Book excerpt: "The Pozzi Gospels, completed by Hakob Jughayets'i, includes an extraordinary series of portraits, narrative miniatures and marginal figures. Copied and illuminated under the protection of a church in the city of Keghi (modern Kigi, fifty miles south-west of Erzurum), Hakob's sparkling, vibrant palette, expressive wide-eyed figures, and iconographic inventiveness are at their most distinctive in this early work." "This is the first monograph to trace Hakob's development from his beginnings in Armenia in the 1580s to his later works in Safavid Persia, at Isfahan, in 1607 and 1610. The study constructs Hakob's biography, explores his artistic development, and evaluates his career within the context of late 16th-century Armenian politics, culture and devotion. Illustrated with reproductions of miniatures produced at every stage of his career, it reveals the singular artistic vision of Hakob himself and the dynamism of contemporary Armenian illumination."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of oral tradition is well known, for without some theory of this medium no history of Jesus would be possible. This study examines Mark 4.1-34 in the light of three distinctive models of orality: Rudolf Bultmann's form-critical method, B. Gerhardsson's 'Memory and Manuscript' theory and the recent contribution of W. Kelber. The form-critically separate units in the test (allegory, parables and aphorisms) are examined on the basis of their attestation in various documents (Mark, Q, Thomas) to determine whether independent versions of these sayings can be identified and what they tell us about the oral phase and Jesus. This analysis suggests that the criteria for authenticity of 'distinctiveness' and 'multiple attestation' need to be re-examined in light of the folkloric understanding of orality.

Book excerpt: THE GOSPEL OF YAH’SHUA {THE ONLY NAME GIVEN UNDER HEAVEN BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED} AND THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES {The Nazarean Version} ָיה יה ָis Hebrew for God our Savior’s Name, YAH. For YAH is the name above every name (Isaiah 12:2 NKJV). The name above every name was given to the Son of God, YAH’SHUA (Philippians 2:9). The Gospel of YAH’SHUA and the Acts of the Apostles is the story of the four Gospels of the Savior’s life, as witnessed by the Gospel writers and from their other witnesses. Their witness is combined in this book to enhance all that the Savior did and said as one continuous story. He taught twelve disciples to carry on the work of bringing the Good News (the Gospel) to a wretched world full of sin and woe, and contrary to what some may say, the world is a better place due to the teachings of the Savior, as our only hope is in Him. The Acts of the Apostles is the story of their efforts, and it is here combined with the four Gospel writers’ testimony to create an ongoing storyline, and what a story it is! You will be amazed at the life the Savior given in greater detail by the four Gospels weaved together, which truly enhances the life and events of the Savior of the world, our Messiah. It can honestly be said that this book contains the fullness of the Gospel and may answer questions one has been pondering for a long time. Everything within this book is pure Gospel, as they say, with no additives from other sources, only the Bible. Here presented is the revealed name of the Savior, as there is only one name revealed, YAH’SHUA: Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) Halleluyah. Praise YAH, praise YAH’SHUA!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though immediately recognizable in public discourse as a modern state in a political "hot zone," Armenia has a material history and visual culture that reaches back to the Paleolithic era. This book presents a timely and much-needed survey of the arts of Armenia from antiquity to the early eighteenth century C.E. Divided chronologically, it brings into discussion a wide range of media, including architecture, stone sculpture, works in metal, wood, and cloth, manuscript illumination, and ceramic arts. Critically, The Art of Armenia presents this material within historical and archaeological contexts, incorporating the results of specialist literature in various languages. It also positions Armenian art within a range of broader comparative contexts including, but not limited to, the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, Byzantium, the Islamic world, Yuan-dynasty China, and seventeenth-century Europe. The Art of Armenia offers students, scholars, and heritage readers of the Armenian community something long desired but never before available: a complete and authoritative introduction to three thousand years of Armenian art, archaeology, architecture, and design.

Book excerpt: The Cotton Patch Gospel, by Koinonia Farm founder Clarence Jordan, recasts the stories of Jesus and the letters of Paul and Peter into the language and culture of the mid-20th century South. Born out of the Civil Rights struggle, these now classic translations of much of the New Testament bring the far-away places of Scripture closer to home: Gainesville, Selma, Birmingham, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. As Jordan once wrote, "While there have been many excellent translations of the Scriptures into modern English, they still have left us stranded in some faraway land in the long-distant past. We need to have the good news come to us not only in our own tongue but in our own time. We want to be participants in the faith, not merely -spectators." More than a translation, The Cotton Patch Gospel continues to make clear the startling relevance of Scripture for today. These editions come complete with new Forewords and a new Introduction by Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller. Smyth & Helwys Publishing is proud to help reintroduce these seminal works of Clarence Jordan to a new generation of believers.

Book excerpt: At the foot of Mount Ararat on the crossroads of the eastern and western worlds, medieval Armenians dominated international trading routes that reached from Europe to China and India to Russia. As the first people to convert officially to Christianity, they commissioned and produced some of the most extraordinary religious objects of the Middle Ages. These objects—from sumptuous illuminated manuscripts to handsome carvings, liturgical furnishings, gilded reliquaries, exquisite textiles, and printed books—show the strong persistence of their own cultural identity, as well as the multicultural influences of Armenia’s interactions with Romans, Byzantines, Persians, Muslims, Mongols, Ottomans, and Europeans. This unprecedented volume, written by a team of international scholars and members of the Armenian religious community, contextualizes and celebrates the compelling works of art that define Armenian medieval culture. It features breathtaking photographs of archaeological sites and stunning churches and monasteries that help fill out this unique history. With groundbreaking essays and exquisite illustrations, Armenia illuminates the singular achievements of a great medieval civilization. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As all readers soon discover, the four Gospels were written with mixed chronology and with much repetition. The solution to this idiosyncrasy has been to create a synoptic version, of which the present volume is an excellent example. The compiler has rearranged the unrepeated Gospel story in time sequence, while retaining all the Words of Christ, in service to the reader. Respecting the original version, the original sources are annotated for the user's easy reference.
