Book excerpt: "Human sexuality counseling is an area rarely addressed directly in either the human sexuality literature or the professional counseling literature. Human sexuality textbooks generally consist of the fundamentals of sexuality, specifically the physiological aspects. The standards of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) now include specific standards that address the need for educating counseling students about human sexuality counseling, specifically in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (Section 5 D.2.m), Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling (Section 5. F. 2.e.) and Rehabilitation Counseling (Section 5 H.2.h). Further, there is a belief by some that "information is enough." According to this approach, all that needs to be covered in sex education classes in secondary schools is basic and introductory facts and data. That approach may then carry over through a counseling student's undergraduate coursework too. By the time that the counseling student reaches graduate school, they too may have integrated the belief that "information is enough" into their own belief system. Researchers have found, however, time and time again that training in sexuality-related pathology is too limited and that "information" alone is not enough in terms of which topics are addressed in counseling related to sexuality (Blount et al., 2017)"--

The work reflects the field's growing sophistication about sexual disorders and their therapies. The scope has been expanded to keep pace with new literature and research in the field, and eight additional chapters have been added. New topics include the politics of diagnosis, persistent genital arousal, asexuality, post orgasm illness, scientific findings concerning origin of orientation, and partnering with the pharmaceutical industry. Easily accessible, the Handbook is divided into sections that touch on fundamental knowledge and skills; treatment; men’s major sexual concerns; women’s major sexual concerns; problems common to both genders; the diversity of sexual lives; and future and trending topics. Written in a personal, supervisory style, the book will help new therapists anticipate clinical contingencies and help experienced therapists refine their thinking and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is it timely to publish a synthesis of previously published and original materials from a specific discipline? I believe it to be timely when one has a sufficient amount of high-quality material covering the critical areas of that topic, when the previously published material is scattered over a wide range of journals and books, and when there is no single book that synthesizes the discipline. The treatment of sexual dysfunction emerged to the front lines of health delivery only during the past decade with the pioneering work of William Masters and Virginia Johnson. In spite of the rash of sex clinics and sex therapists that followed, preciously little solid research has been conducted on the various strategies of therapy, the means of assessing complex interpersonal sexual relation ships, and the manner by which clinical change is objectively assessed. No one reader can keep pace with the multitude of jounials that publish key material by sophisticated investigators. And no one investigator can cover these salient areas alone with his or her original work in a single volume. The critical papers have now been written. Ten were written specifically for this volume and thirty-three have previously appeared. This volume laces them together into a coherent pattern. Thus, the time for a synthesis in sexual dysfunction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The curriculum provides a vision for chemical dependency treatment I have attempted to address for many years. This looks like an approach that finally meets this need." --Eli Coleman, PhD, Director of the Program in Human Sexuality University of Minnesota The ideal of successful treatment is to maintain abstinence for the rest of the addict's life; yet few treatment programs meet this goal. For many men and women in recovery, sexual behavior linked with drug or alcohol use is the primary reason for relapse. A large number of addicts have sex/drug-linked patterns of combining drugs, such as crystal meth, cocaine, alcohol, and club drugs, with sexual relations. In recovery, they may be unprepared for the dual absence of drug use and sexual relations. Additionally many addicts have past histories of sexual abuse. While great strides have been made in treating women and men suffering from addiction, their sexuality is too often marginalized. When sexuality is not directly and positively addressed in drug and alcohol treatment, it can contribute to treatment failure, relapse, and untold costs in the lives of addicts and their families. Sexual Health in Drug and Alcohol Treatment introduces a pioneering evidence-based curriculum, designed to integrate concepts of sexual health, current sex research, and recent developments in relapse prevention research. Complete with suggested group activities, guided discussions, role plays, and more, the program can reduce the risk of relapse and increase client retention for men and women with sex/drug linked addiction and alcoholism. This curriculum was created by drug and alcohol counselors, sexual health advocates, and sychological/sexological research specialists. Key Features: Helps women and men in recovery identify sexual thoughts and feelings associated with increasing or decreasing risk of relapse Is compatible with all treatment settings, approaches, and clientele Includes pschoeducational material, experiential learning, skill-building exercises, assessments, worksheets, and more Proven to improve client retention and reduce sex/drug linked shame-a common cause of relapse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although sexuality is an integral part of close romantic relationships, research linking these two constructs has been less systematic than other areas pertaining to close relationships. To date, researchers in communication, sociology, family studies, psychology, and psychiatry, have made significant advances in both of these fields. The editors' goal is to integrate this research into one volume. They bring together major scholars from the diversity of fields working on close relationship topics to examine past contributions and new directions in sexuality. The emphasis is on theoretical integration and stimulation, methodological rigor, and critical analysis. This volume explores: *early sexual experiences and their impact on late life sexuality; *how life's stresses impact sexuality and satisfaction with closeness; *the affect of postpartum depression on sexuality; and *the relationship between control, power, anger, as well as revenge and sexual processes in couples. The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships is intended for students and researchers in the disciplines of social, clinical, developmental, and health psychology; family studies; counseling; and interpersonal, family, and health communication. An excellent reference in advanced courses in close relationships taught in psychology, communications, sociology, anthropology, and family studies, the material in Part V will also appeal to clinical psychologists, health professionals, and policymakers.
