Book Synopsis Saving Lives in Wartime China by : John R. Watt
Download or read book Saving Lives in Wartime China written by John R. Watt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s and 1930s most Chinese people suffered from overwhelming health problems. Epidemic diseases killed tens of millions, drought, flood and famine killed many more, and unhygienic birthing led to serious maternal and child mortality. The Civil War between Nationalist and Communist forces, and the nationwide War of Resistance against Japan (1937-1945), imposed a further tide of misery. Troubled by this extensive trauma, a small number of healthcare reformers were able to save tens of thousands of lives, promote hygiene and sanitation, and begin to bring battlefield casualties, communicable diseases, and maternal child mortality under control. This study shows how biomedical physicians and public health practitioners were major contributors to the rise of modern China.

Following a value-chain framework, the 16 chapters cover the payers, the providers, and the producers (manufacturers) in China's system. It also provides a detailed analysis of the historical development of China's healthcare system, the current state of its broad reforms, and the uneasy balance between China's market-driven approach and governmental regulation. Most importantly, it devotes considerable attention to the major problems confronting China, including chronic illness, public health, and long-term care and economic security for the elderly. Burns and Liu have assembled the latest research from leading health economists and political scientists, as well as senior public health officials and corporate executives, making this book an essential read for industry professionals, policymakers, researchers, and students studying comparative health systems across the world.

Book Synopsis Politics Medicine China/h by : David M Lampton
Download or read book Politics Medicine China/h written by David M Lampton and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1977-10-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, medical analysts and officials concerned with the United States and the Third World are searching for alternative means by which to bring needed health services to their people. For a mixture of reasons, including China's visible success, cultural resonance, and historical accident, the Chinese health experience has come to occupy an exalted place among the many possible alternatives. In the process of assessing the applicability of China's medical programs, however, insufficient attention has been directed toward analyzing the concrete results of past policies and the reasons for subsequent policy change. While this volume is specifically concerned with analyzing the reasons for policy change, and deriving a coherent view of the Chinese political process from that analysis, this discussion should provide the background -for informed public policy debate here and abroad. This study has the objective of examining and explaining changes in Chinese health care policy during the 1949-1977 period. The questions which this study seeks to answer are: why have policies changed, why have they moved in the directions they have, and what does all this tell us about the Chinese policy process? Seven important areas of medical policy will be considered: medical education, medical research, the structure of the health care delivery system, service financing, the conditions of physician employment, traditional medicine, and mass campaigns.

You can dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes just by changing your diet. More than 30 years ago, nutrition researcher T. Colin Campbell and his team at Cornell, in partnership with teams in China and England, embarked upon the China Study, the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease. What they found when combined with findings in Colin's laboratory, opened their eyes to the dangers of a diet high in animal protein and the unparalleled health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet. In 2005, Colin and his son Tom, now a physician, shared those findings with the world in The China Study, hailed as one of the most important books about diet and health ever written. Featuring brand new content, this heavily expanded edition of Colin and Tom's groundbreaking book includes the latest undeniable evidence of the power of a plant-based diet, plus updated information about the changing medical system and how patients stand to benefit from a surging interest in plant-based nutrition. The China Study—Revised and Expanded Edition presents a clear and concise message of hope as it dispels a multitude of health myths and misinformation. The basic message is clear. Book Synopsis Medicine and Memory in Tibet by : Theresia Hofer
Download or read book Medicine and Memory in Tibet written by Theresia Hofer and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only fifty years ago, Tibetan medicine, now seen in China as a vibrant aspect of Tibetan culture, was considered a feudal vestige to be eliminated through government-led social transformation. Medicine and Memory in Tibet examines medical revivalism on the geographic and sociopolitical margins both of China and of Tibets medical establishment in Lhasa, exploring the work of medical practitioners, or amchi, and of Medical Houses in the west-central region of Tsang. Due to difficult research access and the power of state institutions in the writing of history, the perspectives of more marginal amchi have been absent from most accounts of Tibetan medicine. Theresia Hofer breaks new ground both theoretically and ethnographically, in ways that would be impossible in todays more restrictive political climate that severely limits access for researchers. She illuminates how medical practitioners safeguarded their professional heritage through great adversity and personal hardship.
