Book Synopsis An Angel's View by : Reginald E. Hicks
Download or read book An Angel's View written by Reginald E. Hicks and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages and stages of American history, grandmothers have been the guardians of the generations, the dispensers of wisdom, the instillers of pride and dignity, the conveyors of important religious values, the financial and emotional supporters of the family during times of need, and the promoters of cultural standards and traditions. From Maya Angelou to Martin Luther King Jr. to Oprah Winfrey, the success of many African Americans can be traced back to the love and support of a grandmother. Author Reginald E. Hicks is no exception. For Hicks, An Angel's View began as a labor of love to chronicle the life of his own beloved grandmother, from her birth on the family farm in rural New Kent County, Virginia in 1923; through her personal, social, and political trials and tribulations; to her quickly approaching eighty-ninth birthday. However, his humble commemoration eventually blossomed into an emotional story of love, betrayal, triumph, and tragedy embedded in a riveting and dynamic Southern history. Through this exceptional work, Hicks makes a unique and valuable contribution to his family and to the world of black literature.
Book Synopsis Behind a Tiny Story by : Myrna Barinaga
Download or read book Behind a Tiny Story written by Myrna Barinaga and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What started as a tiny story triggered memories of a lifetime. This is a story of a family’s struggle and survival of the brutal Japanese-American War. I was one of eight children in that family, walking for days through the jungle for safety and living on prayers. Thankfully, the war ended with all of us in the family alive and together. Marriage and childbearing brought four children, two with very special needs. Searching for help led us to come to America. I did not intend to make my obstacles and struggles in life the focus of my story. However, I would like to direct the reader to the power of faith and prayer and the strength and perseverance derived from allowing God to guide and lead me in my life’s journey. With all that life has offered me, “my heart, awaking, cries, ‘May Jesus Christ be praised!’” When Morning Gilds the Skies When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries, May Jesus Christ be praised! Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair, May Jesus Christ be praised! (German hymn c. 1800, translated by Edward Caswall, 1814–1878)

Download or read book Aurorae written by D. J. Hoffman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never thought that I would spend my retirement writing novels. Then again I never planned on hearing a voice, not my own, inside my head. At my age many of my friends think I am going senile, but they are wrong! So this sixty something year old is in front of an old typewriter and waiting. Waiting to hear the rest of this story, but it has been months of silence. I am beginning to believe that it is over and the voice is truly gone. Therefore will not be telling their life story and perhaps that is for the best. Everyone knows that I can't type well and my grammar is terrible! That doesn't matter and what does is letting you know this biography! Perhaps I should just put this old typewriter back in its case. I will spend last of my years wondering before I also get put in a case. I hope my porcelain farm animals find a good home when I'm gone. WHAT? Okay The voice is back, but not as loud and different than before. But I am pleased to hear it again and hope my arthritis doesn't act up. I will manage the pain of typing many pages and finally get use to it. I should buy one of those computers everyone is using these days. I understand it could even help with my grammar, but I don't know? What? You are right and I am ranting on. But how should I begin this novel and it can't be at the beginning? What? Of course and why wouldn't it? It will start where I left off from my writings of Devan. This novel is named Aurorae and I beg forgiveness for my mistakes! Thank you Morgan E. Wentworth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Goetzfridt’s work demonstrates the dynamics of history, each generation considering past events in light of current realities and contemporary understandings of the world. This volume, therefore, is important not simply because it provides us with an invaluable and substantial fount of references that will be supremely useful to teachers, scholars, and all enthusiasts of Mariana Islands history. Its importance lies also in its packaging as a resource for current and future generations to understand the changing face and contested space of Guam history." —from the Foreword by Anne Perez Hattori Blending bibliographic integrity with absorbing essays on a wide range of historical interpretations, Nicholas Goetzfridt offers a new approach to the history of Guam. Here is a treasure trove of ideas, historiographies, and opportunities that allows readers to reassess previously held notions and conclusions about Guam’s past and the heritage of the indigenous Chamorro people. Particular attention is given to Chamorro perspectives and the impact of more than four hundred years of colonial presences on Micronesia’s largest island. Extensive cross-references and generous but targeted samples of historical narratives compliment the bibliographic essays. Detailed Name and Subject Indexes to the book’s 326 entries cover accounts and interpretations of the island from Ferdinand Magellan’s "discovery" of Guahan ("Guam" in the Chamorro language) in 1521 to recent events, including the Japanese occupation and the American liberation of Guam in 1944. The indexes enable easy and extensive access to a bounty of information. The Place Index contains both large and localized geographic realms that are placed vividly in the context of these histories. An insightful Foreword by Chamorro scholar Anne Perez Hattori is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION Named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, Bustle, and Electric Literature “There was a time I would have called Lisa Ko’s novel beautifully written, ambitious, and moving, and all of that is true, but it’s more than that now: if you want to understand a forgotten and essential part of the world we live in, The Leavers is required reading.” —Ann Patchett, author of Commonwealth Lisa Ko’s powerful debut, The Leavers, is the winner of the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Fiction, awarded by Barbara Kingsolver for a novel that addresses issues of social justice. One morning, Deming Guo’s mother, Polly, an undocumented Chinese immigrant, goes to her job at a nail salon—and never comes home. No one can find any trace of her. With his mother gone, eleven-year-old Deming is left mystified and bereft. Eventually adopted by a pair of well-meaning white professors, Deming is moved from the Bronx to a small town upstate and renamed Daniel Wilkinson. But far from all he’s ever known, Daniel struggles to reconcile his adoptive parents’ desire that he assimilate with his memories of his mother and the community he left behind. Told from the perspective of both Daniel—as he grows into a directionless young man—and Polly, Ko’s novel gives us one of fiction’s most singular mothers. Loving and selfish, determined and frightened, Polly is forced to make one heartwrenching choice after another. Set in New York and China, The Leavers is a vivid examination of borders and belonging. It’s a moving story of how a boy comes into his own when everything he loves is taken away, and how a mother learns to live with the mistakes of the past.

