Book Synopsis Deaf Education Beyond the Western World by : Harry Knoors
Download or read book Deaf Education Beyond the Western World written by Harry Knoors and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If teachers want to educate deaf learners effectively, they have to apply evidence-informed methods and didactics with the needs of individual deaf students in mind. Education in general -- and education for deaf learners in particular -- is situated in broader societal contexts, where what works within the Western world may be quite different from what works beyond the Western world. By exploring practice-based and research-based evidence about deaf education in countries that largely have been left out of the international discussion thus far, this volume encourages more researchers in more countries to continue investigating the learning environment of deaf learners, based on the premise of leaving no one behind. Featuring chapters centering on 19 countries, from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe, the volume offers a picture of deaf education from the perspectives of local scholars and teachers who demonstrate best practices and challenges within their respective regional contexts. This volume addresses the notion of learning through the exchange of knowledge; outlines the commonalities and differences between practices and policies in educating deaf and hard-of-hearing learners; and looks ahead to the prospects for the future development of deaf education research in the context of recently adopted international legal frameworks. Stimulating academic exchange regionally and globally among scholars and teachers who are fascinated by and invested in deaf education, this volume strengthens the foundation for further improvement of education for deaf children all around the world.

Book Synopsis We Were Relentless by : Martin J. Levin
Download or read book We Were Relentless written by Martin J. Levin and published by We Were Relentless. This book was released on 2009 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Bloomfield, MI Life for the able-bodied is difficult enough. There are confusing individual choices to make, the usual minefield of relationships, financial uncertainty, and other challenges of the real world. Imagine how much more difficult it would be for those who have to live with disabilities such as needing a wheelchair to get around, or being blind, or deaf. Author Martin J. Levin shares with readers an inspiring and stirring account of his son's struggles and triumphs in WE WERE RELENTLESS: A Family's Journey to Overcome Disability. Jordan Levin's life started out as a perilous and suspenseful adventure for his parents. Born three months premature, he was so small that he weighed only 31 ounces with tiny hands the size of a man's fingernail. He had to have a series of operations to correct conditions that threatened his grip on life. But hang on he did. And when it seemed that everything would turn out fine, Jordan was diagnosed as being profoundly deaf he could hear sounds with frequencies below a certain threshold, but above that and he was at a loss. Amazingly, even before the diagnosis, young Jordan had the uncanny innate ability to lip-read. So, with the courage and foresight of his parents who were determined to raise him as normally as possible, he learned how to speak, graduated with a B.A. from Michigan State University, and grew up to become a successful and confident man. Later, he would embark on a career as a motivational speaker and personal trainer. More than a fascinating story of a person's triumph over disability, WE WERE RELENTLESS: A Family's Journey to Overcome Disability is also a touching account about a father's and mother's love for their son and how they encouraged him every step of the way to be all that he could be. Book Synopsis Advances in Special Education Research and Praxis in Selected Countries of Africa, Caribbean and the Middle East by : Kagendo Mutua
Download or read book Advances in Special Education Research and Praxis in Selected Countries of Africa, Caribbean and the Middle East written by Kagendo Mutua and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, cultural and educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, for instance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in many parts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higher levels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to the widely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practices in the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of difference in the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact that majority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the ideal of inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislative framework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of disabilities and limited funding sources. Chapters in this volume explore inclusive education from a variety of perspectives.
Book Synopsis Assessment of Young Developmentally Disabled Children by : Theodore D. Wachs
Download or read book Assessment of Young Developmentally Disabled Children written by Theodore D. Wachs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the cognitive and social-emotional functioning of developmentally disabled infants and preschoolers derives, in large part, from our assessment of such children. This book has been developed to familiarize readers with the characteristics of developmentally disabled children, and to introduce to readers aspects of measurement that are of relevance to the assessment of atypical infants and preschoolers. The book has been developed with clinicians and prospective clinicians in mind. These are individuals who are committed to the care and education of developmentally disabled infants and preschoolers and the families of those children. The book has thus been written to provide support for the use of assessment data in planning early interven tion programs. Of special note in the development of this edited book is that it is divided into four major parts with interrelated chapters in each part. The authors of chapters in Parts II and III had access to the chapters in Part I before writing their chapters. The summary chap ters found in Part IV were similarly written by authors having access to all chapters in Parts I-III. This approach to the development of an edited book was chosen as a way of ensuring an integration of major concepts throughout the book. This process is also a reflection of our belief that assessment is an interdisciplinary process, involving the syn thesis of a number of diverse interests.
Book Synopsis Deafness, Deprivation, and IQ by : Jeffery P. Braden
Download or read book Deafness, Deprivation, and IQ written by Jeffery P. Braden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deafness is a "low incidence" disability and, therefore not studied or understood in the same way as other disabilities. Historically, research in deafness has been conducted by a small group of individuals who communicated mainly with each other. That is not to say that we did not sometimes publish in the mainstream or attempt to communicate outside our small circle. Nonetheless, most research appeared in deafness-related publications where it was not likely to be seen or valued by psychologists. Those researchers did not understand what they could leam from the study of deaf people or how their knowledge of individual differ ences and abilites applied to that population. In Deafness, Deprivation, ami /Q, Jeffrey Braden pulls together two often unrelated fields: studies of intelligence and deafness. The book includes the largest single compilation of data describing deaf people's intelligence that exists. Here is a careful, well-documented, and very thorough analysis of virtually ali the research available. Those who have studied human intelligence have long noted that deafness provides a "natural experiment." This book makes evident two contrary results: on the one hand, some research points to the impact deafness has on intelligence; on the other hand, the research supports the fact that deafness has very little, if any, impact on nonverbal measures of intelligence.
