Book Synopsis Running with the Firm by : James Bannon
Download or read book Running with the Firm written by James Bannon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Of course I'm a f**king hooligan, you pr**k. I am a hooligan...there I've said it...I'm a hooligan. And, do you know why? Because that's my f**king job.' In 1995, a film called I.D., about an ambitious young copper who was sent undercover to track down the ‘generals’ of a football hooligan gang, achieved cult status for its sheer brutality and unsettling insight into the dark and often bloody side of the so-called beautiful game. The film was so shocking it was hard to believe the mindless events that took place could ever happen in the real world. Well, believe it now... Almost twenty years on, the man behind the film has explosively revealed that the script was largely a true story. That man, James Bannon, was the ambitious undercover cop. The football club was Millwall F.C. and the gang that he infiltrated was The Bushwackers, among the most brutal and fearless in English football. In Running with the Firm, Bannon shares his intense and dangerous journey into the underworld of football hooliganism where sickening levels of violence prevail over anything else. He introduces you to the hardest thugs from football’s most notorious gangs, tells all about the secret and almost comical police operations that were meant to bring them down, and, how once you’re on the inside, getting out from the mob proves to be the biggest mission of all. A disturbing but compelling read, this is the book that proves fact really is stranger than fiction.
Download or read book Girlish written by Lara Lillibridge and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***Finalist, 2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards, LGBT Adult Nonfiction category*** ***Award-Winning Finalist, 2018 Best Book Awards sponsored by American Book Fest, LGBTQ Non-Fiction category*** An honest, unfiltered memoir about a girl with an unconventional family. “The story everyone wants to hear isn’t the story I want to tell.” Lara Lillibridge grew up with two moms—an experience that shaped and scarred her at the same time. Told from the perspective of “Girl,” Lillibridge’s memoir is the no-holds-barred account of childhood in an atypical household. Personally less concerned with her mother’s sexuality and more with how she fits into a world both disturbed and obsessed with it, Girl finds that, in other people’s eyes, “The most interesting thing about me is not about me at all; it is about my parents.” It won’t be long before readers realize that “unconventional” barely scratches the surface. In the early years, Girl’s feminist mother reluctantly allows her to play with her favorite Barbies while her stepmother refuses to comfort her when she wakes up from nightmares. She goes skinny dipping on family vacations in upstate New York and kisses all the boys at church. Girl and her brother travel four thousand miles—unaccompanied—to visit their father in rural Alaska, where they sleep in a locked cabin without running water, telephone, or electricity. Raised to be a free spirit by norm-defying parents, Girl has to define her own boundaries as she tries to fit into heteronormative suburban life, all while navigating her mother’s expectations, her stepmother’s mental illness, and her father’s serial divorces. Lillibridge bravely tells her own story and offers a unique perspective. At times humorous and pithy while cringe-worthy and heartbreaking at others, Girlish is a human story that challenges readers to reevaluate their own lives and motivations.

Book Synopsis Fucking Good Manners by : Simon Griffin
Download or read book Fucking Good Manners written by Simon Griffin and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book about how to be posh. We have some slightly bigger issues to deal with these days. We've all got a million things to do and are constantly connected to millions of other people all doing a million other things, so the faster we get things done the better, right? Wrong. Among all the busyness and confusion it seems we've forgotten a few of the basics in life, like the ability to treat one another with respect, dignity and some fucking good manners. Enter Simon Griffin, author of Fucking Apostrophes. From the entry-level stuff like saying please, thank you and sorry; manspreading on public transport and double-lane queuing at airports, to those that require just a little bit more thought, such as correct urinal protocol in public toilets, making tea rounds in the office and online public displays of affection, Simon imparts rules and advice to living life in a way that makes it just a bit better for everyone. With some liberal use of rude words thrown in to emphasise the point. With chapters on driving, social media, the environment, getting on with your neighbours, and the best manners for a trip to the cinema, this is the perfect gift for a manners enthusiast, or those in need of a gentle (but sweary) nudge in the right direction.

Book Synopsis Hyperbole and a Half by : Allie Brosh

FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book excerpt: If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re not spending it right. If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re not spending it right. Two rising stars in behavioral science explain how money can buy happiness—if you follow five core principles of smarter spending. Happy Money offers a tour of new research on the science of spending. Most people recognize that they need professional advice on how to earn, save, and invest their money. When it comes to spending that money, most people just follow their intuitions. But scientific research shows that those intuitions are often wrong. Happy Money explains why you can get more happiness for your money by following five principles, from choosing experiences over stuff to spending money on others. And the five principles can be used not only by individuals but by companies seeking to create happier employees and provide “happier products” to their customers. Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton show how companies from Google to Pepsi to Crate & Barrel have put these ideas into action. Along the way, the authors describe new research that reveals that luxury cars often provide no more pleasure than economy models, that commercials can actually enhance the enjoyment of watching television, and that residents of many cities frequently miss out on inexpensive pleasures in their hometowns. By the end of this book, readers will ask themselves one simple question whenever they reach for their wallets: Am I getting the biggest happiness bang for my buck?
Book Synopsis The V-Files by : Nelson Onit Vazqueztell
Download or read book The V-Files written by Nelson Onit Vazqueztell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-05-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In becoming a poet, Ive noticed that I now pay strict attention to every detail around me. I used to take my surroundings for granted, and I didnt always pay close attention to everything there was to notice. Welcome! Welcome once again to another book of poetry and to my wild, creative and imaginative mind. In this second poetry book I hope you find the stories much more interesting, the comedy much more refreshing and that the romance takes you to a few nostalgic moments of your own. You may notice that this second collection of my work is a little different to my first, TRUTH, COMEDY & POETRY for ALL, in that there are not as many love poems. This time around, I wanted to express a little more of my other sides instead of just the romance. So I decided, sure, there is still going to be plenty of heart felt tales in here, but there will be more emphasis on the serious and comic aspects this time around. I also made most of the poems much, much shorter. I wanted to make sure there wouldnt be constant thoughts of, "Gee, this poem is a little too long and therefore I am uncontrollably daydreaming due to the length of this study-hall of a poem." Then again, according to my test group, it seems that the long stories here are pretty good. But you can be the judge of that. The reason I wrote my first book was to get others into reading poetry and writing some of their own. However, the reason I wanted to write this second book was because I wanted to know that if I were to die tomorrow, I would leave something behind that could still make people smile or think. I wanted to create something that would last and be appreciated for generations to come. I wanted to leave behind a mark of my existence. And so here is my book. If you havent read my first book, well, I want to start over with a "Hello." I am a fairly new poet and writer who will either make you think, laugh or say, "My God this romantic material is going to come in handy for the next time I meet someone I like." Whatever the scenario, I just want to remind everyone that we all have three sides to us. We may not show all of them every day, but within all of us exists a serious side, a humorous side and a romantic side. In both of my poetry books I show my different characters, and then some. Especially, in THE V-FILES.
