Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvest Scenes of the World During the first half of the nineteenth century the American farmer was compelled to perform nearly all of his labor by hand. Practically the only implements drawn by horses in those days were the plow and the harrow. Wheat was sown broadcast by hand then, as in Bible times, and covered with a harrow, while corn was dropped in furrows by hand and covered with the hoe. Harvesting, the most important of all farm work, was still done with the reaping hook which had remained unchanged since the earliest known reference to the growing of cereals. Later, the hand cradle in many instances replaced the reaping hook, but still the labor of harvest was too slow. 5 The invention of the reaping machine in 83 I, and the consequent development of the modern farm machine industry, made it possible for the United States to advance from a low rank among nations to the very for front among the world's greatest powers. Book excerpt: Over seventy-five salad recipes, with contributions and interviews by artists & creatives like William Wegman, Tauba Auerbach, Laurie Anderson, and Alice Waters. Julia Sherman loves salad. In the book named for her popular blog, Sherman encourages her readers to consider salad an everyday indulgence that can include cocktails, soups, family style brunch dishes, and dinner-party entrées. Every part of the meal is reimagined with a fresh, vegetable obsessed perspective. This compendium of savory recipes will tempt readers in search of diverse offerings from light to hearty organized by season. Recipes include: Collard Chiffonade Salad with Roasted Garlic Dressing and Crouton Crumble Heirloom Tomatoes with Crunchy Polenta Croutons Flank Steak and Bean Sprouts with Miso-Kimchi Dressing Grilled Hearts of Palm with Mint and Triple Citrus Golden Crispy Lotus Root with Asian Pear and Yuzu Dressing Shaved Cauliflower and Candy Cane Beet Salad with Seared Arctic Char Curly Carrots with Candied Cumin And many more The recipes, while not exclusively vegetarian, are vegetable-forward and focused on high-quality seasonal produce. Sherman also includes insider tips on pantry staples and growing your own salad garden of herbs and greens. Salad—with its infinite possibilities—is a game of endless combinations, not stifling rules. And with that in mind, Salad for President offers a window into how artists approach preparing their favorite dishes. She visits sculptors, painters, photographers, and musicians in their homes and gardens, interviewing and photographing them as they cook. Utterly unique in its look into the worlds of food, art, and everyday practices, Salad for President is at once a practical resource for healthy, satisfying recipes and an inspiring look at creativity. Praise for Salad for President “Part relational art, part self-discovery, Salad for President turns our notion of ‘salad’ on its head in a funny, beautiful, and most personal way.” ?Bon Appétit “Makes even the most unrepentant meat eater consider their leafy greens; it is a decidedly bitter, yet delicious, pill to swallow.” —John Martin, Munchies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Reaper adopts a network approach to account for the international diffusion of harvesting technology from North America, from the invention of the reaper through to the formation of a dominant transnational corporation, International Harvester. Much previous historical research into industrial networks focuses on industrial districts within metropolitan centres, but by focusing on harvesting - a typically rural technology - this book is able to analyse the spread of technological knowledge through a series of local networks and across national boundaries. In doing so it argues that the industry developed through a relatively stable stage from the 1850s into the 1890s, during which time many firms shared knowledge within and outside the US through patent licensing, to spread the diffusion of the American style of machines to establishments located around the industrial world. This positive cooperation was further enhanced through sales networks that appear to be early expressions of managerial firms. The book also reinterprets the rise of giant corporations, especially International Harvester Corporation (IHC), arguing that mass production was achieved in Chicago in the 1880s, where unprecedented urban growth made possible a break with the constraints felt elsewhere in the dispersed production system. It unleashed an unchecked competitive market economy with destructive tendencies throughout the transnational 'American reaper' networks; a previously stable and expanding production system. This is significant because the rise of corporate capital in this industry is usually explained as an outworking of national natural advantage, as an ingenious harnessing of science and technology to solve production problems, and as a rational solution to the problems associated with the worst forms of unregulated competition that emerged as independent firms developed from small-scale, artisanal production to large-scale manufacturers, on their own and within the separate and isolated US economy. The first study dedicated to the development and diffusion of American harvesting machine technology, this book will appeal to scholars from a diverse range of fields, including economic history, business history, the history of knowledge transfer, historical geography and economic geography.

Book excerpt: Short stories about the deep past and those who lived through millennia of exploration, hardship, and uncertainty during the evolution of farming. Winner of the 2019 Nautilus Book Award, Multicultural and Indigenous “Swigart is to be congratulated for giving us a series of connected short stories that are both entertaining and educational. The book is accurately grounded in archaeological facts, and its individual stories are thoroughly believable. Its particular format should be emulated by all those wishing to blend fact and fiction, not just as entertainment but as education, too.”—Journal of Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology and Heritage Studies In unforgettable stories of the human journey, a combination of compelling storytelling and well-researched archaeology underscore an excavation into the deep past of human development and its consequences. Through a first encounter between a Neanderthal woman and the Modern Human to the emergence and destruction of the world’s first cities, Mixed Harvest tells the tale of the Neolithic Revolution, also called the (First) Agricultural Revolution, the most significant event since modern humans emerged. Rob Swigart’s latest work humanizes the rapid transition to agriculture and pastoralism with a grounding in the archaeological record. From the introduction: In the space of a few thousand years agriculture dominated the earth. We live with it all around us. History began, cities soared, the landscape was crisscrossed with roads.... Each story is prefaced by a short introduction and followed by some context in order to stitch the narrative together. Some stories are linked, but most are independent. The stories are gathered into three chapters: “Shelter,” “House,” and “Home.” These represent a progression in where we lived, a series of transformations in technology and consciousness.
