Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1999, David Ludden's book offers a comprehensive historical framework for understanding the regional diversity of agrarian South Asia. Adopting a long-term view of history, it treats South Asia not as a single civilization territory, but rather as a patchwork of agrarian regions, each with their own social, cultural and political histories. The discussion begins during the first millennium, when farming communities displaced pastoral and tribal groups, and goes on to consider the development of territoriality from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Subsequent chapters consider the emergence of agrarian capitalism in village societies under the British, and demonstrate how economic development in contemporary South Asia continues to reflect the influence of agrarian localism. As a comparative synthesis of the literature on agrarian regimes in South Asia, the book promises to be a valuable resource for students of agrarian and regional history as well as of comparative world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'development has generated considerable academic interest and unending debate among scholars from several disciplines. At a time whe the intellectual climate is marked by a lack of consensus on the term, this book sets forht a modified model of development at the micro-level- amodel in which culture is placed on the highest pedastal and evaluation provides the key to success. The book is the result of an indepth fieldwork carried out by the author among the Konds of Phullbani district of Orissa. The 'target oriented' approach of the government agencies has made them over inclined towards statistics in the formulation and implementation of development programmes neglecting the socio-cultural factors. This has resulted in a myopic development; the government's offer, in terms of development; the government's offer, in terms of developmental assistance, has either been rejected or at best evoked lukewarm response. The author proposes that the planners must use a cultural lens to devise development programmes, other wise development woult continue to be myopic.

Book excerpt: Development of tribes and their areas are today a major concern of the Government. Various articles of the Indian Constitution provide specific provisions for the advancement of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Often, a tribeis biologically as well as culturally distinct from other tribes and non-tribal population. The bureaucratic system has its own limitations and is not flexible enough. A Voluntary Organisation on the other hand, cna easily adjust itself to the needs of the people with sympathy, personal care and urgency. Despite efforts, both by the Government and Voluntary Organisations, the progress is not what it should have been possible because of the inconsistency between various developmental approaches and different socio-economic-politico-cultural factors in which the tribal groups are nursed and nurtured.

Book excerpt: Recenty there have ben attemtps globally, regionally and nationally to create forums at the U.N. level and other trade rellated levels by NGOs, commercial groups as well as community based groups for defining the rights of farmers. innovators, tribal inventors for protection of traditional knowledge and resource base as well as creating a social and legal infrastructure to patent or reward the inventing communities for the innovations through a profit sharing mechanism. These controversies brought about several important issues regarding patenting and protecting intellectual property rights of disadvantaged communities, farmers, tribals as well as protecting the traditional resource and knowledge base of each country. India accords constitutional protectio and affirmative action to its scheduled castes and tribes, yet, willingly or unwillingly, state actions deprive the STs of their basic economic resources, i.e.forest, land and water Clandestine encroachment is being made in tribal areas by commercial interests linked to a world-wide net-work of the flora and Fauna.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Constitution of India provides for equality of status to all the citizens, it also recognises the neen for special provisions in favour of the socially disadvantaged groups with the objective of bringing them to a level comparable to the other communities. Based on the thesis of the author's doctoral research, the present volume examines the impact of the policy of compensatory discrimination and the various constitutional provisions aimed at giving preferential treatment to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes especially with regard to the provision of resevation of jobs in the public services. The author analyses the degree of social transformation achieved dure to the implementation of the policy of reservation in the public services among the SC's and ST's with particular reference to the State of Bihar. Many significant findings have emerged out of the study. The beneficiaries of reservation have not only broken away from their traditional occupations but have also become examples for members of their communities in view of their power, prestigve and self-confidence vis-ý-vis members of the upper castes. Induction in to the government services has given a fillip to these communities to contribute actively in the development process. The volume also examines the implementation of the policy of reservation and the change that has occurred in the semi-feudal society of Bihar. The book contains valuable suggestions towards ensuring effective administration of the reservation policy. These deserve the attention of policy-makers, academicians and administrators engaged in the task of bringing about social change through constitutional means.

Book excerpt: The book is a serious attempt to compile the facts gathered mainly from the Meitei vocabularly and traditional script relating to the historical events occuring from time to time in Manipur in the pre and post-British times. Manipuris have had a history dating back to thier ancestor NINGTHOU KAANGBA who ruled during 15th century B.C. In his successors were Maharajs, Maharanis, Princes and princesses who ascended the throne of Manipur. There were also gaps sometimes when the throne remained vacant and thelaw ando rder situation went out of hand. There were occasional invasiosn from Burma. The close relationship between Chine and Manipur has been shown to be established by way fo cultural similarities and exchange viz. sericulture etc. Various myths and theories have been discussed to find out the origin of the ancestors of the Meiteis. Monogoloid origin of the Manipuris has been emphasised.

The pace of economic growth is largely influenced by the efficiency of transportation system as most economic activities are possible only if transport is available to make them so. In agriculture, transportation ebing an integral part of the production and marketing chain is an indispensable input in the pre-harvest and post-harvest operations. The complex functions of this chain start from carrying various inputs like seeds, farm equipments, labourers, fertilizers, pesticides etc., from the sources of supply to farm yeards, assembling the final produce at the central locations of the farm or at the other appropriate nearer places for its further processing, moving the goods to local market or local store within the same village or to the wholesale agricultural assembling market or local store within the same village or the wholesale agricultural assembling market located at another village/town and from there to the godowns and finally to the ultimate consumption places.
