Book excerpt: Headhunters of the Amazon (1921) which tells an extraordinary story of exploration and adventure of Fritz Graff. As a practice, headhunting has been the subject of intense discussion within the anthropological community as to its possible social roles, functions, and motivations. Headhunting is the practice of taking and preserving a person's head after killing the person. Headhunting was practised in historic times in parts of Oceania, South and Southeast Asia, West and Central Africa, and Mesoamerica, as well as among certain tribes of the Celts, the West Germanic tribes, the Vikings and Scythians of ancient Europe. It occurred in Europe until the 19th century in Montenegro, Croatia, and western parts of Herzegovina and to the end of the Middle Ages in Ireland and the Anglo-Scottish border regions. Several tribes of the Jivaroan group including the Shuar in Eastern Ecuador and Northern Peru, along the rivers Chinchipe, Bobonaza, Morona, Upano, and Pastaza, main tributaries of the Amazon, practised headhunting for trophies that were then shrunk, know locally as Tzan-Tzas which they believed housed the soul of the person killed. The Shuar today still produce replicas using the original precess from the skinheads of monkeys and sloths in order to sell them to tourists. It is believed that there are still splinter groups in the local tribes that continue with these practises of their forefathers whenever there is a tribal feud over territory or as revenge for a crime of pasion. Themes that arise in anthropological writings about headhunting include mortification of the rival, ritual violence, cosmological balance, the display of manhood, cannibalism, prestige, and as a means of securing the services of the victim as a slave in the afterlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is not given to many of us to wander through the waste places of the earth, and too often the explorer leaves no written record of his experiences. Mr. Up de Graff led an adventurous life in the region drained by the extreme head waters of the Amazon, and he was a keen observer of all that passed on around him. As he says, he is not a trained naturalist and the deductions he draws from some of his observations may be questioned by men whose life work is natural history, but any such criticisms do not detract from the value of the work. Anyone who has tried it out knows that three equally reliable men observing together a scene or incident, combining variety of action with rapidity of duration may make greatly varying independent reports of what took place.

Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: stem must be unique in all the world. We met the "Admiral" in a tavern, from which he had just ejected everyone else with the aid of a table-leg which he still grasped when we entered. His name was Brown, and he was from Pittsburg. He was the navigating officer, chief gunner, and engineer of the Ecuadorian fleet, which was lying at that moment under repair in the harbour of Guayaquil. The fleet was composed of a couple of gun-boats, known to the English-speaking residents as the Espere un poco and the Pasada ma-ana.From Guayaquil I went up the Guayas, a tidal river, to Bodegas, the greatest cacao-collecting station in the world. It lies about eighty miles from the port of Guayaquil. Never have I seen such enormous numbers of alligators as those which lived along that river. The water seemed to be composed of mud and alligators. The mud-bars were almost eclipsed by them. We ran over them and into them all the time. Thus it happened that just two and a half years frRead More

Book excerpt: The Jivaro Indians of the Peru-Ecuador interior have long been renowned for their ferocity and cruelty in warfare; they are also shamanistic, communing with ancient spectres through the ingestion of poisonous hallucinogens. But above all, the Jivaro are known for their unique and macabre brand of death magic -- the severing and shrinking of human heads. JIVARO is the true account of an expedition into the Amazon rain forest to locate and study the Jivaro Indians; their dialects, social structures, methods of survival, and -- above all -- the orgiastic witchcraft rites which culminate in the slaughter, decapitation and spell-binding of their enemies, whose souls are forever imprisoned and silenced by the ritual reduction of their heads. - Illustrated throughout - with a new Introduction - two anthropological Forewords on the Jivaro and the history of human trophy-taking JIVARO is one of the true classics of populist ethnography, a vivid record of a vanishing way of life which retains its power to grip, and sometimes shock, the reader.

Book excerpt: Head Hunters of the Amazon is one of the greatest adventure books of all time. In 1894 the author, just out of a New York college, took off for the headwaters of the Amazon. For seven years he survived piranhas, army ants, vampire bats, electric eels, murdous pirates, giant whirpools, 30-foot anacondas, sand crabs, parasites, and -- of course -- headhunters. Book excerpt: The Amazon Indian is an icon that straddles the world between the professional anthropologist and the popular media. Presented alternately as the noble primitive, the savior of the environment, and as a savage, dissolute, cannibalistic half-human, it is an image well worth examining. Stephen Nugent does just that, critiquing the claims of authoritativeness inherent in visual images presented by anthropologists of Amazon life in the early 20th century and comparing them with the images found in popular books, movies, and posters. The book depicts the field of anthropology as its own form of culture industry and contrasts it to other similar industries, past and present. For visual anthropologists, ethnographers, Amazon specialists, and popular culture researchers, Nugent's book will be enlightening, entertaining reading.
