quenched gauge configurations at B = 6.

Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to main ideas used in the physics of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The links between basic theoretical concepts (discussed gradually from the elementary to more advanced level) and the results of experiments are outlined, so that experimentalists may learn more about the foundations of the models used by them to fit and interpret the data, while theoreticians may learn more about how different theoretical ideas are used in practical applications. The main task of the book is to collect the available information and establish a uniform picture of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The properties of hot and dense matter implied by this picture are discussed comprehensively. In particular, the issues concerning the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in present and future heavy-ion experiments are addressed.

Book excerpt: Baryon masses at varying values of Nc and light quark masses are studied with Lattice QCD and the results are analyzed in a low energy effective theory based on a combined framework of the 1/Nc and Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory expansions. Lattice QCD results for Nc=3, 5 and 7 obtained in quenched calculations, as well as results for unquenched calculations for Nc=3, are used for the analysis. The results are consistent with a previous analysis of Nc=3 LQCD results, and in addition permit the determination of sub-leading in 1/Nc effects in the spin-flavor singlet component of the baryon masses as well as in the hyperfine splittings.

Book excerpt: The phase structure of particle physics shows up in matter at extremely high densities and/or temperatures as they were reached in the early universe, shortly after the big bang, or in heavy-ion collisions, as they are performed nowadays in laboratory experiments. In contrast to phase transitions of condensed matter physics, the underlying fundamental theories are better known than their macroscopic manifestations in phase transitions. These theories are quantum chromodynamics for the strong interaction part and the electroweak part of the Standard Model for the electroweak interaction. It is their non-Abelian gauge structure that makes it a big challenge to predict the type of phase conversion between phases of different symmetries and different particle contents. The book is about a variety of analytical and numerical tools that are needed to study the phase structure of particle physics. To these belong convergent and asymptotic expansions in strong and weak couplings, dimensional reduction, renormalization group studies, gap equations, Monte Carlo simulations with and without fermions, finite-size and finite-mass scaling analyses, and the approach of effective actions as supplement to first-principle calculations.
