This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring the flavors of Hawaiian barbecue straight to your backyard! Many regions have their unique take on what the word "barbecue" means to their culture. When we think of traditional barbecue, there is one particularly delicious regional barbecue that unfortunately often gets forgotten - the barbecue of Hawaii. What is the image that comes to mind when you think about Hawaiian barbecue? Do you picture a scene that is almost paradise? Soft sands, clear waters, lush palm trees that cool the persistent heat as you enjoy meats so tender that they melt in your mouth, and flavors that are so fresh and tropical that you close your eyes, hardly believing that they are real? If this isn't the image in your mind, it should be. A traditional Hawaiian barbecue is called a luau, and is a celebration of life, people, and food, and that is something that we should all do more of every day. Many of the traditional luau foods are slow-cooked over a smoky pit, giving us the impression that it is simply impossible to enjoy these delicacies without being able to travel to the islands any time we wish. While it may not be possible to completely recreate a Hawaiian atmosphere in your home and backyard, you can come really close with this collection of authentic Hawaiian barbecue recipes. Inside, find: An introduction to Hawaii and their barbecue cuisine Common words that you might or might not know that are used in Hawaii and Hawaiian cooking Tasty appetizer recipes like the Pineapple Rumaki or the Mango Chicken Skewers Savory chicken recipes like the Shoyu Chicken or the Mochiko Chicken on the Grill Delicious beef recipes like the Pacific Carne Asada or the Hawaiian Beef Teriyaki Great pork and spam recipes like the Grilled Spam Burgers with Cilantro Slaw or the Grilled Kalua Style Pork Refreshing fish and seafood recipes like the Perfect Grilled Moonfish or the Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos Masterful vegetable and side recipes like the Hawaiian Baked Beans or the Caramelized onion Maui Rice Easy to prepare Island desserts like the Haupia or the Kulolo Let's start cooking! Download or read book Kauai as it was in the 1940s and '50s written by Mike Ashman and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kauai As It Was In The 1940s and '50s is a lively first-hand account of life on Kauai as it was lived in the radio days of the 1940s and 1950s. Author Mike Ashman, a popular radio announcer for KTOH, Kauai's first commercial radio station, takes readers back to the days when sugar plantations were the center of island life, and Honolulu was a far, faraway place. Ashman's cast of characters include "Mr. Kauai," Charlie Fern, the long-time editor of The Garden Island newspaper, the local musicians he shared a bandstand with, the famous, and the infamous. Ashman captures the pathos of Kauai's tight-knit community in the uncertain days prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the era when the island emerged from its rural isolation in the heady post-war years of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Book Synopsis Na Pua Alii o Kauai by : Frederick B. Wichman
Download or read book Na Pua Alii o Kauai written by Frederick B. Wichman and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Kauai's ruling chiefs were passed from generation to generation in songs and narratives recited by trained storytellers either formally at the high chief's court or informally at family gatherings. Their chronology was ordered by a ruler's genealogy, which, in the case of the pua alii (flower of royalty), was illustrious and far reaching and could be traced to one of the four great gods of Polynesia--Käne, Kü, Lono, and Kanaloa. In these legends, Hawaiians of old sought answers to the questions "Who are we?" "Who are our ancestors and where do they come from?" "What lessons can be learned from their conduct?" Nä Pua Alii o Kauai presents the stories of the men and women who ruled the island of Kauai from its first settlement to the final rebellion against Kamehameha I's forces in 1824. Only fragments remain of the nearly two-thousand-year history of the people who inhabited Kauai before the coming of James Cook in 1778. Now scattered in public and private archives and libraries, these pieces of Hawaii's precontact past were recorded in the nineteenth century by such determined individuals as David Malo, Samuel Kamakau, and Abraham Fornander. All known genealogical references to the Kauai alii nui (paramount chiefs) have been gathered here and placed in chronological order and are interspersed with legends of great voyages, bitter wars, courageous heroes, and passionate romances that together form a rich and invaluable resource.
