Book excerpt: Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene c. carolina) have experienced range-wide declines as the result of extensive habitat loss, fragmentation, and alteration. The Oak Openings Region of northwestern Ohio is a biodiversity hotspot that exists in a highly fragmented landscape and provides a unique case study from which to examine the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on Eastern Box Turtles. In an effort to inform management and conservation efforts in the Oak Openings Region, I initiated a radio-telemetry project with the following objectives: 1) examine the spatial ecology of Eastern Box Turtles over several years to understand how they interact with their habitat in an area as unique as the Oak Openings Region, 2) develop predictive models depicting the temporal distributions of Eastern Box Turtles, 3) examine the impacts of one of the most common management tools in the Oak Openings Region, prescribed fire, on Eastern Box Turtles, and 4) evaluate pattern-recognition software as a low-cost alternative of identifying individual Eastern Box Turtles. Turtles at my study site exhibited larger home ranges than previously reported for this species as well as hierarchical habitat selection at multiple scales. Predicted distributions followed phenological shifts in habitat use and were influenced primarily by habitat type and canopy cover. Prescribed fires have the potential to have a devastating effect on box turtle populations, but management activities that take box turtle ecology into account will minimize these impacts while maintaining a critical disturbance regime. Computer-assisted photo-recognition has a great deal of potential as a supplemental method of identifying box turtles and provides a low-cost means of incorporating citizen science data into mark-recapture studies. My work suggests that conservation for Eastern Box Turtles in the Oak Openings Region should focus on maintenance and restoration of remaining box turtle habitat, connectivity between critical habitat patches, and altering burn regimes to minimize negative effects on box turtles while still meeting ecosystem-level management objectives.

Book excerpt: "A population of box turtles is known to exist in a small (57 ha) woodlot in eastern Tennessee known as the Maryville College Woods, Maryville College Campus, Maryville, Tennessee. Searches for turtles were conducted by foot from May 2016 to August 2017, as well as the use of turtle sniffing dogs. All turtles were measured and marked to obtain morphometric data. Turtles spaced across the woods were tagged with radio transmitters and tracked to gather information about home range and activity. A total of 109 turtles were marked and used in this study, providing a gender ratio of 67M:36F. Juveniles made up 14% of the study population, suggesting a healthy, reproductively active population. There were two observed mating events, but no nesting events observed during the study. Average morphometric data resulted in an average plastron width 66.65 mm (SD=13.12 mm), average plastron length 108.86 (SD=16.13 mm), average carapace width 86.87 (SD= 17.72 mm), average carapace length 118.08 (SD=24.02 mm), average shell height 52.69 mm (SD=52.69 mm), average circumference 24.60 cm (SD=4.58 cm), and average mass 341.40 g 2 (SD=129.16 g) (table 2). Males had significantly larger carapace widths (p=0.0002), carapace length (p=0.003), plastron width (p=0.0006), plastron length (p=0.00002), circumference (p=0.0006), shell height (p=0.05), and mass (p=0.0005) than females. A Lincoln-Peterson mark-recapture analysis estimated that the abundance of the box turtle population in the Maryville College woods is 588 turtles; 10 turtles per hectare. Average home range size was 0.74 hectares, with no significant difference (p=0.87) in home range size of males and females. These results, which suggest a thriving, healthy, and reproductively active population, indicate a need for conservation and future study. Future research should focus on ecology of the Maryville College Woods, Maryville, Tennessee to determine what it is that has kept this population here or cause them to come here. This knowledge would provide necessary information for their ongoing conservation." -- from abstract

Nonnative plants typically form dense, often monotypic, thickets that affect the ability of animals to find food, reproduce, avoid predation risk, and thermoregulate. By doing so, nonnative plants have potential to displace resident animals from areas otherwise suitable as animals habitat. However, limited studies have investigated whether resident animals avoid areas dominated by nonnative plants. This study investigates impacts of nonnative plants on eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina), a species that has been declining throughout their range. To determine if eastern box turtles avoid nonnative plants, I estimated habitat selection based on GPS fixes recorded for 16 individuals (6 males and 10 females) in an urban forest. Specifically, I determined if nonnative plants are avoided when turtles establish their home range (i.e., second order selection) and when they use their home ranges (i.e., third order selection). For females, the density of four the six most common nonnative plant species was lower in turtle locations than available locations across the study area (i.e., second order selection) and those within home ranges (i.e., third selection). For males, the density of only one nonnative plant species was lower in turtle locations than available locations across the study area (i.e., second order selection), and none of the species were different between turtle locations and available locations with their home ranges (i.e., third order selection). These results suggests that eastern box turtles avoid some (but not all) species of nonnative plants and that females are more sensitive to nonnative plants that males. The displacement of animals from highly invaded areas represents a functional loss of habitat. The reduction in available habitat area may lead to reduction in carrying capacity of invaded areas, and therefore, may have long-term impacts on population persistence. -- Abstract, leaf ii
