Book excerpt: When the spirit of his recently deceased uncle appears in his kitchen, lonely mortician Octavious Waldorf can only guess the ghost isn’t there just for the coffee. His miserly uncle reveals the location of a hidden fortune with the promise of more if Otto will spread the dead man’s ashes across the Caribbean Sea. Through a simple mistake Otto ends up with almost a million of the mafia’s money instead of his uncle’s simple few thousand. Otto does what any desperate man would do and flees the country aboard a cruise ship headed to the Bahamas to fulfill his uncle’s last request. With the money, his dead uncle’s ashes, and a nervous schnauzer in tow, Otto sets out to change his fortune and life. That near million just so happens to belong to crime boss and all around bad guy Tony “Waldorf” Maloney (no relation), who happens to be on the same cruise. Maloney isn’t interested in just getting the money back. Along with the help of the much feared hired hit man Mr. Banjo, as well as the blonde bombshell Penny Lane, Maloney plans on squeezing the money as well as a few vital juices from Otto’s cold, dead corpse. On the other end of the law, the FBI is hot on Maloney’s tail. Special Agents Frank Wallace and Larry Lawrence aren’t sure who this Otto guy is, or how he fits into Maloney’s organization, but they don’t plan on letting either of them get away. Maybe it’s time for the nearly retired Frank to take a much needed cruise to the Bahamas. It’s a comedy noir of hilarious errors as Otto learns that sometimes money does buy happiness.

Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION The purpose of this text is to address one small but important and significant aspect (or process) of making man-made waste disposal more earth-friendly: biosolids composting. Since 1970, much progress has been made in sewage treatment technology. Corrective actions in treating domestic and industrial wastes have advanced to the point and have been underway for a long enough period now so that today one can visit most local lakes and streams and clearly see the lake or river bottom near a shallow shoreline. This, of course, is an example of an environmental improvement that can be readily seen. This visible improvement is also a "predictor" of what the future can hold for present and future generations who respect lakes and streams, and thus the environment. Recent improvements in the water quality of streams and lakes are only a small part of the progress that has been made. Improvements in wastewater technology have also worked to improve the quality of water we use; that is, the water we drink. This last statement may seem strange to some readers. How does wastewater treatment improve the quality of potable water when we do not receive our drinking water from wastewater treatment plant effluent? Effluent from wastewater treatment plants in not normally cross-connected with their municipality's drinking water supply. Many communities draw water from streams and rivers for use in domestic potable water supplies and these same streams and rivers serve as outfalls, normally upstream, for wastewater treatment plant effluent. Communities are growing. Populations within these burgeoning communities are also growing. Along with growth in community size and in population is a corresponding growth in the need for more potable water. Thus, the stream or river that provides the water supply and serves as the outfall for wastewater treatment plant effluent is put under increasing demand for its main product: potable water. Wastewater Biosolids to Compost covers EPA 503 regulations, testing procedures, advancements in odor control, marketing the product, and composting program economics.

Book excerpt: There is a growing need to support undergraduate educators in the development of environmental management educational materials. Recognizing this need, the National Science Foundation funded a College Faculty Workshop on Environmental Management, that was conducted at Utah State University in July and August 1996. The principle objectives of the seminar were (1) to provide a meaningful course which would generate new ideas and innovative educational approaches in the emerging field of environmental management, and (2) to develop an applications-oriented problem workbook which would support undergraduate faculty involvement in the production of course materials. The result of this effort is Environmental Management: Problems and Solutions, an informative text on the essentials of environmental management. More than 200 structured problems presented in the book are meant to elicit a sound understanding of the basics of environmental monitoring, assessment and control. Detailed solutions to each problem, provided with each chapter, will prove useful to both the student and the instructor. This innovative text is a valuable resource for anyone involved in training of engineers and scientists in the field of environmental engineering.

The emphasis is placed on environmental compliance where the goal is the processing of treated biosolids to the production of a waste product (biosolids ash) that has been discarded in the past and to demonstrate that this particular waste byproduct has some value. When biosolids ash is managed for reuse and is not disposed of in the traditional manner, all sides win, including the environment.

He tries to pass for a man fit to work on a logging crew. A spark from a brush fire ignites the wooden building. The office and much of the city are incinerated. Noble too is caught in the fire. More than a hundred years later, while on vacation in Mexico, Sean Hughes finds a message on the beach. Back in Vancouver, the messages continue and become more ominous. Sean is convinced that his apartment is haunted by malevolent spirits. Mandy, his neighbor, is certain that the messages are a plea for help. Sean and Mandy’s determination to decipher the messages leads to questions of trust and betrayal, loneliness and forgiveness. The answers they find will challenge them to believe that hope can outlast death.