Download or read book Frida Kahlo written by María Hesse and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important artists of the twentieth century and an icon of courageous womanhood, Frida Kahlo lives on in the public imagination, where her popularity shows no signs of waning. She is renowned for both her paintings and her personal story, which were equally filled with pain and anguish, celebration and life. Thousands of words, including her own, have been written about Kahlo, but only one previous biography has recorded her fascinating, difficult life. Frida Kahlo by María Hesse offers a highly unique way of getting to know the artist by presenting her life in graphic novel form, with striking illustrations that reimagine many of Kahlo’s famous paintings. Originally published in Spanish in 2016, Frida Kahlo has already found an enthusiastic audience in the Spanish-speaking world, with some 20,000 copies sold in just a few months. This translation introduces English-language readers to Kahlo’s life, from her childhood and the traumatic accident that would change her life and her artwork, to her complicated love for Diego Rivera and the fierce determination that drove her to become a major artist in her own right. María Hesse tells the story in a first-person narrative, which captures both the depths of Frida’s suffering and her passion for art and life.

Book Synopsis The Starday Story by : Nathan D. Gibson
Download or read book The Starday Story written by Nathan D. Gibson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association of Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence Best Research in Record Labels–Certificate of Merit (2012) The Starday Story: The House That Country Music Built is the first book entirely dedicated to one of the most influential music labels of the twentieth century. In addition to creating the largest bluegrass catalogue throughout the 1950s and '60s, Starday was also known for its legendary rockabilly catalogue, an extensive Texas honky-tonk outpouring, classic gospel and sacred recordings, and as a Nashville independent powerhouse studio and label. Written with label president and co-founder Don Pierce, this book traces the label's origins in 1953 through the 1968 Starday-King merger. Interviews with artists and their families, employees, and Pierce contribute to the stories behind famous hit songs, including "Y'all Come," "A Satisfied Mind," "Why Baby Why," "Giddy-up Go," "Alabam," and many others. Gibson's research and interviews also shed new light on the musical careers of George Jones, Arlie Duff, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, the Stanley Brothers, Cowboy Copas, Red Sovine, and countless other Starday artists. Conversations with the children of Pappy Daily and Jack Starns provide a unique perspective on the early days of Starday, and extensive interviews with Pierce offer an insider glance at the country music industry during its golden era. Weathering through the storm of rock and roll and, later, the Nashville Sound, Starday was a home to traditional country musicians and became one of the most successful independent labels in American history. Ultimately, The Starday Story is the definitive record of a country music label that played an integral role in preserving our nation's musical heritage.
