Download or read book Hand-Book of the Terrestrial Globe written by Ellen E. Fitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of the Terrestrial Globe: Or, Guide to Fitz's New Method of Mounting and Operating Globes; Designed for the Use of Families, Schools, and Academies The following pages are designed solely as an accompaniment to Fitz's Globe. They therefore contain only the text which is thought to bear expressly upon the use of this globe. A brief Appendix, comprising an historical account of globes, with a few details respecting their construction, forms the single exception. I am happy to render acknowledgments to Prof. G. A. Hill of Harvard College, from whom I have received valuable aid in the preparation of the book. As regards the practical teaching of the subject, it is suggested that it would be well to have the learner first study thoroughly the first 71 articles of Part I.; then take the Description of the Globe (in connection, of course, with the Globe itself); and then proceed to the Problems, going back to the remaining articles of Part I. when he comes to the Problems which refer to the subjects explained in those articles. It is intended in a future edition to enlarge this manual, giving it more the form of an Astronomy, and having a portion of it adapted to the use of a celestial globe. Book Synopsis Patents and Cartographic Inventions by : Mark Monmonier
Download or read book Patents and Cartographic Inventions written by Mark Monmonier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the US patent system, which helped practical minded innovators establish intellectual property rights and fulfill the need for achievement that motivates inventors and scholars alike. In this sense, the patent system was a parallel literature: a vetting institution similar to the conventional academic-scientific-technical journal insofar as the patent examiner was both editor and peer reviewer, while the patent attorney was a co-author or ghost writer. In probing evolving notions of novelty, non-obviousness, and cumulative innovation, Mark Monmonier examines rural address guides, folding schemes, world map projections, diverse improvements of the terrestrial globe, mechanical route-following machines that anticipated the GPS navigator, and the early electrical you-are-here mall map, which opened the way for digital cartography and provided fodder for patent trolls, who treat the patent largely as a license to litigate.

Book Synopsis Women and Dictionary-Making by : Lindsay Rose Russell
Download or read book Women and Dictionary-Making written by Lindsay Rose Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dictionaries are a powerful genre, perceived as authoritative and objective records of the language, impervious to personal bias. But who makes dictionaries shapes both how they are constructed and how they are used. Tracing the craft of dictionary making from the fifteenth century to the present day, this book explores the vital but little-known significance of women and gender in the creation of English language dictionaries. Women worked as dictionary patrons, collaborators, readers, compilers, and critics, while gender ideologies served, at turns, to prevent, secure, and veil women's involvements and innovations in dictionary making. Combining historical, rhetorical, and feminist methods, this is a monumental recovery of six centuries of women's participation in dictionary making and a robust investigation of how the social life of the genre is influenced by the social expectations of gender.
