Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to abstract algebraic geometry, with the only prerequisites being results from commutative algebra, which are stated as needed, and some elementary topology. More than 400 exercises distributed throughout the book offer specific examples as well as more specialised topics not treated in the main text, while three appendices present brief accounts of some areas of current research. This book can thus be used as textbook for an introductory course in algebraic geometry following a basic graduate course in algebra. Robin Hartshorne studied algebraic geometry with Oscar Zariski and David Mumford at Harvard, and with J.-P. Serre and A. Grothendieck in Paris. He is the author of "Residues and Duality", "Foundations of Projective Geometry", "Ample Subvarieties of Algebraic Varieties", and numerous research titles.

Throughout the centuries some of the world's most brilliant philosophers and theologians have held and perpetuated six beliefs that give the word God a meaning untrue to its import in sacred writings or in active religious devotion: God is absolutely perfect and therefore unchangeable, 2.omnipotence, 3.omniscience, 4.God's unsympathetic goodness, 5.immortality as a career after death, and 6.revelation as infalliable. Charles Hartshorne deals with these six theological mistakes from the standpoint of his process theology. Hartshorne says, "The book is unacademic in so far as I am capable of being that." Only a master like Hartshorne could present such sophisticated ideas so simply. This book offers an option for religious belief not heretofore available to lay people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic problem of deformation theory in algebraic geometry involves watching a small deformation of one member of a family of objects, such as varieties, or subschemes in a fixed space, or vector bundles on a fixed scheme. In this new book, Robin Hartshorne studies first what happens over small infinitesimal deformations, and then gradually builds up to more global situations, using methods pioneered by Kodaira and Spencer in the complex analytic case, and adapted and expanded in algebraic geometry by Grothendieck. The author includes numerous exercises, as well as important examples illustrating various aspects of the theory. This text is based on a graduate course taught by the author at the University of California, Berkeley.

Demonstrating his thesis from many points of view (ontological, cosmological, teleological, moral, aesthetic, etc.), Viney deftly illustrates Hartshorne's belief that any one argument for God is inconclusive, but that many woven together make up a convincing interpretative expression of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a general introduction to the theory of schemes, followed by applications to arithmetic surfaces and to the theory of reduction of algebraic curves. The first part introduces basic objects such as schemes, morphisms, base change, local properties (normality, regularity, Zariski's Main Theorem). This is followed by the more global aspect: coherent sheaves and a finiteness theorem for their cohomology groups. Then follows a chapter on sheaves of differentials, dualizing sheaves, and Grothendieck's duality theory. The first part ends with the theorem of Riemann-Roch and its application to the study of smooth projective curves over a field. Singular curves are treated through a detailed study of the Picard group. The second part starts with blowing-ups and desingularisation (embedded or not) of fibered surfaces over a Dedekind ring that leads on to intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. Castelnuovo's criterion is proved and also the existence of the minimal regular model. This leads to the study of reduction of algebraic curves. The case of elliptic curves is studied in detail. The book concludes with the funadmental theorem of stable reduction of Deligne-Mumford. The book is essentially self-contained, including the necessary material on commutative algebra. The prerequisites are therefore few, and the book should suit a graduate student. It contains many examples and nearly 600 exercises.

Book excerpt: "The authors examine how social studies teachers can use web 2.0 tools to augment instruction in their classrooms, using a pedagogical framework SOURCES to enable students to engage in historical inquiry with primary sources in an informed and scaffolded fashion. SOURCES is an acronym to identify the steps ofhistorical inquiry: Scrutinizing the fundamental sources; organizing thoughts; understanding the context; reading between the lines; corroborating and refuting; establishing a plausible narrative; summarizing final thoughts. The use of Web 2.0 tools, such as social networks and blogs, are omnipresent among students, and their integration into the learning experience is intended to increase motivation, collaboration, and visualization of student work, as well as "providing opportunities and venues for sharing work and solutions globally." Per the authors, "this book will provide a detailed collection and rationale for the implementation of a wide array of emerging technological applications into the teaching and learning process, their role in supporting each phase of the SOURCES pedagogical framework, and varied examples of the merging of technological and pedagogical applications in the social studies classroom""--

Book excerpt: When Kate Vavasour wakes in the hospital, she remembers nothing of the family gathered around her, or of her life before the accident. The doctors diagnose post-traumatic amnesia and say the memories should start returning. Which they do--but these memories are not hers. They belong to Isabel Vavasour, who lived and died at Askerby Hall more than 400 years earlier. Returning to Askerby Hall to recuperate, Kate finds herself in a house full of shadows and suspicions. But before she can uncover the mysteries of the present, she must first discover the truth about the past. Was Isabel's madness real, or was her mistake trusting the one person she thought would never betray her?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to Hartshorne's contributions to contemporary philosophy and theology. It also covers some of the current controversies in philosophy and theology that Hartshorne's contributions have generated. The opening chapter is a lucid and penetrating introduction to Hartshorne's thought. Some of the following chapters break new ground on issues that have concerned Hartshorne throughout his career: the nature and methods of metaphysics, the existence and nature of God, and the place of religion and metaphysics in the modern world. Many chapters survey the current state of controversies on those topics. Other chapters relate Hartshorne's work to other traditions and to trends in contemporary philosophy--to postmodernism, classical Western theism, Indian philosophy, analytical philosophy, and American pragmatism.
