Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent and child sexuality is studied by developmental psychologists from a research perspective and is of interest to forensic psychologists dealing with abuse and custody issues as well as rape cases. In many cases, it is of interest whether the child in question was sexually active to understand the extent to which an underage minor might have voluntarily participated in sexual activity as opposed to having been coerced. Previously, researchers interested in the applications of their research needed to look to separate books, and forensic specialists needed to look to development books to find the information they may have needed. This handbook provides both audiences with the related information they need. Encompasses normative behavior and clinical disorders in one source Applies the information on development and behavior to forensic issues Provides treatment information on sexual disorders in children Provides information on children and adolescents in one volume

Book excerpt: Originally published in 2006, this authoritative clinical handbook provides a detailed overview of the main disorders encountered by child and adolescent psychiatrists in clinical practice, ranging from eating, sleep and affective disorders to substance abuse, gender identity disorder and sexual abuse. The approach is evidence based and emphasis is on good clinical practice and quality control of patient care. In contrast to other books in the field, the authors' intention is not to cover exhaustively all the relevant science, but rather to present in condensed form any research findings that are significant for clinical practice. For coherence, each chapter is constructed in the same way: introduction, definition and classification, epidemiology, the clinical picture, aetiology, treatment and outcome. The disorders covered are based on the ICD- 10 and DSM-IV classifications, and appendices include documents for assessment of intervention planning and evaluation.

Book excerpt: In the past few years, there has been a major shift in the mental health care of child and adolescents from inpatient care to non-hospital community ambulatory settings. Economic pressures have primarily driven this change in service delivery. Insurance companies and managed care organizations have not only restricted access to hospitalization and limited length of stays but additionally have sharply reduced reimbursements for treatments. State and federal policies for inpatient treatment and reimbursement have followed similar trends. As a result, mental health planners have attempted to develop programs to deal with this trend of restricted inpatient care shifting treatment of children and adolescents to home and community settings. Some of these new programs are well planned and others are hastily planned and implemented. The pitfall to this community approach is that there is a population of chronically disturbed children and adolescents, and highly stressed parents often lacking adequate personal and family resource who may not respond to these new less restrictive, less costly community approaches which potentially may lead to an unsafe and dangerous situation for the child, adolescent, family and the community. With this in mind, the purpose of this book is to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding child and adolescent outpatient, day treatment and community psychiatry. The emphasis of this book is to provide practical knowledge through clinical case illustrations and to explain various strategies in a detailed fashion.
