Book excerpt: This qualitative cross-analysis case study examined the unheard voices of middle school students to report their perceptions of caring in their schools. This study utilized focus group interviews to allow thirty-one middle school students from two rural school districts in Southeast Texas the opportunity to discuss attributes of caring they perceive as important for schools. A male student group and a female student group from each school were interviewed to allow a wide range of perceptions from the students. The interviews were analyzed and coded for common themes. The twelve common themes that emerged from the interviews were: characteristics of caring teachers; attributes of a caring principal; trust; respect; motivation; high expectations; the classroom environment; safety; equity; connectedness; voice; and the need for change. Four other isolated themes emerged: friendship; family; support; and relationships between students. The voices of the student participants present an honest and insightful dialogue on the topic of caring in two rural public middle schools.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the experience of teacher empathy for middle school students at two Christian academies in central Alabama. Extant studies have contributed to the theoretical, empirical, and practical understanding of teacher empathy, but few have captured the voices of middle school students to understand their lived experiences; no studies have explored the topic in Christian academies. The theories guiding this study were Rogers’ theory of self and subsequent theories about student-centered pedagogy. The central research question was focused on the perceptions of teacher empathy as voiced by middle school students in Christian academies. Four research sub-questions were designed to dissect teacher empathy along cognitive, affective, and behavioral lines. Data collection in this transcendental phenomenological study included individual interviews with 10 students purposely selected from two schools, a focus group session with six of the participants, and letters written to hypothetical future middle school teachers. Data analysis followed Moustakas’ process of bracketing, open coding, and thematic analysis, yielding major themes of teacher engagement, means of empathy, immediate impact, and long-term impact. Findings revealed middle school students perceived teacher empathy as a relational process that positively impacted their personal and academic growth. A major implication for decision-makers is the necessity to prioritize relational cultures; administrators at Christian academies should also prioritize the inclusion of distinct Christian elements like prayer and scripture. The implication for teachers is the necessity to build ongoing, nonjudgmental, and transparent relationships that lead to functional, fundamental, and profound empathic opportunities.

It seeks to determine the extent that middle school students feel cared for by teachers and other adults in school and to identify specific student perceived adult caring and non-caring behaviors. Research methods include the creation and administration of a three-question survey administered to school students (grades 7and 8) who attend an upper Midwestern middle school. Survey results are interpreted referencing attachment and self-systems theory. Research findings suggest that teachers must focus on and address both academic and personal needs to create meaningful teacher-student relationships that are perceived by students as caring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior. Personality. Adolescence. Academic performance. These are some of the buzz phrases prevalent in middle school settings as educators wrestle with how to understand, manage, lead, and work with our middle school students and help shape them into responsible young adults. Character education (and many terms like it) is a concept that has been around for many years on every level of the educational process. In the middle school setting, there is an urgent need for character education, regardless of what form it takes. Sadly, some schools and/or the administration abandon this process in the vigorous pursuit of higher test scores. This book condenses my empirical research into character education with a focus on the inner city middle school setting. I examined how school stakeholders viewed this topic, what they know about it, why they support or disapprove of character education, and possible steps schools could take to implement their own initiatives successfully, both in the middle school setting and others as well.

Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities (JGC) at Stanford University has worked in partnership with the Redwood City School District (RCSD) to gain a deeper understanding of classroom practices that promote motivation and achievement in middle school. Each spring, all middle school students in the district complete a survey about their motivational beliefs and their classroom experiences. The 2011 survey incorporated a new set of questions designed to capture students' perceptions of classroom practices that convey care and support. This focus emerged from conversations with teachers and administrators and reflects RCSD's commitment to building supportive classroom communities that emphasize effort and improvement. This research suggests that all middle school students in the district can benefit from practices that communicate care for students as individuals and as a group of learners regardless of their gender, ethnicity, income level or academic history. These practices have the potential to launch students on a positive academic pathway by cultivating a belief system that encourages students to engage and persist with their learning. Moreover, students appear to be responsive to a range of strategies for communicating care and support for their learning. To summarize, these analyses highlight the following key findings: (1) Motivational beliefs consistently predict achievement; (2) Care can be conveyed to students through multiple approaches; (3) Seventh grade marks a dip in students' perceptions of care; and (4) Perceptions of care vary according to students' proficiency levels in math. (Contains 4 figures and 4 footnotes.) [Additional funding for this paper was provided by the John and Terry Levin Fund for Improving K-12 Education.].

Book excerpt: "This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong correlation existed between students' perceptions of teachers' behaviors and student self reports of academic competence"--Abstract.
