Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for the Study of Insects The Manual for the Study of Insects, published in 189 5, was written to meet the needs of teachers of Entomology when that science was in its infancy as an academic study. It was well received and accomplished its purpose, and there has been a continuous call for it since; it is now in its eighteenth edition. Owing to the rapid development Of the science it became necessary to revise the book and I began this before my retire ment in 1914. However, so great has been the growth of Entomology that this intended revision Of the Manual resulted in a new textbook, An Introduction to Entomology. P. 346, the name of the common clothes-moth should be changed from Tinea flavifrontella Linn, to Tinea pelliolella Linn. P. 466, Fig. 433 represents the larva of C nia dimidiata Fabr., according to Mr. O. Lugger, who has raised it. P. 611, Fig. 598 does not represent the eggs of Corydalis cornutus, which have been correctly identified and figured by Dr. Riley. P. 635. for Pedipalpi substitute for the name of the order the word Arthrogastra, of which the Pedipalpi are a sub-order. P. 680, Spirostrephon copei should read Scoterpes copei. In the author's text-books on Zoology, and also in his "Entomology for Beginners," he has adopted a new classification of insects, dividing them into sixteen orders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of Insects, and a Treatise on Those Injurious and Beneficial to Crops: For the Use of Colleges, Farm-Schools, and Agriculturists The typical Crustacean cannot be said to have a true head, in distinction from a thorax bearing the organs of locomotion, but rather a group of rings, to which are appended the organs of sensation and locomotion. Hence we find the appendages of this region gradually changing from antennae and jaws to foot-jaws, or limbs capable of eating and also of locomotion; they shade into each other as seen in Fig. 9. Sometimes the jaws become remarkably like claws or the legs resemble jaws at the base, but towards their tips become claw-like; gill-like bodies are sometimes attached to the foot-jaws, and thus, as stated by Professor J. D. Dana in the introduction to his great work on the Crustacea of the United States Exploring Expedi tion, the typical Crustaceans do not have a distinct head, but rather a head-thorax (cephalothorax). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Exhibited Series of Insects The First Edition of this Guide, written by Mr. Chas. O. Waterhouse, being out of print, the author has revised it, with the help of his colleagues in the Insect Section, so as to bring the Second Edition as far as possible into line with the exhibited series of specimens. This has involved a considerable amount of extension; but the Guide must be regarded as provisional, since alterations are still in progress in the Gallery, the arrangement of which is far from complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits IN the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Bay Lankester, Professor E. B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Among the Insects IF my young friends will peruse this book with half the pleasure I enjoyed whilst gathering the facts which it relates, I Shall be abundantly repaid for the labor expended in writing it. The air and fields are so full of beautiful and sprightly things of life that I shall not fail to confer a favor upon intelligent and inquisitive boys and girls if I succeed in inspiring them with an interest in the study of insect-life. The objects embraced in this study are within the reach of every one. They intrude themselves into our presence uncalled, and at times are most unwelcome. For this reason they are despised, and their structure, instincts and domestic habits are unstudied. But, like all the works of God, they display his wisdom and goodness, and are, on this account, worthy of the profoundest study.
