Book excerpt: S2The Forest Service hardwood tree grades for factory lumber are described, and lumber grade yields for 111 species are presented. The yields, expressed in board feet, are based on equations in which dbh2 and merchantable height were used as independent variables. Actual board-foot volumes by lumber grade served as dependent variables. Species included are yellow and paper birch, red and sugar maple, yellow-poplar, black cherry, basswood, and northern red, black, white, and chestnut oak. S3`
Book Synopsis Hardwood Log Grades and Lumber Grade Yields for Factory Lumber Logs by :
Download or read book Hardwood Log Grades and Lumber Grade Yields for Factory Lumber Logs written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USDA Forest Service standard grades for hardwood factory lumber logs are described, and lumber grade yields for 16 species and 2 species groups are presented by log grade and log diameter. The grades enable foresters, log buyers, and log sellers to select and grade those logs suitable for conversion into standard factory grade lumber. By using the appropriate lumber grade yields, log buyers and sellers can appraise the logs in terms of expected lumber grade volume and value.
Book Synopsis Drying Hardwood Lumber by : Joseph Denig
Download or read book Drying Hardwood Lumber written by Joseph Denig and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drying Hardwood Lumber focuses on common methods for drying lumber of different thickness, with minimal drying defects, for high quality applications. This manual also includes predrying treatments that, when part of an overall quality-oriented drying system, reduce defects and improve drying quality, especially of oak lumber. Special attention is given to drying white wood, such as hard maple and ash, without sticker shadow or other discoloration. Several special drying methods, such as solar drying, are described, and proper techniques for storing dried lumber are discussed. Suggestions are provided for ways to economize on drying costs by reducing drying time and energy demands when feasible. Each chapter is accompanied by a list of references. Some references are cited in the chapter; others are listed as additional sources of information.

Book Synopsis 1992 Data Bank for Red Oak Lumber by : Charles J. Gatchell
Download or read book 1992 Data Bank for Red Oak Lumber written by Charles J. Gatchell and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 Data Bank for Red Oak Lumber is a collection of fully described FAS, Selects, No. 1 Common, and No. 2A Common boards (a total of 1,578 at present). The data bank has two unique features to aid in sample selection. The first feature is the double grading of FAS, No. 1 Common, and No. 2A Common boards to reflect the surface area in grading cuttings when grading with standard National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) procedures and when using as many grading cuttings as possible under NHLA rules. The latter gives a more accurate predictor of the potential utility of the board. The second feature is the inclusion of quality levels for the No. 1 Common and No. 2A Common boards. Written for researchers and industrial decision makers who may have only a limited knowledge of the NHLA grades, the data bank contains a limited description of factors affecting the grades. Included are a description of Realistic Grading System (ReGS), the computer program for grading lumber; some reasons why lumber users who buy kiln dried lumber may want to specify the Special Kiln Dried Rule; the effect of kiln-drying on soundness of knots; and the surprising finding that relatively few No. 1 Common and No. 2A Common boards contain any pith at all.
