Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book-size article is dedicated to the numerical simulation of unsteady incompressible viscous flow modelled by the Navier-Stokes equations, or by non-Newtonian variants of them. In order to achieve this goal a methodology has been developed based on four key tools. Time discretization by operator-splitting schemes such as Peaceman-Rachford's, Douglas Rachford's, Marchuk-Yanenko's, Strang's symmetrized, and the so-called theta-scheme introduced by the author in the mid-1980s. Projection methods (in L2 or H1) for the treatment of the incompressibility condition div u = 0. Treatment of the advection by: either a centered scheme leading to linear or nonlinear advection-diffusion problems solved by least squares/conjugate gradient algorithms, or to a linear wave-like equation well suited to finite element-based solution methods. Space approximation by finite element methods such as Hood-Taylor and Bercovier-Pironneau, which are relatively easy to implement. conjugate gradient algorithms, least-squares methods for boundary-value problems which are not equivalent to problems of the calculus of variations, Uzawa-type algorithms for the solution of saddle-point problems, embedding/fictitious domain methods for the solution of elliptic and parabolic problems. In fact many computational methods discussed in this article also apply to non-CFD problems although they were mostly designed for the solution of flow problems. Among the topics covered are: the direct numerical simulation of particulate flow; computational methods for flow control; splitting methods for viso-plastic flow a la Bingham; and more. It should also be mentioned that most methods discussed in this article are illustrated by the results of numerical experiments, including the simulation of three-dimensional flow. easy to implement - as is demonstrated by the fact that several practitioners in various institutions have been able to use them ab initio for the solution of complicated flow (and other) problems.

Book excerpt: These proceedings collect the major part of the lectures given at ENU MATH2003, the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Ad vanced Applications, held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 18 August to 22 August, 2003. The importance of numerical and computational mathematics and sci entific computing is permanently growing. There is an increasing number of different research areas, where numerical simulation is necessary. Let us men tion fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, electromagnetism, phase transi tion, cosmology, medicine, economics, finance, etc. The success of applications of numerical methods is conditioned by changing its basic instruments and looking for new appropriate techniques adapted to new problems as well as new computer architectures. The ENUMATH conferences were established in order to provide a fo rum for discussion of current topics of numerical mathematics. They seek to convene leading experts and young scientists with special emphasis on con tributions from Europe. Recent results and new trends are discussed in the analysis of numerical algorithms as well as in their applications to challenging scientific and industrial problems. The first ENUMATH conference was organized in Paris in 1995, then the series continued by the conferences in Heidelberg 1997, Jyvaskyla 1999 and Ischia Porto 2001. It was a great pleasure and honour for the Czech numerical community that it was decided at Ischia Porto to organize the ENUMATH2003 in Prague. It was the first time when this conference crossed the former Iron Courtain and was organized in a postsocialist country.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics by : Dale R. Durran
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics written by Dale R. Durran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics." Book Synopsis Isogeometric analysis and hierarchical refinement for multi-field contact problems by : Dittmann, Maik
Download or read book Isogeometric analysis and hierarchical refinement for multi-field contact problems written by Dittmann, Maik and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work deals with multi-field contact problems in the context of IGA. In particular, a thermomechanical as well as a fracture mechanical system is considered, where novel formulations are introduced for both. The corresponding discrete contact formulations are based on a variationally consistent mortar approach adapted for NURBS discretized and hierarchical refined surfaces. Finally, the capabilities of the proposed framework are demonstrated within numerous numerical examples.
Book Synopsis Fundamental Trends In Fluid-structure Interaction by : Giovanni Paolo Galdi
Download or read book Fundamental Trends In Fluid-structure Interaction written by Giovanni Paolo Galdi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a fluid with a solid body is a widespread phenomenon in nature, occurring at different scales and different applied disciplines. Interestingly enough, even though the mathematical theory of the motion of bodies in a liquid is one of the oldest and most classical problems in fluid mechanics, mathematicians have, only very recently, become interested in a systematic study of the basic problems related to fluid-structure interaction, from both analytical and numerical viewpoints.Fundamental Trends in Fluid-Structure Interaction is a unique collection of important papers written by world-renowned experts aimed at furnishing the highest level of development in several significant areas of fluid-structure interactions. The contributions cover several aspects of this discipline, from mathematical analysis, numerical simulation and modeling viewpoints, including motion of rigid and elastic bodies in a viscous liquid, particulate flow and hemodynamic.
Book Synopsis Applications of Differential-Algebraic Equations: Examples and Benchmarks by : Stephen Campbell
Download or read book Applications of Differential-Algebraic Equations: Examples and Benchmarks written by Stephen Campbell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume encompasses prototypical, innovative and emerging examples and benchmarks of Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAEs) and their applications, such as electrical networks, chemical reactors, multibody systems, and multiphysics models, to name but a few. Each article begins with an exposition of modelling, explaining whether the model is prototypical and for which applications it is used. This is followed by a mathematical analysis, and if appropriate, a discussion of the numerical aspects including simulation. Additionally, benchmark examples are included throughout the text. Mathematicians, engineers, and other scientists, working in both academia and industry either on differential-algebraic equations and systems or on problems where the tools and insight provided by differential-algebraic equations could be useful, would find this book resourceful.
