Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the peak of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, German-American Joseph A. Hemann provided details for his biographical sketch published in 1876. From this we learn of his early life as a student, his Atlantic crossing to Baltimore, his journey across the Alleghenies, his first teaching job, meeting his life-long mate, becoming a newspaper publisher and finally a banker. He was socially active in the Queen City of the West for almost forty years until a devastating sequence of events drove him out of town. This publication provides both genealogical facts and an expanded biography of Hemann’s life as a German immigrant and successful business man in Cincinnati before, during, and after the Civil War. In Section Four, the 19th century German language newspapers of Cincinnati are summarized including graphical images of the mastheads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
Book Synopsis Agnes Lake Hickok by : Carolyn M. Bowers
Download or read book Agnes Lake Hickok written by Carolyn M. Bowers and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first woman in America to own and operate a circus, Agnes Lake spent thirty years under the Big Top before becoming the wife of Wild Bill Hickok—a mere five months before he was killed. Although books abound on the famous lawman, Agnes’s life has remained obscured by circus myth and legend. Linda A. Fisher and Carrie Bowers have written the first biography of this colorful but little-known circus performer. Agnes originally found fame as a slack-wire walker and horseback rider, and later as an animal trainer. Her circus career spanned more than four decades. Following the murder of her first husband, Bill Lake, she was the sole manager of the “Hippo-Olympiad and Mammoth Circus.” While taking her show to Abilene, she met town marshal Hickok and five years later she married him. After Hickok’s death, Agnes traveled with P. T. Barnum and Buffalo Bill Cody, and managed her daughter Emma Lake’s successful equestrian career. This account of a remarkable life cuts through fictions about Agnes’s life, including her own embellishments, to uncover her true story. Numerous illustrations, including rare photographs and circus memorabilia, bring Agnes’s world to life.
Book Synopsis Hamilton County, Ohio by : Jeffrey G. Herbert
Download or read book Hamilton County, Ohio written by Jeffrey G. Herbert and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new index has been compiled from the death and burial records of twenty-four churches in Hamilton County, Ohio. It contains nearly 11,000 deaths recorded in the death and burial registers of individual priests and ministers before 1850. Although index entries vary considerably in detail from church to church and year to year, a particular entry may contain any of the following valuable information: full name and maiden name (where applicable) of the deceased, names of parents, surviving spouse, date of death, age at time of death and date of burial. Entries are alphabetized by surname and are coded with a letter or letters corresponding to a key of churches, allowing researchers to consult the original records for clarification; an "*" preceding the church code denotes an original record containing birth information for the deceased. An alphabetical listing of maiden names and corresponding married names follows the index. Hamilton County, Ohio, Church Death Records, 1811-1849 is intended to supplement the cemetery extractions published in the Hamilton County Burial Records series (also published by Heritage Books, Inc.). Although these church registers do not provide a complete record of Hamilton County deaths and burials for this time period, they can be used to fill in gaps in the official record and suggest new avenues for genealogical research. This volume is particularly valuable for family researchers whose ancestors may have passed through Hamilton County during the western migration but were not residents. The deaths of transient pioneer families are often unaccounted for in county court and cemetery records and were seldom noted in the obituaries of Cincinnati's newspapers; in some cases church registers are the only record of the deaths of these individuals.
Download or read book Our Gohman Story written by Roy Evans and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some fifty years apart, two itinerant men wander into two adjacent German towns. Two of their descendants, a man and a woman, eventually meet and, after traveling nearly a fourth of the way around the world to a new land, are married. In story form, this book covers the German roots of the couple, reasons for leaving their homeland, ending up in the Minnesota Territory, and the effort of becoming successful homesteaders. Following the in-depth exploration of the lives of the first generation couple, individual stories about the second generation of the family are presented. Generally engaged as farmers, the two generations of Gohmans had very diverse personalities but adapted to the world around them uniformly with strength and character. The family members experienced and adapted to great changes in their livesmoving from a German Heuerling environment to working in early Cincinnati industries and finally moving on to homesteading in the wilderness of the Minnesota Territory.
